President Carlson announces retirement following 2018-19 academic year
Last week I announced my retirement for the end of the 2018-19 academic year. It has been my privilege to serve as Luther's 10th president. I am honored each day to work with students, faculty, staff, alumni and friends of the college who inspire me with their passion, dedication, creativity and commitment to use their talents to better our community and the world.
In the coming year, I am committed to work with energy and focus to launch successfully the strategic plan's key, first-year initiatives as the presidential search is conducted. The timing of a transition to a new president next year will assure a strong foundation and momentum in achieving the plan's long-term goals.
As president, I have been pleased and proud to work with the Luther community to launch innovative new programs, enhance long-time strengths of the college and build a strong foundation for the future. In the current challenging environment for higher education, we set forth and achieved significant goals in our Priorities 2016-2018 plan. Our new strategic plan, Inspired. Empowered. Engaged., sets ambitious, transformative goals for the years ahead.
I am grateful for partnership with you these past four years. I look forward to working with you this coming year to assure a strong future for Luther College.
Soli Deo Gloria.
Paula J. Carlson, President
Visual Communications major, Musical Theatre minor approved

After unanimous approval from Luther's Board of Regents, Visual Communication has been added as a major and minor to the college's curriculum for the 2019-20 academic year. In addition, Musical Theatre, which has experienced a huge resurgence in popular culture, was unanimously approved as the college's newest minor, also beginning in the 2019-20 academic year.

June is National Safety Month
June is National Safety Month. The theme this year is "No One Gets Hurt." In the third week of the campaign, the focus is "falls." At Luther, slips, trips and falls account for the highest majority of workers' compensation claims and costs. In addition to the hazards caused by winter, the office environment can contribute to injuries. Keep the office clutter free and use a ladder to step up—not a chair. Maintain a clear line of vision to avoid collisions around corners and watch out for floors that are slippery when wet due to rain, snow or mopping.

'Who do we want Luther graduates to be' July 11
The "Who do we want Luther graduates to be" workshop is 9 a.m.-noon Wednesday, July 11, in Mott. This workshop allows faculty and staff to gather to dream about our vision for how we might help students become their best self. What must graduates of Luther know and be able to do? What is our biggest, most beautiful vision for the graduates we send out into the world? Our goal for this workshop is to avoid all planning, looking at curricula, or asking what others do. Instead, we aim for a discussion of ideal outcomes that can serve as a prologue to the work ahead. Contact Brad Chamberlain, 387-1627, or Andrea Beckendorf, 387-1227, with questions. Register here to secure a spot.

And finally...
Thursday, June 14, marked the opening of the 64-game World Cup soccer tournament, which culminates in the championship match Sunday, July 15. Brazil has won more World Cups than any other country, taking home five titles during their 20 appearances (this year marks their 21st). Germany has appeared in the finals eight times, taking home four wins. Argentina leads the way in yellow cards with 11 and also has been involved in the most penalty shoot-outs at five, winning four.
Need another reason to catch World Cup fever? Look no further than Mexico's 1-0 stunning win over Germany Sunday. At nearly the same time as Mexico's Hirving Lozano scored the decisive goal, at least two sensors in Mexico City detected an earthquake, believed to be caused by all the fans celebrating the goal.
