Fall semester Opening Convocation Aug. 31

Welcome the class of 2021 and celebrate the start of a new academic year at Opening Convocation at 9:40 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 31, in the Center for Faith and Life. Convocation speaker is Meline Toumani, author of "There Was and There Was Not," the 2017 summer reading. The book explores the question of what makes us human, and how we can see humanity in those with whom we are at odds.

All students, faculty and staff are encouraged to participate. If possible, offices should close so all can attend.

Garbage reminder

As a reminder to all faculty, staff and community members, Luther College trash dumpsters, and those of the contractors, are only for the disposal of college-generated waste. Use of them for personal waste generated off-campus is prohibited. The recycling bins for cardboard, plastics, metal and paper are open for use by all.

Reason CMS training

This fall, web content is offering two different Reason classes. Reason 101 is for people who have never received Reason training or feel like they need a refresher after summer. Reason 201 is for those who have mastered the basics of Reason but would like a reminder about specific guidelines and learn about new features. Sessions are Thursday, Aug. 31 through Sept. 14. Employee wellness fall class registration

Registration is open for the first fall six-week session of employee wellness yoga, pilates and tai chi classes. Details and the registration form for each are available on the recreational services website. The cost is $24 for each six-week session and is open to current employees and spouses. Nobel Peace Prize Forum

Toner phone scam

Several offices have recently received a phone call from an unidentified source asking for specific details about the copier or printer in the office. These callers demand information regarding the brand and model number of the machines in the office and attempts to send toner with an invoice that is three or four times the regular retail price. The majority of copiers/printers on campus are under a contract with Ricoh to supply the toner, parts and service. Ricoh will not call offices for ordering toner and supplies. It is not recommend to offer them any of information; giving them any information will only help fuel the next caller's tactics. It is best to request they not call again and disconnect the call. Luther women's basketball Junior Norse

Join Luther women's basketball for the fourth year of Junior Norse. Girls in grades two through five are invited to improve their fundamental skills and learn to love the game of basketball with the 2017-18 LCWBB team. Junior Norse meet four Thursdays this fall (Sept. 14, 21, 28 and Oct. 5) 6:15-7:30 p.m. in the Regents Center Main Gym. Cost is $45 and includes a T-shirt. 'Great Places' art exhibit Aug. 30-Oct. 11

"Great Places," an exhibit featuring oil paintings by Carl Homstad, Decorah artist and Luther alumnus, will be on display Aug. 30-Oct. 11 in the Luther College Center for Faith and Life. The exhibit is open to the public with no charge for admission.

'Just Passing Through' art exhibit Sept. 1-Oct. 8

Featuring paintings and 3-D objects created by Luther College Alumnus Robby Scott, the exhibit "Just Passing Through" will be on display Sept. 1-Oct. 8 in the Kristin Wigley-Fleming Fine Arts Gallery in the Center for the Arts on the Luther campus. The gallery is open to the public with no charge for admission.

SAC presents Dead Horses

Milwaukee-based folk band Dead Horses will take the "stage" at 6 p.m. Friday, Sept. 1, in Bentdahl Commons. Despite their youth, Dead Horses have crafted a timeless sound, informed as much by early-American prose as it is modern Americana music. Tickets are $8.

SAC Fest

Featuring lawn games and root beer floats, SAC Fest is open to the Luther community 11 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 2; no charge for admission.

Jim Wand to perform Sept. 2

With more than 30 years in the field of hypnosis and 11,000 professional engagements under his belt, Master Hypnotist Jim Wand makes a return visit to Luther with a 7:30 p.m. show Saturday, Sept. 2, in the Center for Faith and Life Main Hall. Movie night

Faculty music showcase

Featuring strong vocals and precision on strings, woodwinds and piano, Luther music faculty will present a showcase concert at 4 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 3, in the Main Hall of the Center for Faith and Life.

