Little Free Pantry

The community is invited to practice giving and receiving generosity through the Little Free Pantry in the CFL Prayer Chapel. Suggested non-perishable food items include: ramen noodles, canned soup, peanut butter, tuna, beans, seasoning, mac n' cheese, instant rice and other microwavable food items. Suggested health and hygiene items include: toothpaste, toilet paper, feminine hygiene products, soap and hair products. Donations can be left in the Little Free Pantry or dropped off at the College Ministries office.

Black Student Union 50th Anniversary

Closing events for the BSU 50th Anniversary will be held Friday-Sunday, April 26-28. The weekend celebration kicks off with a reception at Norby House at 5:30 p.m. Friday, and closes with a Gala Dinner at 5:30 p.m. Saturday. More information on these and additional activities running Thursday through Sunday can be found online. With the exception of the Gala Dinner, the weekend’s events are open to the public with no charge for admission. Tickets for the Gala Dinner are $35, RSVP online. Lecture and Fine Arts proposals

Important upcoming dates for everyone interested in bringing speakers, artists and lecturers onto campus for the 2019-2020 academic year and seeking funds to do so. The Lecture and Fine Arts Committee's review cycle begins this April. The first window for applications began April 15 and closes on April 30. After April 30, the Committee will review all submitted applications, and allocate funds to the most qualified applications by May 15. Applications received after April 30 but before September 1 will be reviewed in early September, and applications received in September will be reviewed in early October. The committee will respond to applicants within three weeks of the respective deadline.

Summer 2019 professional development workshops

All-college summer reading available

Copies of the all-college summer reading for 2019, "The Line Becomes a River: Dispatches from the Border" by Francisco Cantú, are available to faculty and staff without cost. Sponsored by Paideia and the Dean's Office, copies are available in the Book Shop.

Raised by the daughter of a Mexican immigrant, Cantú studied international relations at American University and became obsessed with understanding the borderlands where he grew up. Wanting to experience the realities of the border for himself, Cantú took a job with the U.S. Border Patrol and worked in the deserts of Arizona, New Mexico and Texas from 2008-12. In his memoir, Cantú attempts to understand identity and violence, while discovering a human connection that is stronger than the border itself.

Faculty recognition dinner

The faculty recognition dinner will be held at 5:30 p.m. Thursday, May 16, to honor retiring faculty Linda Martin, Lindy Moeller and Jeannette Pillsbury (and Marian Kaehler, who is unable to attend), and to pay tribute to Storm Bailey and Rebecca Sullivan on 25 years of service. Move out 2019

Move out 2019 is just around the corner and we need your help! Over the past five years, Luther has reduced its overall waste by 56 percent and we're hoping to continue that trend of reduction. The Center for Sustainable Communities has many two hour shifts open for volunteers to assist with loading trucks with donations and diverting items from the landfill. Jazz Orchestra to perform Homecoming Concert April 16

The Luther College Jazz Orchestra will present their homecoming concert at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, April 16, in the CFL Main Hall. This concert is the culmination of the Jazz Orchestra's 2019 Midwest Tour, consisting of stops in Iowa, South Dakota and Minnesota. The program will include a variety of jazz standards, as well as brand new works written by members of the ensemble.

Philharmonia concert April 17

Philharmonia presents their program at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, April 17, in the CFL. The program for this concert includes Mozart's "Overture to Don Giovanni," Debussy's "Petite Suite" and Beethoven's "Ah, Perfido!" for soprano and orchestra, which will be performed with Carla Hanson, soprano.

'Good Morning Miss America!' April 18-27

Decorah's Steyer Opera House is back in the play business. "Good Morning Miss America" by Luther alumna Dr. Phyllis Yes '63, will be performed April 18-27, with five performances over two weekends. Performer, playwright and Luther Development Officer Katie O’Regan turns this poignant show into a hybrid rock melodrama with a DJ element to make it a fun evening for the entire family. The cast features talented New York actress Kristin Samuelson as "Jane;" local Luther legend, renowned author and professor emeritus Dr. Richard Simon Hanson as "Lou;" the beautiful Helen Hustad '52, as "Doris;" and Jim O'Regan as "Sammy." Luther hosts Kemp Memorial Lecture April 25

As part of Luther College's Black Student Union Reunion Weekend, Luther alumna Maxie (Jones) Rockymore '82, is serving as the keynote speaker for the annual Don Kemp Memorial Lecture at 4:30 p.m. Thursday, April 25, in the Shirley Baker Commons. The lecture, held in memoriam of Luther's former social work program director Don Kemp, is open to the public with no charge for admission.

