Luther hosts Kemp Memorial Lecture April 25

As part of Luther College's Black Student Union Reunion Weekend, Luther alumna Maxie (Jones) Rockymore '82, is serving as the keynote speaker for the annual Don Kemp Memorial Lecture at 4:30 p.m. Thursday, April 25, in the Shirley Baker Commons. The lecture, held in memoriam of Luther's former social work program director Don Kemp, is open to the public with no charge for admission.

Luther presents Climate Justice Week April 25-May 2

Exploring various climate-related issues through lectures, a water walk and performances, the Luther College presents Climate Justice Week April 25-May 2. The week's events begin with a lecture presented by Jim Martin-Schramm, Luther professor religion and director of the Center for Sustainable Communities, titled "Luther's Path to Carbon Neutrality," at 9:45 a.m. Thursday, April 25, in Peace Dining Room.

James Hansen to present Roslien Distinguished Lecture May 1

In 1988 Dr. James Hansen, then director of the NASA Goddard Institute for Space Studies, testified before Congress and brought the issue of climate change to the public eye. Thirty years later, he continues to raise the public alarm about climate change. Hansen will give Luther's 2019 David J. Roslien Lecture on Science and Leadership at 7 p.m. Wednesday, May 1, in the CFL Main Hall. The lecture, "Shape Your Future: Energy, Climate and Human Rights," is open to the public with no charge for admission. A question and answer session and book signing will follow the lecture.

Mollie B, Squeezebox and the Jim Busta Band

Luther to host second annual Dorian Choral Retreat

The Dorian Choral Retreat, now in its second year, will be hosted this summer at Luther College June 28-30. This event is available to all who are interested and at least 19 years of age. The retreat is ideal for Luther alumni, music educators, church musicians, career musicians and folks who just love singing. The goal of the weekend is to be a musical retreat, a way to recharge batteries, an opportunity to take a break from everyday life and a time to explore Decorah and Luther College.

Assistant Dean for Student Life and Coordinator of New Student Initiatives (0.92 FTE): Reporting to the Associate Dean for Student Life, the assistant dean is an essential position in the life of the college and will lead the ongoing development of new student transition programs, including orientation. The assistant dean will also be a core member of the case management team in the Student Life Office. A master's degree in Student Personnel Administration, Counseling, Higher Education or a related field is preferred. Knowledge of the student development process and bachelor's degree required. Also required is minimum two years experience in Student Affairs or closely related work experience. In addition to strong oral and written communication skills, the ability to speak Spanish is desired.

Call Center Manager and Coordinator for Student Engagement (0.92 FTE): This 11-month per year (August 1 to June 30), entry-level management position plans, directs and coordinates the call center and all components of the student engagement functions of the Development Office. Bachelor's degree required. Must be skilled in working with MS Word, Excel and PowerPoint; video editing software; desktop publishing software; e-communications and marketing and social media platforms.

Costume Shop Supervisor (0.67 FTE): 40 hours per week, September 15- May 15 each year. This person manages, supervises, and carries out the construction, alterations, purchasing and rentals of costumes for each production, including wardrobe and wigs/hair. Duties also include assisting with technical and dress rehearsals. B.A. or B.F.A. in costuming or equivalent experience, as well as knowledge of costume design, costume history, fabrics, millinery and leatherwork required.

Custodial Weekend Lead (1.0 FTE): Supports weekend custodial staff in both academic and residential buildings. This position will work weekends to be custodial support for events as needed and then adjust hours during the week to equal 40 hours. Typical work schedule is Saturdays and Sundays 6 a.m.-6 p.m., Wednesdays through Fridays 1-7 p.m. (weekday hours negotiable). High school diploma or equivalent required.

Registered Nurse (0.75 FTE): Nine-month, 40 hours per week, beginning in August of 2019. Primary responsibilities include: holistic, culturally sensitive patient focused primary nursing care; systematic assessment and triage of health concerns; mental health assessment; provision of care for minor injuries; and collection of laboratory diagnostic data. Qualified applicants will have graduated from an accredited nursing school and have a current license to practice in Iowa. Bachelor of Science degree in Nursing preferred. Associate Degree in nursing accepted. Current CPR certification and strong physical assessment and triage skills required. Five years of experience in various areas of nursing, such as general medical/surgical, public health, and/or clinical practice is preferred.

Security Officer (1.0 FTE): Provides the safety and security of people and property on the Luther campus. Officers perform multiple tasks including random patrol of building and grounds, on foot and by vehicle, to deter and detect criminal activity and other conduct issues with an emphasis on prevention. The primary hours for this position will be the overnight shift, either 9:30 p.m.-7:30 a.m. or 11:30 p.m.-7:30 a.m., or a combination of both. The 24-hour nature of the security operation may require staff to work a variety of hours, however. Scheduled hours will include weekends and holidays. A high school diploma or GED is required; some college is preferred. Must have or obtain CPR and AED training. Applicants must have a valid driver's license with a good driving record and must pass an extensive background check.
