Hurricane relief efforts

Our hearts go out to students, faculty, staff and alumni with family and friends in the paths of the hurricanes. To be added to the prayer list, sent an email to <ministry>.

Current information and links for hurricane recovery​ efforts ​and donations are posted on the ELCA Gulf Coast Synod website. College Ministries encourages donations be sent to Lutheran Disaster Response as 100 percent of gifts go directly to ​relief efforts. Luther's Student Congregation is planning a "Caf Fast" to help students raise funds. Watch the Bulletin and Tuesday for details.

The Luther athletics department donated $500 and raised another $150 to send south for Hurricane Harvey Relief. Money raised was in honor of the Garcia-Prats family. Chris and James Garcia-Prats, Luther soccer coaches, are originally from Texas and still have a lot of family there. To contribute a gift to the cause, contact <julie>.

Hazing Policy

Hazing, by its very nature, is an activity that is counter to Luther’s mission statement. Student organizations, teams, ensembles and groups are expected to conduct themselves in accordance with the college's mission statement and the Code of Conduct. New members of organizations, teams, ensembles and groups can expect to participate in educational and fun activities that build teamwork and camaraderie among all members. Such activities are intended to create a sense of identity and commitment within a group and are generally acceptable and encouraged. Students should check with the appropriate staff, advisors, sponsors, and/or coaches if there is any question about an activity constituting hazing. The Hazing Policy can be reviewed in the Student Handbook.

Informational meeting on DACA Thursday

Students, faculty and staff who have questions about DACA and the implications of recent changes to DACA for the community are invited to meet with Yer Vang from 9:45-11 a.m. Thursday, Sept. 14, in Qualley Lounge. Vang is an immigration attorney who serves as director of Immigration and Refugee Services for Catholic Charities, and works in the Decorah area. Why prepare for law at Luther? Luther alumni from a variety of majors have earned law degrees. Book Shop news

From 10 a.m.-noon Saturday, Sept. 23, members from the Luther Pep Band will be applying free Luther tattoos and playing tunes in the Book Shop as a part of family weekend.

Luther named a Cool School

Luther College was named one of the Sierra Club's Cool Schools. For 2017, Luther holds the highest ranking for Iowa Private Colleges and is one of only a few ELCA schools recognized on the list. Luther ranked 116th on the Cool Schools list with 536.4 points out of a possible 1,000. Wartburg, a fellow Iowa Intercollegiate Athletic Conference school, came in at 141st with 513.58 points. Luther and Wartburg were the only Iowa private colleges recognized.

LCCS will hold a Mental Health First Aid training 8 a.m.-5 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 13. The eight-hour training is free, including manuals, and is open to staff and faculty. Speech and Debate Center now open

Know a student who might need help on a presentation? Want to encourage students to practice a presentation before class? The Speech and Debate Center is here to help. Reunion film and peace building

Nobel Peace Prize nominee Steinar Bryn from the Nansen Center for Peace and Dialogue (Norway) has spent years educating students and politicians on his methodology of peace dialogue. Tuesday, Sept. 12, he will screen the film "Reunion," and host a discussion of peacemaking in the modern world. 5-7 p.m., CRH. Constitution Day celebration

LCEC meeting Sept. 14

The Luther College Emeriti Colloquium will meet at 3 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 14, in the Mott Room. The speaker is retired biologist Jim Eckblad, and he will be discuss "Things That Float" and his experience making some. All members of the Luther College community are invited to attend.

Anthropology, Archaeology and Museum Studies Visit Day

Luther is hosting an Anthropology, Archaeology and Museum Studies Visit Day Friday, Sept. 15. The day is designed to provide prospective students who are interested in anthropology, archaeology and museum studies with the opportunity to explore those programs at Luther. Prospective students will engage in conversations with anthropology, archaeology and museum studies faculty about academics, research and study abroad opportunities, as well as with current Luther students majoring in those programs.

AAUP meeting Sept. 15

Luther's chapter of the American Association of University Professors will meet for the first time of the year at 4 p.m. Friday, Sept. 15, in the Hovde Room in Preus Library. All faculty are invited to attend and learn about the important work of the AAUP.

First guest recital series performance

Opening the 2017-18 guest recital series, Luther College welcomes Violinist Hirono Borter and Pianist Kyoko Kaise at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Sept. 15, in the Noble Recital Hall of the Jenson-Noble Hall of Music on Luther's campus. The performance is open to the public with no charge for admission.

Tennis court dedication

The dedication for the new Luther outdoor tennis courts is 10 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 16. The men's and women's teams will take on Luther alumni after the ceremony. All are invited to attend. 

Center Stage Series: Spanish Brass

The 2017–18 Center Stage Season begins Saturday, Sept. 16, with Spanish Brass. Since its founding in 1989, the quintet has been dazzling international audiences with a repertoire ranging from baroque to flamenco to jazz. It is one of the most renowned brass ensembles touring today. Gundersen Medical System is sponsoring the performance, and tickets are available from the Luther College Ticket Office, 387-1357, or online at tickets.luther.edu.

