Strategic planning forums Nov. 30 and Dec. 1
The Strategic Planning Committee and Action Plan Task Force invite and encourage all faculty, staff and students to participate in strategic planning forums 9:40 a.m. Thursday, Nov. 30, in the CFL Recital Hall and 3 p.m. Friday, Dec. 1, in Olin 102. The purpose of these forums is to discuss Draft Three of the strategic plan. You may find a copy of the draft posted here on the strategic planning website (login required). Faculty/staff Christmas party Dec. 8
President Carlson and Dr. Thomas Schattauer invite all faculty and staff to the Faculty and Staff Christmas Party, held 11:30 a.m.-2 p.m. Friday, Dec. 8, in Peace Dining Room. Come share good cheer and luncheon fare with Luther friends and colleagues. Seating will be available throughout the second floor of Dahl Centennial Union. Please RSVP by Dec. 6.

'Christmas at Luther' parking restrictions
In order to accommodate the large number of visitors anticipated for "Christmas at Luther," the following parking restrictions are in effect from 8 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 29, to 4 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 3, when normal lot regulations go back into effect:
The general parking areas of the library, Jenson-Noble and city pool lots will be reserved for visitors. Students should move their vehicles from these lots to either the Regents Center or Farwell lots. Faculty and staff may park in the library and Sampson Hoffland lots provided they move by 5:30 p.m. Thursday-Saturday and 10 a.m. Sunday unless attending the performance.
Exception: Vehicles displaying a commuter, Baker or college apartment sticker may park in the gravel city pool lot provided they vacate the spaces before 4 p.m. Thursday-Saturday and 10 a.m. Sunday.
The faculty/staff parking area by Valders will be reserved for handicapped parking. Alternative parking includes the roadway from Sampson Hoffland to the main gate, Regents Center and Farwell lots.
Starting at 5 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 30, through Sunday, Dec. 3, the lots on the east and west side of the CFL will also be designated for handicapped parking only.
Cooperation with these changes is appreciated. Vehicles found to be in violation of these special event restrictions are subject to fines.
Staff meeting Christmas party
The December staff meeting will be a Christmas party held at 9 a.m. Wednesday, Dec. 6, in Peace Dining Room. Donations will again be accepted and appreciated for the Decorah Community Food Pantry. Monetary donations are encouraged as cash gifts allow the Pantry to purchase in bulk. They will gladly accept non-perishable items, as well.
KATIE version update on Jan. 3
There will be a small upgrade to KATIE Wednesday, Jan. 3. All work will carry over. KATIE will be unavailable noon-5 p.m. that day. This upgrade will reintroduce the popular document converter that allows instructors to view and annotate assignments within KATIE. New from Multimedia
Using a new classroom? 360° classroom views are now available along with classroom technology cheatsheets and videos. In addition, Multimedia has switched from Final Cut Pro to Adobe Premiere Pro in the Digital Media Center Lab. Christmas Cheer program
Reminder, the college has guidelines for participating in the Christmas Cheer program. College funds cannot be used to purchase Christmas Cheer gifts nor can purchases be charged at local vendors and paid through Luther's accounts payable system. CEPE January book groups
The Center for Ethics and Public Engagement J-term book group selections include The Red Convertible (short stories), The Nordic Theory of Everything and The Handmaid's Tale. Sign up at cepe.luther.edu.
Service drive only
The drive between Facilities Services and Korsrud Heating Plant buildings is for the use by Facilities and Security staff only. All others please refrain from using the drive as a shortcut and obey the signs that are in place. This is for the safety of employees as they work between the two buildings. Facilities staff appreciate your cooperation.
Holiday sale in the Diversity Center
The Diversity Center is having a holiday sale 9 a.m.-4:30 p.m. Thursday-Friday, Nov. 30-Dec. 1. New arrivals from SERRV and great gift offerings will be available.
United Way update
We are at 82 percent of the college's goal of $14,000. Thank you for your support in making Winneshiek county a great place to live. There's still time to donate to the United Way.
Book Shop news
CAL Book Shop events
From 11:30 a.m.-2 p.m. Saturday and Sunday, Dec. 2-3, Harley Refsal, Luther professor emeritus, and James Miller '20, will have a wood carving demonstration in the Book Shop. They have created a limited edition Luther College wood carving ornament. Matteo Musso will be signing his new book, "Handbook of Us, Understanding and Accepting People with Autism," 11:30 a.m.-1 p.m. Saturday.
Chapel this week
Built into the class schedule and rhythm of life at Luther, chapel is a time for the community to gather for song, reflection and fellowship at 10:30 a.m. Monday, Wednesday and Friday in the CFL Main Hall. Faculty, staff, students and guests serve as speakers, musicians and artists.

