Campus closing early Wednesday, Nov. 22
We are pleased to announce that offices can close early and staff are permitted to leave work at 3 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 22. Most non-exempt employees scheduled to work eight hours on Wednesday will work six hours and receive two hours of additional pay. Those employees who will have already worked their shift by 3 p.m. or those who must work their full shift because of the nature of their position will be given the option of taking two hours of paid time-off on a different day. If there are any questions, please contact your immediate supervisor or Human Resources.

November staff meeting

Nursing Department receives donation
The Department of Nursing was awarded $10,000 from the Max and Victoria Dreyfus Foundation to purchase intravenous pumps for the lab and simulation learning spaces. "We are honored and elated to provide greater accessibility to our students with equipment that reduces medication administration errors" said Jessica Raabe, who is serving as project director for the process.
Espinosa joins Board of Regents
President Carlson announced Wednesday that Luther alumnus Peter Espinosa will join Luther College's Board of Regents. Espinosa founded Pulpit Rock Brewing Company in Decorah, Iowa, in 2014, and remains its chairman. He also owns BottleTree Properties, which owns and operates a variety of commercial businesses. "I am honored and humbled to join the Luther College Board of Regents. Like many others [on the board], I have a long and extensive connection to Luther. I am from a family of Luther graduates and I married a Luther graduate (Kari Tollefson, Luther class of 1984). I have benefited greatly from the Liberal Arts education and Lutheran approach to learning that I received at Luther," said Espinosa.
Track airline mileage
Facilities would like to send a friendly reminder to please track airline mileage for use on the college's Carbon Footprint report. Luther has committed to keeping an inventory of its greenhouse gas emissions on an annual basis as part of the process to track its carbon footprint. This commitment requires gathering information related to all faculty, staff and student air travel miles paid for and/or reimbursed by the college, as well as college visitors flown to Luther on college expense. The Air Mileage Form can be found here.

Separating administrator rights from workstation login
Starting Wednesday, Nov. 15, faculty administrator rights will be separated from their workstation logins. Changes were made for staff workstations earlier this year. For more information see Administrator Rights on Faculty Workstations.
Think of the Luther Bakery this holiday season
Let the Luther Bakery make your pies, cakes, cheesecakes and rolls for Thanksgiving. New items this year include an orange cranberry bundt cake, a pumpkin roulade with brandied ginger mascarpone as well as a variety of bagels and cream cheese. Winter bike storage
Winter bike storage is 3-6 p.m. Thursday and Friday, Nov. 16-17. Bring bikes to Ashmore-Jewell Barn (Red Barn in Baker Village) to have them placed in secure, dry storage for the winter. Bike storage is free for all Luther students, staff and faculty. Bikes must be registered at the Welcome Desk in the Union prior to being stored. Bikes will not be accepted unless they are registered.
United Way update
Congratulations to Bridget Christopher and Kathy Stokker. Their names were selected as last week's drawing winners. Bridget won a can cooler from the Book Shop, and Kathy won a fabric shopping bag from the Alumni Office. There's still time to donate to the United Way and be eligible for the drawing. Mark your calendars for 'Christmas at Luther'
In celebration of the holiday season, the faith of the community and the continued celebration of the 500th anniversary of the Reformation, Luther College will present the 2017 production of "Christmas at Luther" Nov. 30-Dec. 3 in the CFL. The five "Christmas at Luther" performances are at 5:45 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 30; 6:30 p.m. and 9:15 p.m. Friday, Dec. 1; 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 2; and 2:30 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 3. At press time, two of the five performances are sold out, and very few tickets remain for the other three performances. Tickets may be purchased at tickets.luther.edu, telephone 387-1357 or email <boxoffice>.

Growing up, McKenna Campbell-Porter '16, was sure she would not attend Luther, her parents' alma mater. But one visit to campus changed her mind. "I was drawn to the dedicated professors, the diversity of courses offered, the active community and the beautiful landscape," she says. Christmas at Luther visit day
Luther is hosting a Christmas at Luther Visit Event Thursday, Nov. 30, for high school seniors interested in participating in music at Luther. The admissions event culminates in the evening's "Christmas at Luther" performance. Held in the CFL, the musical celebration features Luther's six choirs, Luther Ringers and the Symphony Orchestra. Registration for the visit day event is Sunday, Nov. 26.

The current Union Gallery Exhibition, "From Parlor to Countryside: Recent Fine Arts Collection Print Acquisitions," will be uninstalled Wednesday, Nov. 15, in preparation for a pop-up gallery show from ART 490, Senior Projects in Process.

