HLC accreditation evaluation–opportunity to comment
Luther College is seeking comments from the public about the college in preparation for its periodic evaluation by its regional accrediting agency. Luther College will have its next reaffirmation visit March 11, 2019, with a team representing the Higher Learning Commission. Luther College has been accredited by HLC since 1915. The team will review the institution's ongoing ability to meet HLC's Criteria for Accreditation.
The public is invited to submit comments that address substantive matters related to the quality of the institution or its academic programs. Comments may be submitted to the following address:

January staff meeting
The monthly staff meetings for January are 2 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 8, and 9 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 9. Both meetings are in Peace Dining Room.
Not too late to get the flu vaccine
Forgot your flu vaccine? It's not too late! According to the CDC, flu activity is elevated nationally so get a flu shot today! Health Service has vaccines available anytime during office hours Monday-Friday, no appointment necessary. Students may charge to their account. Faculty/staff pay at the time of service and can submit to insurance for full reimbursement.
Not Quite Free Lunch Jan. 15
Join colleagues at the Not Quite Free Lunch 11:30 a.m.-1:15 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 15, in the Nobel Room, sponsored by Wellness. Boost social and emotional wellness by getting away from the typical work space and mingling with folks from across campus. The charge is $5, payable by cash, check or Luther ID. The menu includes a build your own turkey fajita bowl, tossed salad and dessert, all from the simple servings line. Contact Wellness, <wellness> with questions.
Dorian festival on campus Jan. 13-14
More than 1,000 students will be on campus Sunday and Monday, Jan. 13-14, for the Dorian Vocal Festival. Coming from 215 schools, these students will sing under the direction of the Luther choral faculty for two days, and about 300 students will take lessons with the Luther voice faculty. Thank you for helping to welcome these students to campus, and for making them feel welcome in the Cafeteria, common spaces and residence halls.
HR Update
A Remote Work Policy has been created and is now in effect. The purpose of the policy is to establish consistent guidelines and criteria to be used to determine, review and manage employment at a remote location. The policy may be found on the Policies page of the Luther website. Contact your vice-president/dean for more information.
ELITE Winter Futsal Training registration open
Join Decorah United Soccer Club and Luther College Men's and Women's Soccer for ELITE Winter Futsal Training. ELITE Winter Futsal Training is open to beginners who want to experience the joy of playing indoor soccer while learning the basics, as well as experienced players looking to take their game to the next level by getting some extra training during the winter season. ELITE Winter Futsal Training is a nine-session training program with an emphasis on training the individual and how that individual fits into a small-sided setting (4v4 or 5v5). Training will include soccer-specific technical and agility/explosive training for 15 minutes as well as 45 minutes of small sided play. Visit http://www.neiaelitetraining.com/ to register. Dance Cardio class offered
The Wellness Department is excited to offer "Dance Cardio" class Wednesdays in January from noon-12:45 p.m., beginning Jan. 9. This four-week class is only $15 per employee. Register here.

SAC Cinema: 'The Breakfast Club' Jan. 11
The 1980s classic "The Breakfast Club" is the January SAC Cinema selection. The movie, which follows five high school students from different cliques during a Saturday morning detention, is 7:30 p.m. Friday, Jan. 11, in Valders 206. Doors open at 7 p.m. Admission is $5, with free popcorn while supplies last.
Mid-Winter Community Day Jan. 12
Luther College, in partnership with Decorah Bank & Trust, invite all area families and friends to enjoy an afternoon of food, fellowship and fun at the 2019 Mid-Winter Community Day Saturday, Jan. 12, in the Regents Center. Roger Pulliam to give MLK Lecture Jan. 21
With the assassination of Martin Luther King Jr. in April 1968, students across the country staged sit-ins and challenged discriminatory practices in an attempt to create more minority representation on college campuses. Roger Pulliam, who witnessed the formation of the Martin Luther King, Jr. Student Scholars Academy at Western Michigan University, will give the 2019 Martin Luther King, Jr., Day Lecture. Pulliam's lecture, "A 50-year retrospective on Martin Luther King, Jr.'s impact on African American students' presence in higher education," is 7 p.m. Monday, Jan. 21, in Valders Room 206.

Position openings
Full-time assistant director of safety and security: The assistant director is responsible for providing direction and assistance to department personnel during emergency and routine calls for service. Candidates should have an associate-level degree in criminal justice or related field, with a bachelor's degree preferred; minimum of three years of security or law enforcement experience preferably in a college setting; valid driver's license with clean driving record; clear criminal history; and extensive public contact and/or customer service experience. Additional years of experience and related training may be substituted for the associate degree. A bachelor's degree may be substituted for years of experience.
Full-time housing coordinator: The housing coordinator serves as the office manager for the residence life office and works cooperatively with the director of residence life. The coordinator interacts extensively with a wide range of constituencies. The position requires excellent interpersonal skills; three-to-five years of relevant work experience or equivalent combination of education and experience; excellent oral and written communication skills; and the ability to work collaboratively with a broad range of people. Previous experience in a detailed-oriented, complex and highly public work environment is preferred. Experience using Word and Excel programs is required.

Andy Hageman published an essay on Jacques Tati's film "Mon Oncle" ["My Uncle"] and David Lynch's "Twin Peaks" on https://25yearslatersite.com/.
The American Psychological Association journal, Health Psychology, published the empirical article, "Hostility, Forgiveness, and Cognitive Impairment Over 10 Years in a National Sample of American Adults." The research was conducted by Professors Loren Toussaint and Stephanie Travers with Luther graduates Emily Green and Kelly Kennedy, and members of the Laboratory for Investigation of Mind, Body, and Spirit. The Luther lab collaborated with professors from the University of California-Davis and University of California-Los Angeles. Toussaint was also interviewed for the piece, "Ellen DeGeneres Forgave Kevin Hart for His Past Homophobic Comments. Here’s What We Can Learn From Her Decision."
