Luther will be open: Please use extreme caution

The National Weather Service is predicting dangerous and historic cold temperatures today through Thursday.

As a residential college, Luther will remain open. While the college will remain operational to care for our students, we want all of our employees and students to be safe in this extreme weather. We ask all employees to please use caution and your best judgment in traveling to and from the college.

If you feel you need to stay home, please contact your supervisor to make arrangements and to let them know that you are safe. According to human resources, you may use vacation time or make other arrangements with your supervisor should you choose not to come to campus.

These weather conditions are dangerous so please exercise caution when venturing outside. Exposed skin can be frostbitten in a very short period of time. Review email sent this morning for "Extreme cold safety tips" and let <julie> know if you did not receive that email.

President Carlson encourages faculty, staff to attend midyear update, convocation

Faculty and staff are invited to attend both President Carlson's midyear update at 1 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 5, in Valders 206, and spring semester opening convocation at 9:40 a.m. Thursday, Feb. 7, in the CFL.

During the midyear update, President Carlson will update the campus community on the strategic plan, the upcoming re-accreditation review by the Higher Learning Commission and key priorities for the semester ahead.

Tiffany Patterson, Vanderbilt University associate professor of African American and diaspora studies, and history, and director of undergraduate studies in African and African diaspora studies, will give the Luther College spring convocation address, "Black Students and the Creation of Black Studies."

At convocation, the college will present the Spirit of Luther award to Bob Naslund, a much-loved member of the Luther community. Bob coached in the Luther Athletics department for more than 20 years, serving as head coach for both track and field, and football.

If possible, offices should close for both events so all can attend.

Certified mental health first aid openings

Want to be a certified mental health "first aider"? A limited number of openings exist for faculty or staff members to participate in Adult Mental Health First Aid. The course runs from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. with a one hour lunch break Monday, Feb. 4, in Olin 112. MHFA teaches how to help someone developing a mental health problem or experiencing a mental health crisis. There is no charge for the training; participants earn a three-year certification. Curriculum revision conversations for faculty

The Curriculum Revision Task Force has two opportunities scheduled for faculty conversation. Save these dates to join the CRTF in the CRH to talk about ideas and provide feedback: 10-11 a.m. Tuesday, Feb. 5, and 9:40-10:50 a.m.Tuesday, April 23. Annual Wii Bowling Tournament in the Book Shop
Team entries are due Friday, Feb. 15, and the Wii Bowling tournament starts the week of Feb. 11 and runs through March 15. 'Black Students and the Creation of Black Studies'

Faculty Artist Series: Luther College Piano Quartet

Luther College Piano Quartet presents a program of chamber music at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 9, in Luther's Noble Recital Hall in the Jenson-Noble Hall of Music. The performance is open to the public with no charge for admission. Luther College Piano Quartet, now in its 11th year, is comprised of four Luther music faculty; Miko Kominami, piano; Igor Kalnin, violin; Spencer Martin, viola; and Philip Borter, cello.

Symphony Orchestra to perform Vienna homecoming concert

Upon returning from a 25-day residency in Vienna, Austria, the Luther College Symphony Orchestra will perform a homecoming concert at 7 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 10, in the Main Hall of the Center for Faith and Life on Luther's campus. The performance is open to the public with no charge for admission.

Readings and discussion group available

Selected readings and a discussion group are available ahead of Ibram Kendi's Feb. 28 Distinguished Lecture. Read the prologue of Kendi's "Stamped From the Beginning: The Definitive History of Racist Ideas in America" (National Book Award Winner) and two other short articles. Professor Guy Nave will lead discussion from 9:40-10:50 a.m. Thursday, Feb. 21, location TBD, and Kendi will be on hand for follow-up conversation the afternoon of Feb. 28. Position openings

Full-time Regents Center custodian: Hours will generally be 2-10 p.m. Tuesday through Friday and 8 a.m.-4:30 p.m. Saturdays. Must be able to read sufficiently to follow instructions, work with little supervision, complete work thoroughly and promptly, and be self-motivated. High school diploma or equivalent preferred but not required. No experience required, will receive on-the-job training.

Full-time custodial weekend lead: Support weekend custodial staff in both academic and residential buildings. This position will work weekends to be custodial support for events as needed and then adjust hours during the week to equal 40 hours. Typical work schedule is 6 a.m.-6 p.m. Saturdays and Sundays, and 1-7 p.m. Wednesdays through Fridays (weekday hours negotiable). Must be able to work with little supervision, complete work thoroughly and promptly, and be self-motivated. High school diploma or equivalent required.

February is American Heart Month, and Friday, Feb. 1, is Go Red For Women day where people across the country wear red in support of the 33 percent of American women who are affected by heart disease and stroke. Usually we wear blue for Bleed Blue Fridays, but maybe this Friday we join together to wear red. #GoRedForWomen
