Please attend the Service of Dedication ceremony
Faculty, staff, emeriti and guests are invited to attend the annual Service of Dedication at 3:30 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 23, in the Center for Faith and Life Main Hall. President Carlson will deliver her State of the College address and new faculty and staff will be introduced. Offices are allowed to close for the Service of Dedication so as many employees as possible can attend. A reception will follow in Bentdahl Commons.
Presidential search update

COLLEGE OPERATIONS
Volunteers needed for internal communications focus groups
Given the significance of the decisions being made about the college's future and the need to employ effective change management while improving staff engagement, an internal communications strategy is not only necessary, it's essential. There will be six focus groups with 6-8 participants per group on Friday, Aug. 17, to test preferences, including format, frequency and vehicles for internal communications. Those who are available Friday, Aug. 17, and interested in participating in one of the focus groups, please complete this form to be included in the participant pool.
Luther College receives $27,000 grant to purchase surveying equipment
Only approximately 50 of the nearly 400 effigy mounds remain in the state of Iowa. The mounds tell the story of Iowa's prehistoric past, serving both as a visible reminder of the past as well as standing as a symbol of Iowa's heritage. Thanks to a grant by the Iowa Department of Cultural Affairs, the Luther anthropology program is working to further document and conserve some of the remaining Effigy Mounds in Northeast Iowa.
Next steps for sophomores steering committee
As indicated in the list of year one priority activities for the Strategic Plan, the Next Steps for Sophomores initiative will be expanded to reach all students in their sophomore year. Dean Kraus appointed a steering committee to guide Next Steps for Sophomores activities in the 2018-19 academic year. Committee membership includes Andrew Bailey, Rachel Brummel, Storm Bailey, Destiny Crider, Anne Edison-Albright, Erin Flater, Nan Hibbs, Emily Neal and Jeff Wilkerson. Thank you to these individuals for their willingness to cultivate student reflection in the sophomore year that strengthens self-understanding and enhances vocational discovery.
Team Drives
Google's Team Drives, enabled earlier this year, allows departments to collectively own content in Google Drive, rather than specific individuals. This solves issues around file ownership when people join or leave a department. When someone new starts, just add them to the Team Drive. When someone leaves, remove them from the Team Drive. Preus Library and Winneshiek County Historical Society awarded $30,000 grant
Thanks to a grant from the Iowa Department of Cultural Affairs, Luther's Preus Library and the Winneshiek County Historical Society will make county newspapers more accessible to the public. The entities were jointly awarded $30,016 to fund the digitization of Winneshiek County newspapers dating back more than 150 years. The Winneshiek County Historical Society will augment the grant award with a $10,000 cash contribution to fully fund the digitization efforts.
Luther achieves 50 percent reduction of waste during move out week
Move out week at Luther was another success this year, with a 56 percent reduction of waste from the 2013 baseline. Luther students reduced their waste by five more tons than move out week 2017, achieving the goal of a 50 percent reduction by 2018 for move out waste diversion.
HR update
Regular work hours resume Monday, Aug. 20. Hours are 8 a.m.-5 p.m., with hour-long lunches. The college is open normal hours and classes are in session on Labor Day, Sept. 3.

Sophomores on the Commons - sophomore orientation event
Faculty, staff and students are encouraged to join sophomore students for a program celebrating the completion of the first year of college and highlighting the opportunities available to Luther sophomores at 4:15 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 30, in the CFL. Student, faculty and alumni speakers will reflect on the advice they would go back and give to their sophomore selves to kick off a year of reflection and planning for sophomore students. Following the program, all sophomore students will attend a dinner outside on Bentdahl Commons and engage in reflective conversation with faculty volunteers.

Position opening
Associate athletic trainer: This is a .83 FTE position. The trainer will assist the head athletic trainer with the responsibilities of managing the athletic training services with the understanding of current NCAA and NATA policies and procedures. This position also includes teaching nutrition classes. Master's degree required, two years of collegiate experience and prior teaching experience preferred. BOC certification required. Successful candidate must possess or be in the process of acquiring an Iowa Athletic Training Licensure.

Is there more to cafeteria and food services workers quitting than just not wanting to work in the food industry for a living? Jacob Wessels '19, is examining the reasons behind turnover of food service workers for his summer research project and will use the information he gathers to help the college's cafeteria student work retention rates. Wessels is working with Justin Sprung on his project "Analysis of Turnover Intentions Among Food Service Employees."
Dogs have the ability to communicate with human beings through everyday interactions and bonds. With his summer research project, Jacob Noble '19, is studying the extent to which certain interactions affect canine-human relations. Noble is working with Kristy Gould on his project, "The impact of encouragement and familiarity on pet dogs during an unsolvable task." Other contributors include Jennifer Templeton, Knox professor of biology, and one of her research students.
According to research by Catelyn Janda '19, a community music school would benefit not only local musicians but also Luther music education students looking to get more hands-on experience. The Batavia, Illinois, native is spending her summer exploring the creation of a Luther College Community Music School. Janda is working with Jill Wilson on her project, "Luther College Community Music School."
Luther is joining the push to mitigate one of the most critical public health crises facing the world, according to the World Health Organization and Center for Disease Control and Prevention: antibiotic resistance via development of a new research-based lab course by Jodi Enos-Berlage and a summer research collaboration between Enos-Berlage and Martel Den Hartog '19.
Loren Toussaint recently wrote a blog for the breast cancer website imtakingcharge.com. The blog discusses the importance of forgiveness in the context of cancer and how it can serve as a helpful coping strategy during difficult times. The blog reviews research Toussaint and his student research team and colleagues conducted at Cancer Treatment Centers of America. Additional recommended resources and reading are also provided.
Thirty-seven seniors were inducted into the Luther chapter of the Phi Beta Kappa national academic honor society at a ceremony held this spring in the Center for Faith and Life.
