Jazz Band concert Nov. 7

The Luther College Jazz Band is performing a concert at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 7, in the CFL Main Hall. The concert is open to the public with no charge for admission. The concert program features various styles of music from swing to funk to mambo and will include works from Stan Kenton, Oliver Nelson, Thad Jones and Neal Hefti.

Brass ensembles take the stage Nov. 8

Luther College's brass ensembles will perform at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 8, in the CFL. The concert is open to the public with no charge for admission and features a performance of Michael Smith's composition "Out of the Depths, I Cry to Thee." This work was composed for the Commemoration of the 500th anniversary of the Reformation and premiered during the Commemoration Service: Martin Luther's Penitential Hymn on Oct. 31. The piece features both the Luther College brass faculty and student performers.

Ryan Sallans Nov. 8

Born into a female body, international transgender speaker, consultant, publisher and author Ryan Sallans will discuss his personal journey of transformation from childhood body struggles and development of an eating disorder during college to coming out as transgender and the difficulties he's faced financially, emotionally and mentally at 6 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 8, in Valders Hall of Science Room 206. Following his presentation, he will sign copies of his book "Second Son: Transitioning Toward My Destiny, Love and Life." Copies of the book are available for purchase in the Luther College Book Shop or at the presentation. The event is sponsored by the Center for Ethics and Public Engagement and PRIDE.

Alumnus Steve Demuth presents lecture Nov. 9

As technology develops, so too does the use of digital medicine and personalizing care. Luther alumnus Steve Demuth, chief technology officer and head of the office of IT strategy and architecture at Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota, will present "Digital Medicine: Why Doctors and Computer Scientists Increasingly Need Each Other," at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 9, in Olin 102.

Philharmonia concert Nov. 9

Philharmonia will perform a concert at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 9, in the CFL Main Hall. The concert is open to the public with no charge for admission. 'The Cat in the Hat' Nov. 9

With a performance teaching children about caring, fairness, responsibility and trustworthiness, Theatreworks USA presents "The Cat in the Hat" at 10 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 9, in the CFL Main Hall. The performance is recommended for children in kindergarten to fourth grade. Area schools have seating priority for school matinees; community members are welcome as space is available. Each show is approximately one hour in length.

Slind to speak at Emeriti Colloquium Nov. 9

Thanks to the popularity of author Stieg Larsson's "Girl with the Dragon Tattoo" series and now the "Harry Hole" series by Jo Nesbø, the Nordic Noir genre has gained international readership. Luther College Professor Emeritus of History Marv Slind will speak on "Nordic Noir: Scandinavian Crime Fiction," during the Luther Emeriti Colloquium 3 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 9, in the Mott Room of Dahl Centennial Union on the Luther campus.

Celebrating 25 years of the Women and Gender Studies program

The Women and Gender Studies program invites the community to a birthday party celebrating 25 years of the program Friday, Nov. 10. SAC Cinema presents 'Wreck-It Ralph'

Student Activities Council Cinema will show "Wreck-It Ralph" at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Nov. 10, in Valders 206. A kid-friendly movie, this Disney film follows an arcade game villain who rebels against his role and aims to fulfill his dream of being a hero but causes chaos for everyone around him in the process. Admission is $5, and there will be free popcorn while supplies last.

Dorian Keyboard Festival

The Dorian Keyboard Festival will be held on campus Friday-Sunday, Nov. 10-12. Most of the students participating will be on campus Saturday, Nov. 11, playing for faculty, participating in workshops and performing in recitals. There are 48 students from grades 5-12 participating.

'Rent' opens Nov. 10

The VPA department presents "Rent," a 90s rock musical loosely based on Giacomo Puccini's opera "La Boheme," Nov. 10-11 and 16-19 in Jewel Theatre. Performances are at 7:30 p.m. Nov. 10-11 and Nov. 16-17, and at 1:30 p.m. Nov. 18-19. Tickets are free with Luther ID or $15 without. Following struggling artists living in the shadow of the AIDS epidemic, the show's stories of love and loss intertwine to promote living life to its fullest.

