And finally...
Norwegian Constitution Day is an official public holiday observing the anniversary of the signing of Norway's constitution on May 17, 1814. The day is often referred to as syttende mai, translated to "17th of May." This holiday is celebrated in Norway as well as U.S. towns with predominantly Norwegian heritage, including Stoughton, Wisconsin; Spring Grove, Minnesota; and Decorah, Iowa!
Many towns in both Norway and the United States celebrate the day with a traditional Children's Parade. Other festivities typically include singing, dancing and feasting in celebration of Norwegian independence!
Decorah's 2019 Syttende Mai celebration showcases the talent of the Nordic Dancers. Every five years, students in the third grade class are given the opportunity to audition for Nordic Dancers. The dancers perform to traditional Norwegian folk music while dressed in traditional Norwegian bunader.
For more information about Decorah's 2019 celebration of Syttende Mai, visit the Vesterheim Museum and Heritage Center website.
Gratulerer med dagen!
