Viniard-Weideman appointed vice president for communications and marketing

Luther College President Paula J. Carlson has announced the appointment of Aimee Viniard-Weideman as vice president for communications and marketing at Luther. She will begin her new duties Sept. 5.

"Ms. Viniard-Weideman has a passion for Luther's values and mission, and she has experience and expertise to lead innovation and strategic change in order to share the Luther story in new, creative, and compelling ways," said President Carlson. "As vice president for communications and marketing, she will build on the strong foundation Rob Larson built as the college's first vice president for communications and marketing."

Service of Dedication Aug. 24

Faculty, staff, emeriti and guests are invited to attend the annual Service of Dedication at 3:30 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 24, in the Center for Faith and Life Main Hall. President Carlson will deliver her State of the College address and new faculty and staff will be introduced. Offices are allowed to close for the Service of Dedication so as many employees as possible can attend. A reception will follow in Bentdahl Commons.

Parking restrictions Aug. 25-26

Saturday, Aug. 26, Luther will fill with excitement as first-year students and their families experience the joy of moving into residence halls. For many this will be an emotional experience as the students embark on a new adventure and parents see them on their way. In order to help facilitate the move-in process, parking areas near the halls will be reserved to accommodate the movers. Special parking restrictions will go into effect starting at 5:30 p.m. Friday, Aug. 25. The small parking lot south of Ylvisaker and the lot north of Valders will be reserved for unloading vehicles. High Street between Jenson-Noble and Campus House will be designated as a one-way street, west to east. There will be no parking on the south side of the street. Faculty, staff and students are asked to refrain from parking in these areas. Thank you for your cooperation in extending this welcome to the new members of the Luther community.

COLLEGE OPERATIONS

Toner phone scams

Several offices have recently received a phone call from an unidentified source asking for specific details about the copier or printer in the office. These callers demand information regarding the brand and model number of the machines in the office and attempts to send toner with an invoice that is three or four times the regular retail price. The majority of copiers/printers on campus are under a contract with Ricoh to supply the toner, parts and service. Ricoh will not call offices for ordering toner and supplies. It is not recommend to offer them any of information; giving them any information will only help fuel the next caller's tactics. It is best to request they not call again and disconnect the call. Book Shop news

Let the Book Shop help your department and Luther save money by using its buying power. Ask Book Shop employees to quote the price of special order mugs, books, clothing, etc. Unlike other vendors, all money spent at the college-owned bookstore stays on campus to support the Luther community.

Luther Women's Basketball Junior Norse

Join Luther women's basketball for the fourth year of Junior Norse. Girls in grades two through five are invited to improve their fundamental skills and learn to love the game of basketball with the 2017-18 LCWBB team. Junior Norse meet four Thursdays this fall (Sept. 14, 21, 28 and Oct. 5) from 6:15-7:30 p.m. in the Regents Center main gym. Cost is $45 and includes a T-shirt. Luther reduces move out waste by 40 percent

Move out week at Luther College has historically been the week in which Luther sends the most waste to the landfill of any week throughout the year. Students worked more than 400 hours over the course of nine days to assist with move out waste diversion by educating their peers about recycling and donation processes. This year, Luther students donated eleven 18-foot trucks worth of goods to the Depot and Spectrum Network and nearly 2,000 pounds of food to Decorah's First Lutheran Church food pantry. The college reduced the tonnage brought to the landfill by 40 percent.

KATIE workshop

Have you logged into katie.luther.edu lately? KATIE was upgraded in May, and the look is a bit different. There will be a come-and-go workshop for faculty and staff regarding the upgrade 9 a.m.-3:30 p.m. Monday, Aug. 28, in Hovde Lounge. KATIE support team members will be available to answer questions and help build 2017 fall course sites. Please bring a laptop and some relevant course information, such as a syllabus or meeting notes. 

Join Luther students for WILD

Luther juniors taking Elementary Music Methods are offering Wednesday "In-service" with Luther at Decorah (Lutheran Church). The music class is available for students in grades three through six from 8-8:50 a.m. Wednesday mornings, running Sept. 6 through Dec. 6. They will be supervised by Luther faculty members.  There is no cost for the class, but only 60 spots available. ComedySportz performance Aug. 27

The Luther College Student Activities Council invites the community to laugh and interact with ComedySportz at 8 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 27, in the Center for Faith and Life Main Hall on the Luther campus. Hailed as a fast-paced comedy show that is fun for all ages, ComedySportz is improvisational comedy played as a "sport" by members of the World Comedy League. The event is open to the public with no charge for admission.

Family fun day

Luther faculty, staff and families are invited to the Sept. 3 men's and women's soccer games at 2 and 4 p.m., respectively, and take part in the Luther Family Fun Day between games from 3 to 4:30 p.m. Enjoy root beer floats and watermelon while cheering on the Norse. Children have the opportunity to get autographs from their favorite Luther athletes as well as a chance to dunk faculty, staff and coaches in a dunk tank. Don't forget to dress in blue and white to get ready for another great year at Luther.