St. Martin's Day Dinner

Luther is hosting a St. Martin's Day Dinner as a festive conclusion to the 2017 Reformation Commemoration from 5:30-7 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 11, in Peace Dining Room. Inspired by the historical menu associated with this medieval harvest festival, the dinner will be served family style, include a short program of period music and offer a cash bar. Symphony Orchestra concert Nov. 12

Symphony Orchestra will present their fall concert at 4 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 12, in the CFL Main Hall. The performance is open to the public with no charge for admission. The program features "The Moldau" by Bedřich Smetana, then William Grant Still's "Ennanga" with a harp solo performed by Rachel Brandwein, adjunct faculty in music. The concert concludes with Symphony No. 5 in E minor Op. 64 by Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky.

'Ethnic Notions' viewing and discussion Nov. 12

Marlon Riggs' Emmy-winning documentary "Ethnic Notions" will be shown at 7 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 12, in the Mott Borlaug room. The documentary takes viewers on a disturbing voyage through American history, tracing for the first time the deep-rooted stereotypes which have fueled anti-black prejudice. Novian Whitsitt will facilitate the post-film discussion. This event is intended to start conversation and provide context before the "Hateful Things" exhibit opens Feb. 12.

Registered chamber groups recital Nov. 13 has been cancelled

The Luther College Music Department group recital consisting of Luther's registered chamber groups scheduled for at 9 p.m. Monday, Nov. 13, has been cancelled. No make-up date has been set.

'Representing the Other' in Disney

Join the Center for Ethics and Public Engagement in a discussion of how indigenous peoples are represented in modern American culture at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 15, in the CRH. Jordan Boge '17, will present research findings from his summer project, "Representing the Other: Disney and the appropriation of indigenous peoples in Moana and Beyond." ARTICLES, CREATIONS, HONORS

Richard Cole, emeritus professor of history, read a paper for the session "Renaissance and Reformation Thought: Humanism, Stoicism, and the Classical Tradition," at the Sixteenth Century Society and Conference last week. The title of his paper was "Martin Luther and Michel Montaigne Five Hundred Years after the Reformation." Cole also chaired and commented briefly on another session, "The Medieval Heritage, Humanism and the Understanding of History." Attending the meeting were more than 500 scholars, professors and students from all over the literate world.

Diane Scholl's poems "Elegy" and "Mezuzah" appear in the fall 2017 issue of the Louisville Review.

Andy Hageman is presenting "Panda Planet: An Intro to Chinese Science Fiction at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 15, at The Lingonberry, 218 W. Water St. The talk aims to introduce the general public to contemporary Chinese science fiction writers.

As part of his summer internship, Liam Fraser '18, worked with Interfaith Power and Light in planning a clean energy tour around Decorah, Iowa. Two local congregations hosted tour stops where Fraser helped highlight their efficiency and clean energy investments. The tour also incorporated a stop at a third faith community who collaborated in energy efforts with Luther College. That stop included discussion about Luther's success with solar PV and geothermal heating and cooling.

Kole Ruud '18, worked for the Wellmark Blue Cross Blue Shield of Iowa and South Dakota as a project manager intern this summer. Establishing a communication plan for the Sales, Training, Communication, and Membership and Enrollment groups, Ruud and his team were able to implement a product his team created for future agents to use. His team also managed the resource financing budget shared monthly with a senior leadership team.

Following the footsteps of a public health nurse, Charles Ian Ces '20, spent four weeks of his summer as an intern at the Tabaco City Health Unit in the Philippines. Shadowing a public health nurse and assisting with the programs for adolescent parents and blood donation, Ces witnessed the challenges in providing medical assistance in Tabaco City.

Belal Krayem '18, majoring in accounting and data science, served as an internal audit intern for the Federal Home Loan Bank of Des Moines, Iowa during summer 2017. Krayem made such an impression that he was offered a fall internship with the FHLB Operational Risk department. His fall internship consists of analyzing and reviewing data basis and quality assurance reports, giving him more experience in data science.

EDITORIAL COMMENT

And finally...

This week, Nov. 5-11, is Drowsy Driving Prevention Week. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration estimates 100,000 police-reported crashes each year are attributed to drowsy driving. Those accidents result in 1,550 deaths, 71,000 injuries and $12.5 billion in monetary losses. Nearly half of American adults report they have driven drowsy, according to the National Sleep Foundation surveys. Before hitting the road this holiday season, get adequate sleep, schedule breaks during long trips, arrange for a travel companion and avoid driving after consuming alcohol or sedating medicines.
