Message from the Board: Dr. Jenifer K. Ward Elected 11th President of Luther College

We are pleased to announce that the Board of Regents has unanimously elected Dr. Jenifer K. Ward as the 11th president of Luther College. Dr. Ward presently serves as provost and dean of the college for Centenary College of Louisiana in Shreveport, Louisiana. The election of Dr. Ward by the Board of Regents followed a unanimous recommendation from the presidential search committee. Please see the full announcement for more information.

Scott announced as Vice President for Equity, Inclusion and Student Success

Luther College President Paula J. Carlson announced the appointment of Lisa M. Scott as vice president for equity, inclusion and student success. Scott has served as the inaugural dean for institutional equity and inclusion at Luther since August 2017.

"I am thrilled that Lisa Scott is assuming this new leadership role at Luther," said President Carlson. "Over the past two years, she has served as a strong, invaluable senior leader at the college. In this new role, Lisa will continue to serve as a key leader in the community's work together to achieve the vision for inclusive excellence and student success the college embraced in our new strategic plan, 'Inspired. Empowered. Engaged.'"

Scott will serve as the first vice president for equity, inclusion and student success at the college, a re-visioning of the former dean for institutional equity and inclusion position. She will continue to be a member of the senior administrative leadership team and a key leader and voice on issues of diversity, equity and inclusion. In this new role, Scott will also work with colleagues across campus to foster student success in every aspect of college life.

Brand Strategy KATIE site

A reminder to staff and faculty to visit the Brand Strategy site on KATIE. Individuals will need to self-enroll as students to access slides from recent brand strategy presentations, as well as a form that can be used to submit thoughts and feedback. Institutional Values Reading and Discussion Group

In support of the revision of the all-college requirements identified within the 2018-2023 Strategic Plan, faculty and staff are invited to participate in a reading and discussion group focused on the characteristics of a liberal arts education and the mission and values of Luther College in the 21st century. Readings for the discussion group will

• Identify opportunities within higher education to transform general education programs
• Explore how the college's Lutheran heritage shapes the community and the curricular and co-curricular offerings

The group will meet in Preus Library, Hovde Room, from 4-5 p.m. on the following Fridays: March 22, April 5, April 12, April 26, May 3 and May 17. Faculty and staff may participate in the discussion group on a session-by-session basis; please go to the Dean's Office webpage and scroll down to Upcoming Events to register for each session. Readings for the discussion group are available on our KATIE course page; please note that participants will need to enroll as a student in the KATIE course. The 2019 UMR health care summary plan description (SPD) is available on the HR website. The Luther College Retirement Plan (TIAA) SPD is also available on the HR website. 

Internet Maintenance March 25

ITS will be performing maintenance on Luther's internet connection between 5 p.m.-midnight on Monday, March 25. Internet service on campus will be available during much of this time, but there will be periods of time when it is not available. Updates on the maintenance will be posted to the ITS blog at https://www2.luther.edu/its/blog/.

Call for proposals

The Paideia Endowment Governing Board invites members of the Luther community to propose presentations on the theme "Resistance and Resilience" for the 2019-20 Texts and Issues Lecture Series. Participants are encouraged to address the theme from the perspective of a wide variety of texts drawn from the arts, sciences and humanities. If interested, please submit a tentative title and a brief 250-word proposal by Friday, April 15.

Youth Mental Health First Aid Training

There will be Youth Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) certification training at 8 a.m.-5 p.m. April 27, in Olin 101. This workshop helps participants recognize risk factors and warning signs of mental health problems, acquire skills to assess immediate problems, intervene to connect young people (12-18 years) with professional care, and understand the prevalence of disorders. Climate Justice Week: April Reading Groups

Join a reading group to prepare for the following guests' visits to Luther as part of Climate Justice Week (May 1-2). Readings include a selection of articles by/about Roslien Lecturer and "Father of Climate Change," Prof. Jim Hansen, and "We Rise," Xiuhtezcatl (Shoe-tez-caht) Martinez's book about the Earth Guardian movement to restore the planet. Chair Massages Restart March 25

