As you are likely aware, the United States is experiencing the largest measles outbreak on record since the disease was declared eliminated in the country. There are currently two confirmed cases in Northeast Iowa.
It is always important to keep your vaccinations up to date but when we know the disease is circulating in many states and in our own region, it is especially critical to check with your provider to be sure your vaccinations are current. The best way to prevent measles is to receive the measles-mumps- rubella vaccine (MMR). Two doses of MMR will provide more than 99% of people life long immunity.
If there were to be a case of the measles on campus, the Iowa Department of Public Health would require all unvaccinated students, staff and faculty to be removed from campus for up to 42 days (two incubation periods). This is done for their own protection and to prevent the spread of the measles.
If you have questions or concerns please call Health Service at 387-1045 or 387-1073.
