Oneota Market is closed all day Tuesday, Aug. 8, due to staff training. It will reopen at 7:30 a.m. Wednesday, Aug. 9.

Friendship families needed

Learn about the world from your kitchen table! The Luther Diversity Center is still in need of a few Friendship Families for the incoming class of international students. Participation requires only your hospitality and interest in others. Meet your student once a month for a simple meal or activity and help them adjust to their first year at Luther and in the United States. ITS computer refresh changes

As part of the College’s cost-saving measures, two changes are being implemented this refresh cycle, which began with the 2016-2017 academic year. First, ITS will be "supercharging" computers rather than purchasing new computers. In addition, the college is moving from Macs to Windows computers where possible. Solar eclipse observation event

The Luther College Society of Physics Students and Preus Library are pleased to invite all members of the Luther community to a solar eclipse observing event, Monday Aug. 21, on the library lawn. The eclipse will begin about 11:46 a.m. and will end at about 2:34 p.m. Minimum light will occur around 1:10 p.m. when more than 85% of the sun will be eclipsed. Members of the Society of Physics students will be on hand and will have some observing glasses and pinhole projection systems to allow safe viewing. An interpretive display describing details of this relatively rare celestial event will be in Preus Library, beginning Monday, Aug. 14. KATIE workshop

Have you logged into katie.luther.edu lately? KATIE was upgraded in May, and the look is a bit different. There will be a come-and-go workshop about the upgrade 9 a.m.-3:30 p.m. Monday, Aug. 28. Watch the Tuesday for more information in the coming weeks.

Norse book club

The first book by Keith Lesmeister '01, "We Could've Been Happy Here" is available at the Luther Book Shop. The shop has a few signed copies, and Lesmeister will hold a book signing during Homecoming Weekend, Saturday, Oct. 7. Be sure to come in and support a fellow Norse.

Simulation actor needed

The Luther College Department of Nursing is looking for a male actor, preferably over the age of 55, to assist with simulations during the 2017-18 academic year. Friends or family of Luther faculty and staff as well as members of the Decorah community are great candidates. Actors are provided scripts and coaching for each simulation scenario and may be asked to memorize certain details. Compensation is provided. Interested or have questions? Happy Hour Book Group to feature Luther grad

Decorah Public Library's Happy Hour Book Group will meet with Luther graduate Keith Lesmeister '01, at Rubaiyat at 5 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 16, to discuss "We Could've Been Happy Here," Lesmeister's debut collection of short fiction. Copies of the book are available for purchase at local booksellers, the Book Shop and for check-out at the Decorah Public Library. Call 382-3717 to reserve a library copy or to reserve an 11-copy set for your book group to check out after mid-August.

Family fun day

Luther faculty, staff and families are welcome to join the Luther community at the men's and women's soccer games 3-4:30 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 3, for the Luther Family Fun Day. Enjoy root beer floats and watermelon while cheering on the Norse. Children have the opportunity to get autographs from their favorite Luther athletes as well as a chance to dunk faculty, staff and coaches in a dunk tank. Don't forget to dress in blue and white to get ready for another great year at Luther.

New positions

Ryan Engelman has accepted the position of Interim Assistant Director of Student Activities. He will replace Kasey Nikkel, who has started her new position as the Director of Student Rights and Responsibilities and Assistant Dean. Engelman will begin working with Student Activities Aug. 15, which also happens to be his birthday.

ARTICLES, CREATIONS, HONORS

Bacteria can adapt rapidly to environmental changes or responses of an immune system. For his summer research project Max Eness, '20 of Ames, Iowa, is researching the drug resistance of bacteria found in bodies of water around Decorah. Working alongside Eric Baack, Luther associate professor of biology, Eness is isolating bacteria from springs and streams used for recreation in NE Iowa and testing the bacteria's resistance to antibiotics. Drug resistant bacteria threaten to change basic health care practices that rely on antibiotics, and identifying possibilities of contamination in local communities helps to address the issue.

As various forms of religion exist throughout the world and have existed for thousands of years, research is attempting to understand the psychology behind why so many humans turn to religion and how religion impacts societies. Emma Deihl, Luther College senior of New Prague, Minnesota, is researching attachment to God, moral foundations, self-control and self-regulation for her summer research project at the college. Deihl is working with David Njus, Luther professor of psychology, on her project "Attachment to God, Moral Foundations, and Self-Control."

Quarks are the smallest things that science has discovered, shown experimentally to be about a million billion times smaller than a grain of sand. Zach Martin, Luther College junior of Boone, Iowa, is researching the physics of quarks and the forces by which they interact for his summer research project at the college. Martin is working with Todd Pedlar, Luther associate professor of physics, on his project "Charm Meson Production in Bottomonium Decays."

Professor of English David Faldet participated in the seminar "Landscape and Identity in Britain and the United States (1770-1914)" at the Yale Center for British Art from July 23-29, sponsored by the Council of Independent Colleges. Faldet presented to the seminar on the field studies and watercolors of 19th-century Devonshire naturalist Mary Anne Burges.

Holly Moore participated in the Council for Independent College's Ancient Greece in the Modern Classroom seminar, “The Verbal Art of Plato,” which took place July 24–30 at Harvard University’s Center for Hellenic Studies campus in Washington, DC. The seminar was led by renowned classicist Gregory Nagy, Francis Jones Professor of classical Greek literature and professor of comparative literature at Harvard University, and Kenneth Scott Morrell, associate professor of Greek and Roman studies at Rhodes College.

Stephanie Diebel, Luther class of '15, has been accepted as a regular member of the Chicago Civic Orchestra. Diebel will be playing horn for the orchestra.