Wellness is hosting a new massage therapist on campus for $20/15 minute chair massages, paid by cash, check or card at appointment or booking, from 1-5 p.m. every other Monday this spring, starting March 25. Chair massages can help reduce muscle tension, improve blood flow/circulation, increase energy-improving productivity, decrease anxiety and enhance immune system function. New travel expense policy

In order to improve compliance with IRS requirements, Luther’s travel expense policy has been updated. Three major changes in the new policy are:

1. A $40 daily meal limit
2. Meals are not reimbursable for travel without an overnight stay
3. Travel costs not substantiated with receipts within 60 days of the travel will be processed through payroll as taxable income

OFS will present the new policy at March staff meetings and can set up additional learning sessions. Questions should be directed to the OFS.

For any web changes, updates and additions, please submit a web content request through our ticket system, found here: https://www2.luther.edu/web-content/request/.

All requests will be prioritized accordingly and responded to by one of our team members. We ask that you give two weeks lead time for all requests to be completed. This policy allows the digital marketing team (also known as web content team) to prioritize and complete requests in a more timely and organized manner.

All email requests will be directed to the request form before work will be added to the queue.

Krahn Family Student Life Service Award

Nominees for this award must be current sophomore or junior students who have contributed to campus life in a way that embraces the spirit and mission of Luther College. Any student, faculty or staff member may nominate a student. This award is designed to recognize a student who makes a positive impact to student life. The $1,000 award is expected to be over and above any financial assistance a student receives. The nomination form can be found online. Nominations are due by April 12.

Kuh Family 'Positively Luther' Award

This award is given each year to a student whose character, leadership, and participation in co-curricular and other educationally purposeful activities enhances the quality of campus life. The recipient must be in good academic standing with a demonstrated need for financial assistance. This $5,000 award is expected to be over and above the financial aid package offered by the College. Students may apply for this award through April 12.

ICF-McElroy student/faculty research call for proposals

Applications require dual authorship by the student(s) and a sponsoring faculty member. Students must be juniors or seniors in Fall 2019. Funds may be used to support all expenses of research project except faculty stipends. Maximum award is $2,000. Luther may submit up to four proposals. The internal deadline is Wednesday, April 10, to Dean's Office, Union 262.

BSU 50th Anniversary

Closing events for the BSU 50th Anniversary will be held Friday-Sunday, April 26-28. The weekend celebration kicks off with a reception at Norby House at 5:30 p.m. Friday, and closes with a Gala Dinner at 5:30 p.m. Saturday. More information on these and additional activities running Thursday through Sunday can be found online. With the exception of the Gala Dinner, the weekend’s events are open to the public with no charge for admission. Tickets for the Gala Dinner are $35, RSVP online. Student research symposium abstracts

This year's Student Research Symposium and Senior Recognition Convocation will be held on Friday, May 10. Submissions for student abstracts are due Friday, March 22. Students are encouraged to share their research and creative work by applying online.

Luther employee fitness classes

'When I Get to Heaven, I'm Gonna Jump and Shout: Female Artists and the Life-Changing Song "Oh Happy Day"' March 19

Luther presents the 2019 Sihler Memorial Lecture featuring guest speaker Deborah Smith Pollard, University of Michigan-Dearborn Professor of English Literature and Humanities. Focusing on performances of the gospel music standard "O Happy Day" by female performers, the lecture commemorates the 50th anniversary of the Black Student Union at Luther College, at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, March 19, in the Recital Hall of the Center for Faith and Life.

Paideia Texts and Issues Lecture April 2

Scenes of food and eating in women's fiction, cookbooks and domestic manuals provide a rich forum for exploring questions of national identity and belonging at the turn of the twentieth century. Marie Drews, assistant professor of English, will explore Winnifred Eaton's fiction and recipes in "The World on a Plate: Ambivalent Encounters at the American Table," the final Paideia Texts and Issues lecture of the 2018-19 Journeys and Hospitalities series, at 7 p.m. April 2, in the CFL Recital Hall. A reception will follow in Qualley Lounge.

