Message from President Carlson
I am pleased to announce that Brad Chamberlain, professor of chemistry and co-chair of the strategic planning process, will serve as interim dean for institutional planning and mission. He began transitioning into his new duties on December 1.
As interim dean, Brad will lead Luther's campus-wide strategic planning process and coordinate the college's re-accreditation process with the Higher Learning Commission through 2019. He will oversee two critical components of the re-accreditation process: federal compliance and the assurance review. Brad will also be responsible for the supervision of the Center for Ethics and Public Engagement, the Center for Sustainable Communities, Campus Programming and College Ministries.
Since 2001, Brad has been a professor of chemistry at Luther College, focusing on organic chemistry. He has served as chair of the Academic Planning Committee, the head of the department of chemistry and interim director of advising. He is currently participating in the Thrivent Fellows program for faculty and staff in Lutheran higher education.
Brad is replacing Terry Sparkes, who will be retiring in May 2018. Brad and Terry have worked closely together during the last year as they co-chaired the strategic planning process. Through May 2018, Terry will work on a part-time basis to support the strategic planning and re-accreditation processes. As Terry transitions into retirement, I would like to offer my thanks to her on behalf of the campus for her diligence and care in the strategic plan and scholars program, and her many years of service to the college.
Please join me in welcoming Brad to this leadership position. Brad's experience and knowledge as a faculty member, department chair and faculty committee leader, as well as his passion for and commitment to liberal arts higher education, will be great assets as he leads institutional planning and mission for Luther College.

Between the Dec. 6 staff Christmas "meeting" and the Dec. 8 Christmas luncheon hosted by President Carlson and Dr. Thomas Schattauer, $443 and several food items were donated. Health care notice
UMR is experiencing a processing issue with flu shot reimbursements for injections done at the Luther College Health Service. As a temporary measure, please send the claims reimbursement form and the receipt to the Luther Human Resources Office, Main 25. HR will submit the claims to a designated representative at UMR. UMR is devising a work-around for this problem but in the meantime this temporary measure will assure that you receive the full $25 reimbursement. Call Marsha, 387-1415, with questions.
Farwell elevator unavailable during Christmas break
A reminder to faculty and staff who use the Farwell elevator, winter break means the residence halls will be closed. Starting at 7 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 14, Farwell Hall will be locked. The hall will reopen at noon Saturday, Jan. 6.
Going paperless
The Office for Financial Services is in the process of going paperless with the implementation of the Perceptive Content imaging software already used by Alumni, Development and the Education department. How does this impact you? The paper process of approving vendor invoices will transition to an electronic process. Over the next couple months, OFS will train departments and move them to the electronic imaging approval system. Thank you in advance for your cooperation as the college transitions to a paperless process.

Electronic W-2s
All students, faculty and staff are encouraged to sign up to receive electronic W-2s using the link in the employee profile section of my.luther.edu. Electronic W-2s can be accessed from anywhere and cannot be lost. Those that chose the electronic option for 2016 need not do it again for 2017. More detailed instructions and additional information can be found by clicking the W-2 Options link on the HR website.
Luther soccer winter skills clinic
The Luther College men's and women's soccer programs are offering a winter skills clinic for students kindergarten through eighth grade from 4-6:15 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 7, and Jan. 14. The two-day clinic will be held in the Student Recreation Center of the Regents Center. All registrations must be made online by Saturday, Jan. 6, at www.luthersoccercamps.com. For the first time, the soccer programs will offer a mini winter skills clinic for pre-K students from 4-6:15 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 21. What is net neutrality?
Net neutrality has been all over the news lately, not quite sure why you should care? The Federal Communications Commission will be making a big vote Dec. 14 and help navigate this complex but important topic, information professionals at the Library have created a handy information guide about net neutrality.

'Humor in Everyday Conversation' Luther Emeriti Colloquium is Dec. 14
Human interactions are often marked by attempts at humor—serving to establish superiority through exclusion, provide relief from limits or surprise through incongruity. Luther College Professor Emeritus of Communication Studies Alan Lerstrom will examine the nature of humor in a presentation at 3 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 14, in the Mott Room as part of the Luther Emeriti Colloquium series.

To the family of Harlan G. Sanderson, 74, who passed away Nov. 27 in Eastman, Wisconsin. He is a 1969 graduate of Luther and worked in Preus Library for 31 years, from 1969-2000, becoming an associate professor media librarian. He also taught photography courses at Luther and exhibited his work locally.

Position openings
Head volleyball coach: Responsible for all aspects of the program, including but not limited to: practice organization, contest management, recruiting, staff hiring and development, budget oversight, student-athlete development and academic monitoring. Strong leadership and motivational skills are required; a record of integrity and the ability to inspire student-athletes to perform at a high level is essential; and a willingness to advance the goals and mission of Luther College while adhering to rules, policies and regulations. Qualified candidates will have a bachelor's degree (master's preferred) and at least 3-5 years college or high school coaching experience. This is a 10-month position running August-May. Desired start date is Jan. 3.

ARTICLES, CREATIONS, HONORS
Ron Ferguson and Char Kunkel attended the National Women's Studies Association annual meeting celebrating the 40th anniversary of the Combahee River Collective historic publication and Black Lives Matter Nov. 16-19 in Baltimore, Maryland. They presented their work "Intersections of Gender, Immigration and Racism: Lessons from a Racial Attitudes Survey."
An article by Andrew Carlson '17, "The Bioethics of Alzheimer's Care: A Story of Autonomy and Trust Gone Awry," was published in the most recent issue of the Penn Bioethics Journal, a peer-reviewed undergraduate bioethics journal at the University of Pennsylvania.
Participating in a mathematics program with 36 other undergraduate students at the University of California, Los Angeles, Onward Mahachi '18, served as an intern with Google Venice. At Google, Mahachi and three other students collaborated with an academic mentor from the program and three industry sponsors from Google on applied mathematics study.
Madeline McLean '19, served as a summer intern at the Patchwork Green and River Root farms. Typical weeks at the farms were comprised of two days focusing on harvesting and marketing and a day of transplanting crops. Any time in between was filled with weeding, pruning tomatoes and killing potato bugs.
