Faculty, staff, emeriti and guests are invited to attend the annual Service of Dedication at 3:30 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 24, in the Center for Faith and Life Main Hall. President Carlson will deliver her State of the College address and new faculty and staff will be introduced. Offices are allowed to close for the Service of Dedication so as many employees as possible can attend. A reception will follow in Bentdahl Commons.

Solar eclipse observation event

The Luther College Society of Physics Students and Preus Library are pleased to invite all members of the Luther community to a solar eclipse observing event, Monday Aug. 21, on the library lawn. The eclipse begins at 11:46 a.m. and ends at 2:34 p.m. Minimum light will occur around 1:10 p.m. when more than 85 percent of the sun will be eclipsed. Members of the Society of Physics students will be on hand with some observing glasses and pinhole projection systems to allow safe viewing. An interpretive display describing details of this relatively rare celestial event is in Preus Library. Fall sports performance clinics start Aug. 21

Luther College Sports Performance is now taking registrations for the 2017 Fall Sports Performance Clinics. Clinic sessions will be held in Regents Center at Luther College. Clinics will run weekly from Monday, Aug. 21-Dec. for grades 6-8, meeting Monday and Thursday from 6:30-7:30 p.m. Clinic cost is $100/month for two days/week or $15 a session. Luther reduces move out waste by 40 percent

Move out week at Luther College has historically been the week in which Luther sends the most waste to the landfill of any week throughout the year. Students worked more than 400 hours over the course of nine days to assist with move out waste diversion by educating their peers about recycling and donation processes. This year, Luther students donated eleven 18-foot trucks worth of goods to the Depot and Spectrum Network and nearly 2,000 pounds of food to Decorah's First Lutheran Church food pantry. The college reduced the tonnage brought to the landfill by 40 percent.

KATIE workshop

Have you logged into katie.luther.edu lately? KATIE was upgraded in May, and the look is a bit different. There will be a come-and-go workshop for faculty and staff regarding the upgrade 9 a.m.-3:30 p.m. Monday, Aug. 28, in Hovde Lounge. KATIE support team members will be available to answer questions and help build 2017 fall course sites. Please bring a laptop and some relevant course information, such as a syllabus or meeting notes. 

Join Luther students for WILD

Luther juniors taking Elementary Music Methods are offering Wednesday "In-service" with Luther at Decorah (Lutheran Church). The music class is available for students in grades three through six from 8-8:50 a.m. Wednesday mornings, running Sept. 6 through Dec. 6. They will be supervised by Luther faculty members.  There is no cost for the class, but 60 spots available. Friendship families needed

Learn about the world from your kitchen table! The Luther Diversity Center is still in need of a few Friendship Families for the incoming class of international students. Participation requires only your hospitality and interest in others. Meet your student once a month for a simple meal or activity and help them adjust to their first year at Luther and in the United States. ITS computer refresh changes

As part of the college's cost-saving measures, two changes are being implemented this refresh cycle, which began with the 2016-17 academic year. First, ITS will be "supercharging" computers rather than purchasing new computers. In addition, the college is moving from Macs to Windows computers where possible. Family fun day

Luther faculty, staff and families are invited to the Sept. 3 the men's and women's soccer games at 2 and 4 p.m., respectively, and take part in the Luther Family Fun Day between games from 3 to 4:30 p.m. Enjoy root beer floats and watermelon while cheering on the Norse. Children have the opportunity to get autographs from their favorite Luther athletes as well as a chance to dunk faculty, staff and coaches in a dunk tank. Don't forget to dress in blue and white to get ready for another great year at Luther.

ARTICLES, CREATIONS, HONORS

In 1967, Luther College's Nordic Choir went on its first tour of Europe; Norway, West Germany and East Germany, led by Luther Professor Emeritus of Music Weston Noble. Fifty years later, Aidan Spencer '18, of Decorah, Iowa, is creating a documentary of the historic first tour for her summer research project at the college. Spencer is working with Jacqueline Wilkie on her project "To This Day: Remembering Nordic Choir's First International Tour."

Latin America possesses some of the world's most restrictive abortion laws and also some of the highest maternal mortality rates. Rebecca Buse '19, of Eden Prairie, Minnesota, is researching the possible connections between these two phenomena for her summer student-faculty collaborative research project at the college. Buse is working with Victoria Christman on her project titled "Pro-Choice for Life? A Statistical Analysis of Abortion Law and Maternal Mortality."

Human serum albumin is the most abundant protein found in human blood plasma. Emily Starman '18, of Coralville, Iowa, is using steady-state fluorescence spectroscopy to research how curcuminoids, a major component of the spice turmeric, bind with HSA for her summer research project at the college. The curcuminoid-HSA complex has many potential applications, including use in a cancer treatment called photodynamic drug therapy. The group's collaboration is funded through a grant from the Howard Hughes Medical Institute. Starman is working with Olga Michels on her project.

Quarks are among the smallest science discoveries, shown experimentally to be about a million billion times smaller than a grain of sand. Joshua Jackson '18, of East Dubuque, Illinois, is researching the physics of quarks and the forces which bind them together into composite objects for his summer research project. Jackson has spent the past two summers working with Todd Pedlar on his project "Charm Meson Production in Bottomonium Decays."

Robert Christman gave a paper titled, "Martin Luther and the Antwerp Augustinians, 1519-1523" at the 13th International Congress for Luther Research in Wittenberg, Germany Aug. 1. He also participated in the Congress's weeklong seminar on the art and life of Lucas Cranach the Elder. Christman's article, "Early Modern German Historians Confront the Reformation's First Executions," was published in the volume "Archeologies of Confession: Writing the German Reformation, 1517-2017," edited by Carina Johnson, et al. New York: Berghan Books, 2017, pp. 242-261.

Heather Armstrong performed an oboe/English horn recital at the International Double Reed Society Conference in Appleton, Wisconsin, Thursday, June 22. Her program, "The Music of Brooke Joyce," featured two pieces written by Associate Professor of Music and Composer in Residence Brooke Joyce: "Prairie Etudes" for English horn and electronics, and "Une Cité Moderne," an oboe concerto Armstrong premiered with the Waterloo-Cedar Falls Symphony in 2014. Joyce played piano and assisted with electronics for the IDRS performance.

Coming up: United Way of Winneshiek County is hosting a Family Fun Night 5-6:30 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 17, at the lower level parking lot of the Decorah Library. Lots of free activities including face paining, bubbles, a fishing game and a bean bag toss. Class offered: Learn the Norwegian language while exploring cultural activities of Norway. The class will be led by a team of students from the Luther College Nordic studies program, under the supervision of Maren Johnson, assistant professor of the Nordic studies program.