'The Tree of Life My Soul Hath Seen'
In celebration of the holiday season, the faith of the community and the continued celebration of the 500th anniversary of the Reformation, Luther presents the 2017 production of "Christmas at Luther" Nov. 30-Dec. 3 in the CFL. This is the 38th season of "Christmas at Luther" performances. The five "The Tree of Life My Soul Hath Seen" performances are at 5:45 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 30; 6:30 p.m. and 9:15 p.m. Friday, Dec. 1; 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 2; and 2:30 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 3. A limited amount of tickets are still available.
Registered chamber group recital Dec. 4
The Luther Music Department presents a group recital consisting of Luther's registered chamber groups at 9 p.m. Monday, Dec. 4, in the Noble Recital Hall. This event is open to the public with no charge for admission. Groups are selected for the recital based on an application process. Chamber groups are faculty-coached. Each group is comprised of music students who show extreme dedication to their craft.
Christmas in the Union Dec. 6
Enjoy free cookies, hot chocolate and apple cider, as Luther celebrates "Christmas in the Union" 4:30-6:30 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 6. Santa will make an early stop in Decorah by the Union fireplace from 5-6:30 p.m. Other highlights include: kids crafts and activities, Christmas cartoons and live music, holiday dinner in the cafeteria, and reading of children's holiday books. The Book Shop activities include: an all-day Christmas sweater party with participants getting a treat, in-store promotions and Buddy the Elf specials. Buddy the Elf will visit between 5:30-6:30 p.m. Sign up for Santa's naughty or nice list. Free popcorn all day.
The family-oriented event is open to the public with no charge for admission, and is sponsored by SAC Special Events, Book Shop, Dining Services, PALS and LSEA.

Mary Overvold-Ronningen, associate professor of nursing, is retiring after 23 years of service to Luther. During her time at the college, Mary served as coordinator of the Rochester campus, an advisor for the Student Health Advisory Council, taught classes on the Rochester campus and served as interim department head. Join in wishing her well on her retirement 2:30-4:30 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 5, in the Sampson Hoffland atrium.
Sympathy
To Brian Solberg and his family on the death of his dad, Paul Solberg, Luther graduate, educator and coach. Paul passed away Tuesday, Nov. 28, at Aase Haugen in Decorah. Visitation is 4-7 p.m. Friday, Dec. 1, at Fjelstul Funeral Home in Decorah and Saturday, Dec. 2, at 9 a.m. at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church. Memorial services are 11 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 2, at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church in Decorah. Fjelstul Funeral Home in Decorah is in charge of arrangements.
Position openings
Development officer: Serves as an ambassador of the college with responsibility to build and develop long-term, donor-centric relationships built on a firm understanding of the donor's interest, passions and values. The primary objective of the officer is to advance the mission of the college by planning and implementing a program to identify, cultivate, solicit and steward prospective donors with major and planned gift potential in support of Luther's fundraising initiatives and institutional priorities. Qualified candidates will have at least three years extensive experience in development, major gifts or related area, and a proven track record in direct donor cultivation, solicitation and gift closure.

ARTICLES, CREATIONS, HONORS
Jim Eckblad was recently named the winner in the competition for best tip in the journal Popular Woodworking. His tip, titled "Cam Clamp Fence Micro-adjusters," appears in the December issue.
David Bishop recently completely two research projects. "Level of Grandparent Investment," was published in the Encyclopedia of Evolutionary Psychological Science. "Generativity and Alcohol Consumption in Middle Adulthood," poster was presented at the annual meeting of the Association for Psychological Science in Boston, Massachusetts, along with alumna Allura Lothary, Luther class of 2016, of North Carolina State University.
Drawing from his interests in public speaking and advocacy for disability rights, Mikayel Simonyan '20, of Tavush, Armenia, spent the summer as an intern at Bridge of Hope in Ijevan, Armenia. Bridge of Hope is a non-governmental organization that seeks the inclusion of children with disabilities in education, the public sphere and the economy. Observing an occupational therapist, Simonyan had the opportunity to work with children who have cognitive and developmental disorders including mutism, Down syndrome and autism.