Science and Pre-Health Visit Day

Luther College is hosting a Science and Pre-Health Visit Day Saturday, Sept. 16. The day is intended to introduce prospective students interested in biology, chemistry, computer and data science, environmental studies, nursing, physics, psychology or neuroscience to these programs at Luther. Monarch butterfly tagging event

The migration of monarch butterflies to Mexico has begun, and for that reason the Luther College entomology class will host a monarch butterfly migration banding event in Anderson Prairie on the Luther campus 1:30-4 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 17. This event, open to the public, will help provide data on the fall migration of this unique and well-known butterfly.

Faculty Artist Series: Rachel Brandwein and Gregory Peterson

Rachel Brandwein and Gregory Peterson will present a Faculty Artist Series recital featuring music for harp and organ at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 19, in the Center for Faith and Life on Luther's campus.The recital is open to the public with no charge for admission. The performance features works by Brandwein, Aaron David Miller, Marcel Grandjany, Edward Elgar and Michael Praetorius. 

Foster, Scott to speak at Luther College Woman's Club meeting

Philosophy Club presents Daniel H. Andreotti Memorial Debate 'Is Abortion Permissible?'

Demonstrating that political conflict in an organized and cordial arena can be a force for peace and reconciliation, the Philosophy Society is hosting a debate on the topic of abortion between sophomores Ashalul Aden and Shannon Baker at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 20, in the Recital Hall of the CFL. Moderated by Philosophy Society president Max Eness, the debate approaches the topic from an ethical and political standpoint.

SAC Cinema presents "Spiderman: Homecoming" at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 21, in Valders 206. Doors open at 7 p.m. Peter Parker is just a normal high school freshman by day but a crime fighting superhero once the bell rings. When a new threat comes to town, will Peter's homecoming plans be foiled? Admission price is $5 and includes free popcorn while supplies last.

Upcoming blood drive

Luther is hosting a blood drive in Brunsdale Lounge between Miller and Deiseth Hall from 11 a.m.-5 p.m. Wednesday and Thursday, Sept. 25 and 26. Members of the sponsoring organization, Alpha Phi Omega, will table downstairs in the Union by Marty's Thursday and Friday, Sept. 14-15, and Monday through Wednesday, Sept. 18-20, from 11 a.m.-1 p.m. and 5-7 p.m.

Tickets are on sale now for the Ben Rector concert at Luther, set for 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 7, in the Center for Faith and Life Main Hall. Doors open at 6:45 p.m. Tickets for the performance are $25. Rector has sold more than 250,000 albums and has more than 2 million downloads.

Sympathy
Sympathy to the family of Robert Jenson on his Sept. 5 death. Robert studied classics and philosophy at Luther in the late 1940s and returned to Luther to teach religion and philosophy in the mid 1950s. ARTICLES, CREATIONS, HONORS

Invasive species have the ability to spread to a degree that can cause damage to the environment, economy and human health, among other things. Shelja Thakur '18, of Satiwala, Himachal Pradesh, India, saw the first-hand effects of these invasive species during her summer research project when she participated in land stewardship projects on Luther's natural areas to remove plants such as European buckthorn and garlic mustard. Thakur worked with Molly McNicoll on her project, which was funded through the Howard Hughes Medical Institute.

Runestone Interactive was founded in 2011 by Brad Miller, Luther College professor of computer science. Tyler Conzett '19 of Galena, Illinois, maintained and developed features for Runestone Interactive's online webservice for his summer research project at the college. Conzett worked with Brad Miller on his project "Runestone Interactive."

In 1685, hundreds of thousands of Huguenots were forced to flee France attempting to seek refuge in other countries. Karina Hoff '20 of Hortonville, Wisconsin, researched the lives of French Huguenots to create a game based in 17th and 18th century Europe for her summer research project at the college. Hoff worked with Maren Johnson and Anne-Marine Feat along with other Luther students on the project "The Stories We Tell."

Kristy Gould wrote a chapter in the second edition of the four-volume series "Learning and Memory: A Comprehensive Reference" that was published in 2017. Her invited chapter, Memory in Food-Hoarding Animals, reviews the work done in both birds and rodents on this topic over the past few decades, with an emphasis on recent findings.

Alfredo Alonso Estenoz's book "Borges in Cuba. Estudio de su recepción" (Borges in Cuba: A Study of his Reception) was published in September. The book, part of Alonso's sabbatical research project, deals with issues of ideology and literature, cultural policies and the Cuban Revolution's impact on the reception of Borges' work as well as on literary criticism in Latin America.

Alpha Phi Omega has received the Chapter of Excellence Gold Level award from the APO National Office. This award is given to a chapter that has programs of leadership, friendship and service which promote growth, retention and stability for the active chapter, while providing a positive, inviting and educational environment for members.
