Krahn Family Student Life Service Award

Nominees for this award must be current sophomore or junior students who have contributed to campus life in a way that embraces the spirit and mission of Luther College. Any student, faculty or staff member may nominate a student. This award is designed to recognize a student who makes a positive impact to student life. The $1,000 award is expected to be over and above any financial assistance a student receives. The nomination form can be found online. Nominations are due by April 12.

Kuh Family 'Positively Luther' Award

This award is given each year to a student whose character, leadership, and participation in co-curricular and other educationally purposeful activities enhances the quality of campus life. The recipient must be in good academic standing with a demonstrated need for financial assistance. This $5,000 award is expected to be over and above the financial aid package offered by the College. Students may apply for this award through April 12.

ICF-McElroy student/faculty research call for proposals

Applications require dual authorship by the student(s) and a sponsoring faculty member. Students must be juniors or seniors in Fall 2019. Funds may be used to support all expenses of research project except faculty stipends. Maximum award is $2,000. Luther may submit up to four proposals. The internal deadline is Wednesday, April 10, to Dean's Office, Union 262.

BSU 50th Anniversary

Closing events for the BSU 50th Anniversary will be held Friday-Sunday, April 26-28. The weekend celebration kicks off with a reception at Norby House at 5:30 p.m. Friday, and closes with a Gala Dinner at 5:30 p.m. Saturday. More information on these and additional activities running Thursday through Sunday can be found online. With the exception of the Gala Dinner, the weekend’s events are open to the public with no charge for admission. Tickets for the Gala Dinner are $35, RSVP online. Student research symposium abstracts

This year's Student Research Symposium and Senior Recognition Convocation will be held on Friday, May 10. Submissions for student abstracts are due Friday, March 22. Students are encouraged to share their research and creative work by applying online.

Luther employee fitness classes

Sign up today for the final fitness sessions of 2019 for wellness subsidized employee Yoga and Zumba classes. Details and the registration form are available on the online fitness class site. Classes are open to current employees and their spouses. Email, <wellness>, with questions.

Call for proposals-The Sophomore Slowdown event

As part of Next Steps for Sophomores, Luther will host The Sophomore Slowdown from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Thursday, April 4, in the Union. The goal of this event is for sophomores to pause and engage in "big questions" about the rest of their Luther experience and beyond.

Failure stories wanted!

In support of the upcoming, Here’s My Story: I Failed panel event on March 13, Counseling Service has circulated a tri-fold board in the Union, Regents, Valders, CFA, Jensen, Brandt, Ylvisaker and Olin. Today is the last day to read the anonymous stories of others failures, or add to it. In a culture where we are often afraid to fail, we hope to normalize failure by speaking of it.

Prescribed fire and burn crew training session

Interested in being on Luther's prescribed burn crew? Attend a training session at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, March 12, in Valders 262. You will learn about goals for using fire in our woodlands and prairies, and about fire safety and responsibilities while on a burn. Habitat for Humanity spring break trip

Let students know there are a few spots left on the Luther College Habitat for Humanity Spring Break Service Trip to Santa Fe, New Mexico! No skills are necessary, just a great attitude and a willingness to work hard and have fun. We will leave on the evening of March 22, and return on March 29. The cost is $475, which covers bus transportation, lodging, food while in Santa Fe and a donation to Habitat for Humanity for supplies, etc. Please contact <habitat> or <marlowch> for more information. 'Here's My Story: I Failed' March 13

Failing isn't on anyone's to-do list, but what if more emphasis was placed on failure as a productive learning tool? New York Times Best Selling author Brené Brown reminds us that if we are brave enough, often enough, we will fail, and that's not necessarily a bad thing. 'Growing Older Without Growing Up: The "Parrothead" Life' March 14

Giving a multimedia introduction to Jimmy Buffett's extensive career, Marv Slind, professor emeritus, will present the lecture, "Growing Older Without Growing Up: The 'Parrothead' Life" at Luther's Emeriti Colloquium, at 3 p.m. Thursday, March 14, in the Mott Room of the Union.