Norse Athletic Association Fall Sports luncheon Sept. 5

Luther's Norse Athletic Association invites the community to the NAA Fall Sports Luncheon at noon Tuesday, Sept. 5. The luncheon, held in Peace Dining Room on the second floor of Dahl Centennial Union, costs $5 per person. A great chance to get firsthand information on Norse athletics, the luncheon features all of the fall sport coaches speaking on their respective seasons to date. The 2017-18 Norse Business Sponsors will be presented their plaques for the year, and an update on the new and ongoing facilities projects will be given as well. Attendees can get a nearly eagle-eye view of the new blue turf football field and the renovated tennis courts from the Peace Dining overlook. 'Great Places' art exhibit Aug. 30-Oct. 11

"Great Places," an exhibit featuring oil paintings by Carl Homstad, Decorah artist and Luther alumnus, will be on display Aug. 30-Oct. 11 in the Luther College Center for Faith and Life. The exhibit is open to the public with no charge for admission.

Job postings

Admissions Counselor or Assistant Director of Admissions: Full time. Primary responsibilities include coordinating the recruitment of students from a specific geographical region, visiting targeted high schools and attending select college fair programs. Extensive travel is required, and candidates must be able to work evenings and weekends when appropriate. Based on the level of experience of the successful candidate, the title will be either Admissions Counselor or Assistant Director.

Administrative assistant: .69 FTE, 11-month position, providing support to the Director of Student Activities and the Dahl Centennial Union. Duties include general receptionist work, approving advertisements and promotional requests, reserving spaces, scheduling hours, maintaining website and Datatel records, and organizing the annual activities fair. Some driving required. Qualified candidates must have a high school degree, additional training in office procedures and Microsoft Office Suite, and a valid driver's license. Two years experience in office setting preferred.

ARTICLES, CREATIONS, HONORS

Messier 23, also known as M23, is an open cluster in the constellation Sagittarius. Torger Jystad '19, of St. Charles, Minnesota, is researching and observing eclipsing binary stars in M23 as part of his summer research at the college. Jystad is working with Jeff Wilkerson on this ongoing project.

The foreign exchange market is the largest financial market in the world, transferring billions of dollars' worth of foreign currencies between countries. Hakam Abdul El Mitshu '18, of Tripoli, Libya, is researching and building opening and closing strategies for foreign exchange traders for his summer research project at the college. He is working with Tony Mutsune on his project "How Awareness and Planning Could be the Key to Successful Forex Trading."

With a greater focus on science, technology, engineering and mathematics in schools, more children are being encouraged to look at pursuing a career in these fields. Kathleen Woods '18, of Savanna, Illinois, helped develop and implement the Adventures with Chemistry middle school camp for her summer research project at the college. Woods worked with Molly Wilker and Olga Michels on her project.

The electric guitar is rarely heard in chamber ensembles, but new-age composers are working to expand the instrument's role within the Western classical tradition. This summer, Andrew Murray '18, of North Mankato, Minnesota, is researching different styles and unique arrangements in compositions for the electric guitar. He is working with Brooke Joyce on this project.

Human serum albumin is the most abundant protein found in human blood plasma. Megan Roozeboom '18, of Oskaloosa, Iowa, is using steady-state fluorescence spectroscopy to research how curcuminoids, a major component of the spice turmeric, bind with HSA for her summer research project at the college. Roozeboom is working with Olga Michels, on her project.

Robert Christman's entry, "Martin Luther and the Papacy," was published in the "Dictionary of Luther and the Lutheran Traditions," Timothy Wengert, ed., Grand Rapids: Baker Academic, 2017, pp. 570-574.

Andy Hageman presented a research talk "The Strange Infrastructures of China Miéville" at the 75th World Science Fiction Convention in Helsinki, Finland Aug. 12, and he chaired a panel called "Bringing SF into University Courses."

Dean Vesperman was published in the Spring/Summer issue of the Ohio Social Studies Review. The article, titled "'Voting is Power!': Preservice social studies teachers' conceptions of democracy," was cowritten with David R. Caulfield of Indiana University. The article focuses on a study that revealed that having preservice social studies teachers engage in systematic reflection on democracy and citizenship leads to an evolution of their conception of democracy. This research has been presented at the College and University Faculty Assembly of the National Council for the Social Studies and American Educational Research Association annual conferences.

Class offered: Learn the Norwegian language while exploring cultural activities of Norway. The class will be led by a team of students from the Luther College Nordic studies program, under the supervision of Maren Johnson, assistant professor of the Nordic studies program. EDITORIAL COMMENT

And finally...

Friday, Aug. 25, is National Park Service Day. It marks the 101st birthday of the National Park Service, which manages all national parks, many national monuments and other conservation and historical properties.

Iowa has two national parks, including one just 35 miles from Decorah. Check out Effigy Mounds in Harpers Ferry, which features more than 200 American Indian mounds, located in the Upper Mississippi River Valley. Enjoy a picnic, stop at the visitors' center, walk a trail or take a guided tour while enjoying northeast Iowa in late summer.

Or take a drive to West Branch and visit the Herbert Hoover historical site, the other National Park in Iowa. Activities include a visitors' center, Herbert Hoover Presidential Library and Museum and trails.