Luther presents Climate Justice Week April 25-May 2

Exploring various climate-related issues through lectures, a water walk and performances, the Luther College presents Climate Justice Week April 25-May 2. The week's events begin with a lecture presented by Jim Martin-Schramm, Luther professor religion and director of the Center for Sustainable Communities, titled "Luther's Path to Carbon Neutrality," at 9:45 a.m. Thursday, April 25, in Peace Dining Room.

James Hansen to present Roslien Distinguished Lecture May 1

In 1988 Dr. James Hansen, then director of the NASA Goddard Institute for Space Studies, testified before Congress and brought the issue of climate change to the public eye. Thirty years later, he continues to raise the public alarm about climate change. Hansen will give Luther's 2019 David J. Roslien Lecture on Science and Leadership at 7 p.m. Wednesday, May 1, in the CFL Main Hall. The lecture, "Shape Your Future: Energy, Climate and Human Rights," is open to the public with no charge for admission. A question and answer session and book signing will follow the lecture.

Mollie B, Squeezebox and the Jim Busta Band

Luther to host second annual Dorian Choral Retreat

The Dorian Choral Retreat, now in its second year, will be hosted this summer at Luther College June 28-30. This event is available to all who are interested and at least 19 years of age. The retreat is ideal for Luther alumni, music educators, church musicians, career musicians and folks who just love singing. The goal of the weekend is to be a musical retreat, a way to recharge batteries, an opportunity to take a break from everyday life and a time to explore Decorah and Luther College.

Position openings

Assistant Dean for Student Life and Coordinator of New Student Initiatives (0.92 FTE): Reporting to the Associate Dean for Student Life, the assistant dean is an essential position in the life of the college and will lead the ongoing development of new student transition programs, including orientation. The assistant dean will also be a core member of the case management team in the Student Life Office. A master's degree in Student Personnel Administration, Counseling, Higher Education or a related field is preferred. Knowledge of the student development process and bachelor's degree required. Also required is minimum two years experience in Student Affairs or closely related work experience. In addition to strong oral and written communication skills, the ability to speak Spanish is desired.

Call Center Manager and Coordinator for Student Engagement (0.92 FTE): This 11-month per year (August 1 to June 30), entry-level management position plans, directs and coordinates the call center and all components of the student engagement functions of the Development Office. Bachelor's degree required. Must be skilled in working with MS Word, Excel and PowerPoint; video editing software; desktop publishing software; e-communications and marketing and social media platforms.

Costume Shop Supervisor (0.67 FTE): 40 hours per week, September 15- May 15 each year. This person manages, supervises, and carries out the construction, alterations, purchasing and rentals of costumes for each production, including wardrobe and wigs/hair. Duties also include assisting with technical and dress rehearsals. B.A. or B.F.A. in costuming or equivalent experience, as well as knowledge of costume design, costume history, fabrics, millinery and leatherwork required.

Custodial Weekend Lead (1.0 FTE): Supports weekend custodial staff in both academic and residential buildings. This position will work weekends to be custodial support for events as needed and then adjust hours during the week to equal 40 hours. Typical work schedule is Saturdays and Sundays 6 a.m.-6 p.m., Wednesdays through Fridays 1-7 p.m. (weekday hours negotiable). High school diploma or equivalent required.

Registered Nurse (0.75 FTE): Nine-month, 40 hours per week, beginning in August of 2019. Primary responsibilities include: holistic, culturally sensitive patient focused primary nursing care; systematic assessment and triage of health concerns; mental health assessment; provision of care for minor injuries; and collection of laboratory diagnostic data. Qualified applicants will have graduated from an accredited nursing school and have a current license to practice in Iowa. Bachelor of Science degree in Nursing preferred. Associate Degree in nursing accepted. Current CPR certification and strong physical assessment and triage skills required. Five years of experience in various areas of nursing, such as general medical/surgical, public health, and/or clinical practice is preferred.

Security Officer (1.0 FTE): Provides the safety and security of people and property on the Luther campus. Officers perform multiple tasks including random patrol of building and grounds, on foot and by vehicle, to deter and detect criminal activity and other conduct issues with an emphasis on prevention. The primary hours for this position will be the overnight shift, either 9:30 p.m.-7:30 a.m. or 11:30 p.m.-7:30 a.m., or a combination of both. The 24-hour nature of the security operation may require staff to work a variety of hours, however. Scheduled hours will include weekends and holidays. A high school diploma or GED is required; some college is preferred. Must have or obtain CPR and AED training. Applicants must have a valid driver's license with a good driving record and must pass an extensive background check.
