Guest Lecture: 'Transcending the Human: Technology and the Liberal Arts' May 7

Discussing the impact of technology on culture, Yvonne Förster, a research professor at Shanxi University-Taiyuan, China, and a professor of philosophy at Leuphana University-Lüneburg, Germany, will present the lecture, "Transcending the Human: Technology and the Liberal Arts," at 7 p.m. Tuesday, May 7, in Olin room 102.

Media coverage of LGBT+ issues usually focuses on the struggles of being queer in the modern world rather than the positive aspects of LGBT+ identity and community. Emeriti Colloquium: 'A Boating History of the Mighty Mississippi' May 9

Illustrating boat transportation on the Mississippi throughout America's history Jim Eckblad, professor emeritus of biology, will present the lecture, "A Boating History of the Mighty Mississippi" at Luther's Emeriti Colloquium at 3 p.m. Thursday, May 9, in the Mott Room.

Spring Opera: 'The Tender Land' May 10-11

A coming of age story set in 1930's dustbowl Iowa and featuring kindness and skepticism reminiscent of the Midwest, the Music Department will present Copland's opera "The Tender Land" at 7:30 p.m. Friday, May 10, and Saturday, May 11, in the CFL Main Hall. Tickets for the performance are $15 for adults and $8 for children 18 and under. Olga Rinco Michels was awarded the Ashford Fellowship from the American Chemical Society's Exam Institute to collaborate on organic chemistry pedagogical projects during her 2019-20 sabbatical. Michels has been awarded a fellowship for June 1-December 31, 2019. She is the fourth Ashford Fellow with the institute. 

Todd Green's article on "Islamophobia" was recently published by the Oxford Research Encyclopedia of Religion. It is currently featured on the encyclopedia's home page. Green also gave a presentation on "Islamophobia and the Persistence of Religious Intolerance in the United States and Europe" at Rice University in Houston, TX, on April 26. The presentation was part of a workshop co-sponsored by Rice University's Baker Institute for Public Policy and Boniuk Institute for Religious Tolerance.

Wylie Cook '18, Kristen Haltinner '03, and their student, Julien Arias, University of Idaho, and Char Kunkel participated in a multigenerational panel titled, "Creating Inclusive Classrooms--Bridging the Binary," at the 82nd Annual Meeting of the Midwest Sociological Society in Chicago, April 17. 

On Friday, April 26, the Luther College Sociology program hosted the Iowa Sociological Association's Annual Meeting. Nearly 100 people attended the undergraduate conference from across the state. Paper and poster presentations were held and several awards were given. Arlen Bonson-Anderson '19, won the Stephen Wieting award for best paper that integrates theory with research. His paper is titled, "Racial Attitudes at Luther College: 'Radical Inclusivity' and the Seeds of Antiracist Praxis." Cassie Kiener '19, earned honorable mention for her paper, "An Analysis of the Correlation Between Parental Relationships on Stress Levels and Perceptions of Intimate Relationships" in the Kuhn award for best junior/senior paper. Emily Linder '19, tied for best poster award for her poster titled, "The Tipping Point: Perceptions of Stress in Undergraduate Students." Also presenting were Marta Williams '19, Cora Egherman '19, Lauren Leonard '20, Hannah Nelson '20, and Jess Myers '20.  Several others submitted photo essays, including Devante Martin '19, Emily Marlow '19, and Marta Williams '19.

And finally...

As you may have heard, May is Skin Cancer Awareness Month. We're all excited when the sun is out and it feels like spring. But before you run outside to soak up some rays, do your future self a favor and protect your skin!

Here are some prevention guidelines provided by the Skin Cancer Foundation:

• Seek the shade, especially between 10 AM and 4 PM.
• Don’t get sunburned.
• Avoid tanning, and never use UV tanning beds.
• Cover up with clothing, including a broad-brimmed hat and UV-blocking sunglasses.
• Use a broad spectrum (UVA/UVB) sunscreen with an SPF of 15 or higher every day. For extended outdoor activity, use a water-resistant, broad spectrum (UVA/UVB) sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher.
• Apply 1 ounce (2 tablespoons) of sunscreen to your entire body 30 minutes before going outside. Reapply every two hours or after swimming or excessive sweating.
• Keep newborns out of the sun. Sunscreens should be used on babies over the age of six months.
• Examine your skin head-to-toe every month.
• See a dermatologist at least once a year for a professional skin exam.
