Reformation Commemoration Symposium

Luther will host a symposium honoring the 500th anniversary of the Reformation all day Tuesday, Oct. 31. Titled "The Reformation of Everything, 1517-2017," the event begins at 9 a.m. in the CFL with a plenary address by Professor Brad Gregory of Notre Dame. The remainder of the day consists of presentations and performances by members of the Luther community. Reformation Commemoration Concert

The Luther College Music Department is presenting the "Reformation Cantata," a work composed in honor of the Reformation Commemoration by four Luther College alumni and four current students, at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 31, in the CFL Main Hall. The program includes a new work for concert band, jointly commissioned by a consortium of Lutheran colleges. Ensembles involved include Concert Band, Collegiate Chorale and Cathedral Choir. All Saints Chapel Nov. 1

College Ministries invites everyone to the All Saints Chapel, 10:30-10:50 a.m. Wednesday, Nov. 1, in the CFL. The service includes time to light candles and remember new saints and those who have died.

Regina Mustafa to speak Nov. 1

Deepening the interfaith dialogue on Luther's campus, Regina Mustafa, an interfaith activist from Minnesota, will speak at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 1, in the CFL Recital Hall. Mustafa will describe her recent experience running for Congress and her work bridging the gap between religions, specifically addressing the challenges of Muslim women in interfaith activism.

Decorah Power Series

Erin Buchanan, Energy Services Coordinator at Cedar Falls Utilities, will present "The Power of Local Priorities: Energy Efficiency and Community Solar," at 7 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 2, in Valders 369. Buchanan will also present at a noon brown bag lunch at Decorah City Hall on Nov. 2. Both presentations are a part of the Decorah Power Fall Learning Series and are open to the public with no charge for admission.

'The Myth of Middle Class Stagnation'

It's been widely reported that ordinary Americans' living standards peaked in the mid-1970s and have since remained stagnant. While there is data to support this claim, some say the data is flawed. Challenging the existing data, Economist and Professor Don Boudreaux will share his findings at 7 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 2, in Valders 206. His lecture, "The Myth of Middle Class Stagnation," describes how American living standards have improved significantly over the last 40 years.

Discussion of 'The Rise and Decline of Faculty Governance'

The Dean's office and Luther American Association of University Professors are sponsoring a discussion of the history and principles of faculty governance, based on Larry G. Gerber's "The Rise and Decline of Faculty Governance." The discussion will span three meetings: Thursday, Nov. 2; Thursday, Nov. 9; and Thursday, Nov. 16, all 9:40-10:45 a.m. in Borlaug Room. Faculty are invited to sign up on the Dean's webpage, and pick up books from the Dean's office.

DM benefit concert Nov. 3

Luther College Dance Marathon will host a benefit concert at 7 p.m., Friday, Nov. 3, at The Lingonberry in downtown Decorah. The concert features Luther a capella groups, soloists, speakers and information about Dance Marathon's mission. Admission is $5, with free-will donations being accepted. Luther College Dance Marathon is a student-run organization that raises money to financially and emotionally support the families of patients at the University of Iowa Stead Family Children's Hospital.

SAC Entertainment presents Erik Berry

Luther College Alumnus Erik Berry, class of 1996, will return to campus to perform a mandolin concert at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Nov. 3, in Marty's. Graduating from Luther with a Bachelor of Arts in English, Berry is now a mandolin player based in northeastern Minnesota. He performs original, instrumental mandolin music, with inspirations of Celtic, bluegrass and old-time themes as well as experimental, electronic music and improvisation. He is a current member of the band Trampled by Turtles.

Adults and children of all ages are invited to a family music concert featuring chamber music performances and hands-on activities as Luther music students tell the story of "The Remarkable Farkle McBride" at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 4, in the Orchestra Room in Jenson-Noble Hall of Music. CSS presents Anat Cohen

Anat Cohen will perform music from her new album "Happy Song" with her 10-piece band at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 4, in the CFL as part of the Center Stage Series. Her albums have seen the clarinetist/saxophonist range from hard-swinging to lilting balladry, from small groups to larger ensembles and back again, exploring a universe of music along the way. Concert Band concert Nov. 5

The Luther College Concert Band will present its fall concert at 4 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 5, in the CFL Main Hall. The performance is open to the public with no charge for admission. Zen Den open house

The Zen Den, located in Health Services, has been expanded and refreshed. Stop by from 2-4 p.m. Monday, Nov. 6, to see the new space and enjoy some refreshments. The Zen Den is a space to relax and rejuvenate just in time for the holidays, CAL and busyness of finals. The Zen Den features a massage chair and meditation pillows and is available on a first come, first served basis for students Monday-Friday, 8 a.m.-noon and 1-4 p.m.

Jazz Band concert Nov. 7

The Luther College Jazz Band is performing a concert at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 7, in the CFL Main Hall. The concert is open to the public with no charge for admission. The concert program features various styles of music from swing to funk to mambo and will include works from Stan Kenton, Oliver Nelson, Thad Jones and Neal Hefti.

Ryan Sallans Nov. 8

Born into a female body, international transgender speaker, consultant, publisher and author Ryan Sallans will speak at Luther College, discussing his personal journey of transformation from childhood body struggles and development of an eating disorder during college to coming out as transgender and the difficulties he's faced financially, emotionally and mentally. Sallans will speak on Luther's campus at 6 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 8, in Valders Hall of Science Room 206. Following his presentation, he will sign copies of his book "Second Son: Transitioning Toward My Destiny, Love and Life." Copies of the book are available for purchase in the Luther College Book Shop or at the presentation. The event is sponsored by the Center for Ethics and Public Engagement and PRIDE.

Philharmonia concert Nov. 9

Luther College's Philharmonia Orchestra will perform a concert at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 9, in the CFL Main Hall. The concert is open to the public with no charge for admission. 'The Cat in the Hat' Nov. 9

With a performance teaching children about caring, fairness, responsibility and trustworthiness, Theatreworks USA presents "The Cat in the Hat" at 10 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 9, in the CFL Main Hall. The performance is recommended for children in kindergarten to fourth grade. Area schools have seating priority for school matinees; community members are welcome as space is available. Each show is approximately one hour in length.

Dorian keyboard guest recital Nov. 10

Luther alumni and professional pianists Jordan Buchholtz and Charles Hoeft will co-headline the Dorian keyboard guest recital at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Nov. 10, in the Noble Recital Hall. The concert is open to the public with no charge for admission.

St. Martin's Day Dinner

Luther is hosting a St. Martin's Day Dinner as a festive conclusion to the 2017 Reformation Commemoration from 5:30-7 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 11, in Peace Dining Room. Inspired by the historical menu associated with this medieval harvest festival, the dinner will be served family style, include a short program of period music and offer a cash bar. 'Rent' tickets on sale soon

"Rent" the musical will be performed in Jewel Theatre at 7:30 p.m. Nov. 10-11, 16-17; at 1:30 p.m. Nov. 18-19. Tickets are $15 and are available for purchase two weeks prior to opening online at tickets.luther.edu or at the Luther College Box Office. Remaining tickets will be sold at the door.