Last weekend for 'Rent'
The VPA department presents "Rent," a 90s rock musical loosely based on Giacomo Puccini's opera "La Boheme," Nov. 16-19 in Jewel Theatre. Performances are at 7:30 p.m. Nov. 16-17, and at 1:30 p.m. Nov. 18-19. Tickets are free with Luther ID or $15 without. Following struggling artists living in the shadow of the AIDS epidemic, the show's stories of love and loss intertwine to promote living life to its fullest.
International Education Week

'The White Helmets'
Known as the White Helmets, a group of volunteers have spent years risking their lives to help aid the victims of the Syrian civil war. The 2016 Netflix documentary "The White Helmets" will be shown at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 14, in Valders 206. A discussion panel featuring Todd Green, Pedro dos Santos, Massi Faqiri '20, and Lauren Knuckey '18, will follow.

Varsity Band and Wind and Percussion Ensemble
The Varsity Band and Wind and Percussion Ensemble will perform their fall repertoire at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 14, in the CFL Main Hall. Varsity Band will play "A Festival Prelude" by Alfred Reed, John Carnahan's "A Dream of Coming Home" and "Hosts of Freedom" by Karl King. In Wind and Percussion Ensemble's portion of the concert, deAlbuquerque will conduct the ensemble in standards of wind ensemble literature including, "Let the Amen Sound" by Travis Cross, "The Seal Lullaby" by Eric Whitacre, Divertimento, Op. 42 by Vincent Persichetti and "El Abanico" by Alfredo Javaloyes Lόpez.
'Representing the Other' in Disney
Join the Center for Ethics and Public Engagement in a discussion of how indigenous peoples are represented in modern American culture at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 15, in the CRH. Jordan Boge '17, will present research findings from his summer project, "Representing the Other: Disney and the appropriation of indigenous peoples in Moana and Beyond." Anne-Marine Feat and Peter Nekola will comment on Boge's presentation and lead a broader discussion of this issue.
'Waking the Sleeping Giant' screening Nov. 15
The Center for Sustainable Communities is hosting the documentary screening of "Waking the Sleeping Giant: The Making of a Political Revolution" at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 15, in Valders 206. The 2017 documentary explores the burgeoning progressive movement by following the struggles of five individuals around the time of the 2016 U.S. presidential election.
NAA lunch Nov. 16
Luther College's Norse Athletic Association invites the community to the Luther College NAA Winter Sports Luncheon at noon Thursday, Nov. 16. Center Stage Series presents Thomanerchor Leipzig
Thomanerchor Leipzig, the St. Thomas Boys' Choir will take the stage for the Center Stage Series at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 18, in the CFL Main Hall. The memorial service will be held at Good Shepherd at 11 a.m. Monday, Nov. 20; a luncheon will follow in the Fellowship Hall. Norma Hervey presented a round table on Ta-Nehsi Coates' book, "Between the World and Me," Nov. 9 for the faculty and graduate students of Charles University's American studies department.
Dan Davis presented a lecture at the University of Vermont titled "Ancient Shipwrecks in the Deep Black Sea: A New Frontier in Marine Archaeology" Oct. 26. The talk told the story of working with Robert Ballard and discovering ancient shipwrecks in the Black Sea, 2006-12.
Andi Beckendorf served on the local arrangements committee for the Music Library Association's Midwest Chapter Meeting in Iowa City in October. In addition, she was part of the panel session "Immigrants, Educators and Unusual Finds: A Musical Travelogue of Iowa," where she highlighted Preus library's 16th-20th century Danish and Norwegian psalm books; the Weston Noble Collection in the Luther College Archives; music materials in the Vesterheim library and archives; and the Vesterheim Hardanger fiddle collection.
Andi Beckendorf and Victoria Peters '15, presented the poster "Enhancing Music Stacks Browsing with Call Number Posters: An Internship Experience" at the Music Library Association's Midwest Chapter Meeting in Iowa City Oct. 13. The posters represent one of the projects Peters completed during her spring 2015 music librarianship internship at Preus Library.
Megan Gmitro '20, spent her summer among Roman and Greek pottery in Corinth, Greece, as part of an internship with the Isthmian Archaeological Museum. From the Roman port of Kenchreai to the Cummer Tomb, Gmitro processed many artifacts from this area to be catalogued for the museum.
Sthela Gun Holly Hanitrinirina '19, was the Research and Evaluation intern for the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America's Global Mission unit in Chicago. She facilitated conversations on gender justice within the Global Mission unit, which will contribute to the 2019 ELCA Churchwide Assembly.
Sierra Twesten '18, presented a paper she developed in her Paideia 111 course, titled "Defining Our Consumption: The Intersection between Sexism and Speciesism" at the 28th Annual Philosophy and Religion Conference at Truman State University in Kirksville, Missouri, Nov. 12.
