During this time, Dr. Brad Chamberlain, co-chair of the strategic planning committee, will assume leadership of the strategic planning committee, with assistance from Eric Runestad, vice president for finance and administration. COLLEGE OPERATIONS

Espinosa joins Board of Regents

Luther alumnus Peter Espinosa will join Luther College's Board of Regents President Carlson announced Wednesday. The regents serve as trustees and stewards, ensuring that Luther fulfills its mission and that the needs of students, faculty, staff and other college constituents are being met.

Additional insurance

Annually, participants in the Luther health plan need to go to the UMR website to indicate if they have additional health insurance. For example, a person's spouse might have additional coverage through their employer, etc. This will keep any disruption in payment of claims to a minimum as claims are processed. Click on the "Other Insurance" button in the middle of the screen and answer the questions, then click the "submit" button.

Health care reminder

Participants on Luther's employee health care plan have access to TELADOC. This service gives access 24 hours, 7 days a week to a U.S. board-certified doctor through the convenience of phone, video or mobile app visits. It's an affordable option for accessible medical care. The Teladoc doctors can treat many medical conditions, including: cold and flu symptoms, allergies, pink eye, ear infection, respiratory infection, sinus problems, skin problems and more. Call 1-800-Teladoc or visit Teladoc.com. Talk to a doctor anytime for $45 or less. Employees should set up an account before actually needing to call a doctor. For more information, call Marsha, 387-1415.

November staff meeting

Please attend one of the monthly staff meetings for November: 2 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 15, or 9 a.m. Thursday, Nov. 16, both in Peace Dining Room. Items on the agenda include an update on summer projects and the wind turbine by Jay Uthoff, Chandra Jennings with the 2018 health and wellness kickoff and an update on the Board of Regents.

Track airline mileage

Facilities would like to send a friendly reminder to please track airline mileage for use on the college's Carbon Footprint report. Luther has committed to keeping an inventory of its greenhouse gas emissions on an annual basis as part of the process to track its carbon footprint. This commitment requires gathering information related to all faculty, staff and student air travel miles paid for and/or reimbursed by the college, as well as college visitors flown to Luther on college expense. The Air Mileage Form can be found here.

Separating administrator rights from workstation login

Starting Wednesday, Nov. 15, faculty administrator rights will be separated from their workstation logins. Changes were made for staff workstations earlier this year. For more information see Administrator Rights on Faculty Workstations.

New at luther.edu

Katie Patyk '18 and Andy Hageman talk about their research project in which they explored the Kansas University archive that houses the papers of science fiction writer Theodore Sturgeon, who wrote acclaimed short stories, novels and TV screenplays. Patyk says, "The archives are a place of discovery, and while they don't always contain what you go in looking for, you are guaranteed to find something intriguing."

Gereon Kopf, who focuses on the religious and philosophical traditions of East Asia, says the most rewarding aspect of being a professor is the possibility to mentor students interested in East Asia, guide them in their struggles to understand new conceptual frameworks and cultures, and work with them on joint research projects.

EDITORIAL COMMENT

And finally...

This week, Nov. 5-11, is Drowsy Driving Prevention Week. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration estimates 100,000 police-reported crashes each year are attributed to drowsy driving. Those accidents result in 1,550 deaths, 71,000 injuries and $12.5 billion in monetary losses. Nearly half of American adults report they have driven drowsy, according to the National Sleep Foundation surveys. Before hitting the road this holiday season, get adequate sleep, schedule breaks during long trips, arrange for a travel companion and avoid driving after consuming alcohol or sedating medicines.