Family fun day Sept. 3

Luther faculty, staff and families are invited to the Sunday, Sept. 3, men's and women's soccer games at 2 and 4 p.m., respectively, and take part in Luther Family Fun Day between games from 3 to 4:30 p.m. Enjoy root beer floats and watermelon while cheering on the Norse. Children have the opportunity to get autographs from their favorite Luther athletes as well as a chance to dunk faculty, staff and coaches in a dunk tank. 'Beyond the Barbed Wire'

Learn about the unique experiences of Japanese Americans who came to Minnesota after being forced into internment camps following Pearl Harbor at "Beyond the Barbed Wire: Documentary on Japanese Internment during WWII" at 7 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 3, in Valders 262. Norse Athletic Association Fall Sports Luncheon Sept. 5

Luther's Norse Athletic Association invites the community to the NAA Fall Sports Luncheon at noon Tuesday, Sept. 5. The luncheon, held in Peace Dining Room on the second floor of Dahl Centennial Union, costs $5 per person. A great chance to get firsthand information on Norse athletics, the luncheon features all of the fall sport coaches speaking on their respective seasons to date. The 2017-18 Norse Business Sponsors will be presented their plaques for the year, and an update on the new and ongoing facilities projects will be given as well. Reunion film and peace building

Nobel Peace Prize nominee Steinar Bryn from the Nansen Center for Peace and Dialogue (Norway) has spent years educating students and politicians on his methodology of peace dialogue. Tuesday, Sept. 12, Bryn will screen the film "Reunion," and host a discussion of peacemaking in the modern world from 5-7 p.m. in Olin 102. Sponsored by the Center for Ethics and Public Engagement, the Dean's office and the Nansen Center for Peace and Dialogue.

Facilities Services administrative assistant: .75 FTE, six-hours per day, 12-month position as administrative assistant to administer the College fleet and serve as one of the administrative assistants/receptionists in the Facilities Services office. ARTICLES, CREATIONS, HONORS

Human serum albumin is the most abundant protein found in human blood plasma. Emily Fuller, '19, of Bettendorf, Iowa, is researching the interactions between curcuminoids and Human Serum Albumin using steady-state fluorescence spectroscopy for her summer research project at the college. Fuller is working with Olga Michels on her project. 

Susan Schmidt published an entry "Special Immigrant Juvenile Status" in the Encyclopedia of Social Work Online, published by Oxford University Press and the National Association of Social Workers Press.

​Emeritus William Kuhlman performed a series of recitals in Sitka, Alaska, on the historic 1844 Kessler pipe organ at Sitka Lutheran Church, assisted by Yvonne Kuhlman. Earlier in the month, they recorded organ excerpts for KUAW, the National Public Radio outlet in the area. They have been serving as summer docents at Sitka Lutheran Church, interpreting the narrative regarding the connections between the Russian occupation in the 18th and 19th centuries and the subsequent arrival of the Finnish/Lutheran governor, clergy and pipe organ in the 1840's and their impact on the island's cultural and religious life. ​

Maryna Bazylevych was awarded St. Mary's College Visiting Women's Fellowship at Durham University, United Kingdom. She will spend J-term 2018 working on her book project that examines feminization of healthcare in post-socialist region. The purpose of the Visiting Women's Fellowship is to provide an opportunity for women scholars to conduct research at Durham University in conjunction with staff within a Durham academic department or Research Institute. The output of the fellowship must be of direct benefit to women in the fellow's own country or beyond.

EDITORIAL COMMENT

And finally...

Saturday, Sept. 2, is recognized as international bacon day. Celebrate the occasion by trying out a new bacon-inspired recipe.

Bacon ginger snap cookies

Ingredients

* 1/2 cup rendered bacon fat
* 1/4 cup shortening
* 1 cup granulated sugar
* 1/4 cup corn syrup
* 1 egg
* 2 cups all-purpose flour
* 1 tsp salt
* 2 tsp baking soda
* 2 tsp ground ginger (or more to your taste)
* 1/2 tsp ground cloves
* 1/2 tsp ground cinnamon

Instructions
1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees F.
2. Cream the fat and the sugar in a mixer, then add the egg. Once thoroughly mixed, slowly add the remainder of the ingredients to the mixture. Continue to mix until a dough forms. You can refrigerate the dough for an hour or so to make the dough easier to handle. Form and place 1-inch dough balls onto a cookie sheet sprayed with a non-stick spray. Leave two inches between each cookie as they will spread out as they cook. Use the tines of a fork to slightly flatten the dough balls on the cookie sheet. Bake for 6-8 minutes. Remove from the cookie sheet and cool on a rack.
