Thank you from the president
"What a beautiful campus." "Everyone here is so friendly." Just a few of the many compliments from the RAGBRAI riders last Friday as they passed through campus. President Carlson would like to extend many thanks to the Luther students, staff and faculty who worked hard to create a great experience for all of the riders and represented Luther so well.
RAGBRAI and Nordic Fest parade appreciation
Thank you to everyone who assisted with the RAGBRAI welcome and walked in the Nordic Fest parade this past weekend! Many riders shared that the big blue entrance was their favorite town welcome of the week. This weekend was indeed an overwhelming success. While there are numerous individuals to thank from this weekend, the staff in the Admissions Office especially wants to draw attention to time that Facilities and Security devoted to the RAGBRAI welcome and items for the parade. A few months ago, Steve Arneson responded to the first few requests for RAGBRAI by saying "anything is possible," perhaps not knowing what he was getting himself into. The Facilities team followed through on that first conversation and helped make College Drive memorable for all that rode through. Security continued to find ways to ensure the safety of everyone who visited our wonderful campus. Thank you! While RAGBRAI will likely not return to Decorah for a number of years. We will participate in the Nordic Fest parade again next summer so mark your calendars now to join our blue crew on Water Street Saturday, July 28, 2018!
KATIE workshop
Have you logged into katie.luther.edu lately? KATIE was upgraded in May, and the look is a bit different. There will be holding a come-and-go workshop 9 a.m.-3:30 p.m. Monday, Aug. 28. Watch the Tuesday for more information in the coming weeks.
Norse book club
Alum Keith Lesmeister '01 will have his first book "We Could've Been Happy Here" inducted to the Luther book Shop. The book store has a few signed copies, and Lesmeister will hold a book signing during homecoming weekend Oct. 7. Be sure to come in and support a fellow Norse.
Simulation actor needed
The Luther College Department of Nursing is looking for a male actor, preferably over the age of 55, to assist with simulations during the 2017-18 academic year. Friends or family of Luther faculty and staff as well as members of the Decorah community are great candidates. Actors are provided scripts and coaching for each simulation scenario and may be asked to memorize certain details. Compensation is provided. Interested or have questions? Contact Jessica at <raabje01>.
Luther pledges to support local municipal electric utility
Luther has pledged $15,000 to Decorah Power, a local citizens group, towards a feasibility study of a Municipal Electric Utility for Decorah. An MEU is a community owned electric utility, of which there are 136 in Iowa. Decorah has the option to consider an MEU because the 25-year electricity franchise agreement with Alliant Energy expires in 2018.
According to Decorah Power, a public electric utility could offer Decorah-area residents an opportunity to invest in local initiatives and promote local community ownership of Decorah's energy future. It could also help Decorah residents and businesses exercise local control over their sustainability and carbon reduction goals through locally owned electricity generation.
Fine Arts Collection reminder
As the campus settles into the depths of summer, faculty and staff are moving offices and resetting spaces. As a reminder, only Fine Arts Collection workers should be moving art work. Contact Kate, <ellika03>, if assistance is required with a work of art. Office check-outs will resume in September.
Luther students receive funding for summer internships
For the third consecutive year, Luther has combined funding from alumni donors and philanthropic agencies to give financial support to Luther students completing a variety of internships. During the summer of 2017, 38 Luther students received educational grants of up to $2,000 to help defray the costs associated with internships in locations that included nine states, the District of Colombia and six other countries.