CSS: Goitse March 14

Multi-award winning quintet Goitse (pronounced Go-wit-cha) will perform as part of the Center Stage Series at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, March 14, in the Center for Faith and Life Main Hall. The group's distinctive sound lies in the quality of their own compositions interspersed with traditional tunes from the countryside of Ireland and abroad — making each performance unique. Tickets are $26 for adults, $24 for seniors 65+ and $15 for youth ages 4-18. Dinner will also be available at 5:30 p.m. before the performance in Peace Dining Room. Luther theatre department presents 'Appropriate' March 15-17

Luther's theatre department presents Branden Jacobs-Jenkins' "Appropriate," a story of siblings colliding over a contentious family history while settling the accounts of the newly-dead Lafayette patriarch. Performances take place in the Jewel Theatre in Luther's Center for the Arts at 7:30 p.m., Friday, March 15; 1:30 p.m. Saturday, March 16; 7:30 p.m. Saturday, March 16; and at 1:30 p.m. Sunday, March 17. 

SAC Cinema presents 'Green Book' March 15

A working-class Italian-American bouncer becomes the driver of an African-American classical pianist on a tour of venues through the 1960s American South in "Green Book" at 7 p.m. Friday, March 15, in Valders 206, with a 7:30 p.m. movie start time. Admission is $5. Free popcorn while supplies last.

Faculty Artist Series: Igor Kalnin March 16

Igor Kalnin will give a recital at 7 p.m. Saturday, March 16 in the Noble Recital Hall. Kalnin will perform on the violin in a chamber ensemble Duo MemDi.

Spring Oratorio concert March 17

Luther's music department presents the biennial Spring Oratorio concert, featuring Luther's Symphony Orchestra, Nordic Choir, Collegiate Chorale and Cathedral Choir. The performance includes Francis Poulenc's Gloria and Leonard Bernstein's Chichester Psalms in commemoration of Bernstein's 100th birthday. The concert will take place at 4 p.m. Sunday, March 17, in Luther's Center for Faith and Life Main Hall.

Luther College Woman's Club hosts local historical groups March 19

Winneshiek County's history is rich and thanks to the efforts of several local organizations, that history has been and continues to be preserved for generations to come. Representatives of four local organizations—the Winneshiek County Historical Society, the Winneshiek County Historic Preservation Commission, the Decorah Historic Preservation Commission and the Decorah Genealogy Association—will present "Current News" at the group's next meeting at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday, March 19, in Peace Dining Room. 'When I Get to Heaven, I'm Gonna Jump and Shout: Female Artists and the Life-Changing Song "Oh Happy Day"' March 19

Luther presents the 2019 Sihler Memorial Lecture featuring guest speaker Deborah Smith Pollard, University of Michigan-Dearborn Professor of English Literature and Humanities. Focusing on performances of the gospel music standard "O Happy Day" by female performers, the lecture commemorates the 50th anniversary of the Black Student Union at Luther College, at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, March 19, in the Recital Hall of the Center for Faith and Life.

Women, Faith and Finance seminar April 12

On Friday, April 12, Luther is hosting the 15th annual Women, Faith and Finance seminar at the Hotel Winneshiek. Women of all ages are invited to come and learn more about financial management, decluttering/simplifying and volunteering time/talent. Cost is $30—bring a friend, and each save $5. ARTICLES, CREATIONS, HONORS

Robert Christman's article, "The Controversy over Original Sin with an Eye Toward its Origins in the Synergistic Controversy" was published in the volume titled, "Matthias Flacius Illyricus, Biographische Kontexte, theologische Wirkungen, historische Rezeption," ed. Irene Dingel et al., (Goettingen: Vandenhoeck & Ruprecht, 2019). 

Storm Bailey, professor of philosophy, has been appointed as the Center for Ethics and Public Engagement faculty research fellow. The appointment is for two years beginning in the fall of 2019.

Jim Martin-Schramm, professor of religion, has been announced as the new director of the Center for Sustainable Communities. He serves a three-year term as director beginning spring semester of the 2018-2019 academic year.

Junior Kristen Hansen and sophomore Piper Wood have been selected as Peace Scholars for the 2018-19 academic year. The pair will spend six weeks studying peace and dialogue in Lillehammer and Oslo, Norway.

A study by Samantha McAllister '12, and Mary Whipple '09, examining smoking in patients with fibromyalgia and the effects on cognitive function was published in "Mayo Clinic Proceedings: Innovations, Quality & Outcomes."
