Position openings

Admissions Counselor (1.0 FTE): Primary responsibilities of the position include coordinating the recruitment of students from specific geographical regions, visiting targeted high schools and attending select college fair programs. Duties will also include interviewing prospective students on campus and assisting with other admissions-related activities/events as assigned. Extensive travel is required, and candidates must be able to work evenings and weekends when appropriate. A bachelor's degree in any discipline is required. Applicants must have strong communication and relationship-building skills. One-year relevant post-graduate experience and experience in sales, marketing, communication and education preferred. A valid driver's license is required.

Campus Mover (1.0 FTE): This staff position is responsible for all types of moving-related jobs to support the various events on campus. From moving tables and chairs, musical instruments and freight; to making runs to hospital with lab specimens; to setting up residence hall rooms for summer and back for the school year. High school diploma or equivalent required. Also required are computer skills to access the college's web-based work order system and email, ability to follow and give directions, valid driver's license and good driving record. This physical position will require lifting, mobility, and dexterity.

Front-End Web Developer (1.0 FTE): Responsible for the coding, usability and layout of the Luther College website. A bachelor's degree in a related field is required along with 3-5 years of front-end developing experience.

Student Employment Coordinator in the Financial Aid Office (1.0 FTE): The coordinator will be responsible for developing and enhancing student work positions as well as coordinating on-campus and off-campus employment according to federal regulations and established college policies. High school diploma or equivalent required. Bachelor’s degree is preferred. Also required is a minimum of three years administrative or program management experience and thorough knowledge of Microsoft Office, specifically Excel.

Robert Shedinger's new book, "The Mystery of Evolutionary Mechanisms: Darwinian Biology's Grand Narrative of Triumph and the Subversion of Religion," has been published by Wipf and Stock publishers.

Amy Weldon presented a paper titled, "An Awful Rainbow: Teaching the Romantics in a World on Fire" at the Association for the Study of Literature and Environment (ASLE) Conference in Davis, California in June. Her novel, "ELDORADO, IOWA," is now available at Dragonfly Books and the Luther College Bookshop.

Andy Hageman published his essay "Infrastuctural Futures in Chinese Science Fiction" in the journal Alluvium.

We opted to not have a furnace and water tanks installed to keep weight down and have found that 2.5 or 5 gallon water jugs are plenty adequate for simple cooking and cleanup. EDITORIAL COMMENT

And finally...

50 years ago today, America launched Apollo 11 into space in the first mission to land on the moon. Neil Armstrong, Edwin "Buzz" Aldrin and Michael Collins boarded their spacecraft the morning of July 16, 1969 and set off into the unknown. Four days later, Armstrong and Aldrin would walk on the moon, making "one giant leap for mankind."

Did you know when the sun is out, the temperature can reach 260 degrees Fahrenheit on the moon? When the sun goes down, temperatures can dip to 280 degrees below zero. Daytime on one side of the moon lasts about 13 and a half days, followed by 13 and a half nights of darkness.