'Challenges to Interfaith Collaboration' April 4

All are invited to "Challenges to Interfaith Collaboration," the opening Plenary of the Interfaith Forum, with interfaith leaders from around the world, at 7 p.m. April 4, in the CRH. 'Religious Bigotry and Interfaith Collaboration in the Midwest' April 5

CSS: Evolution April 6 

Evolution is a "lyrical and imaginative" (The Associated Press) one woman show depicting three members of a family dealing with their youngest daughter's mental illness. Evolution challenges our assumptions about progress and change in ways that are both “hilarious and haunting’ (Backstage). The performance will be in the CFL Main Hall at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, April 6. Women, Faith and Finance seminar April 12

On Friday, April 12, Luther is hosting the 15th annual Women, Faith and Finance seminar at the Hotel Winneshiek. Women of all ages are invited to come and learn more about financial management, decluttering/simplifying and volunteering time/talent. Cost is $30—bring a friend, and each save $5. Gospel Mime April 14

The Luther College Gospel Mime is a visual representation of the life, death and resurrection of Jesus Christ. The performance with take place at 5 p.m. Palm Sunday, April 14, in the Center for Faith and Life Recital Hall. "Good Morning Miss America!" by Luther Grad Phyllis Yes '63, opens at Hotel Winneshiek Opera House in April. Featuring NYC Actress Kristin Samuelso; Dr. Richard Simon Hanson, professor emeritus; Helen Hustad '52, former Luther Regent of Seattle; and Jim O'Regan, actor. Full-time Program Coordinator to join the music marketing team: Plan, market and manage two-three annual music ensemble tours; Manage details for an annual Dorian festival; Attend music conferences for the music marketing office; and coordinate a variety of music marketing projects and programs as assigned. A four-year college degree is required. Experience with MS Windows and other Microsoft programs, general web design and social media platforms is necessary. Knowledge of and experience with both choral and instrumental music very helpful

Full-time Associate Director of Music Marketing and Tour Manager: Through choral and instrumental ensemble tours, Christmas at Luther, special music events and recordings, the Associate Director of Music Marketing and Tour Manager utilizes the exceptional quality of the Luther College music program to recruit students and garner visibility for the college. Working with faculty and staff partners, the Associate Director develops and implements strategies that align with the college’s overall marketing goals. A four-year college degree is required. Full-time User Experience Librarian for one academic year: This person will be a member of the leadership group within Preus Library and will execute projects focused on user needs relating to library resources and services over a 10-month term of employment. As a primary project, the User Experience Librarian will focus on improving the discovery and use of library resources via the LibGuides platform. Master's degree in library or informtion science from an ALA-accrdited program is required.

ARTICLES, CREATIONS, HONORS

Martin Klammer spoke on "Luther College Study Away Programs in Southern Africa, 1998-2019" at the ELCA Southern African Regional Gathering in Chicago, March 11. He was joined on a panel of faculty from Concordia-Moorhead, Carthage, and Augsburg's Center for Global Education.

Eleven Luther dance students will present three performance works at the American College Dance Association festival, University of Minnesota - Morris, March 20-23. Cory Eull '21, Audrey Farlinger '22, Emmalee Kmoch '19, Keshawn McCain '21, Helen Roets '21, Gracie Rotter '22, Julia Simpson '20, Madeline Skjervold '19, Hannah Slater '22, Haley Steffen '19, and Riley Taylor '22, collaboratively choreographed the performance works with Jane Hawley, Sakchham Karki '21, and Haley Steffen. Steffen will also present, "Western Medicine and Dance: An Integrated Treatment Plan to Better Restore Human Health?"

Tiffany Schmidt Ph.D. '06, received the 2019 Pisart Award for Outstanding Achievements in Vision Science Research.

Cole Jensen '20, of West Des Moines, Iowa spent January Term of 2019 helping customers to familiarize themselves with technology at Shottenkirk Chevrolet in Waukee, Iowa.

James Conway '19, of Mount Horeb, Wisconsin, spent January Term 2019 shadowing at Gundersen Health Clinic in Decorah, Iowa.
