Luther brand workshops for faculty and staff Sept. 13
All faculty and staff are invited to attend one of two Luther brand work sessions Thursday, Sept. 13, with the firms that are leading Luther's brand strategy development. Sessions are 9:40-10:50 a.m. and 1-2:30 p.m., both in the Center for Faith and Life Recital Hall. No sign-up is necessary. Contact Aimee Viniard-Weideman, <aimeevw>, with questions.
Presidential search listening sessions Sept. 13-14
As the presidential search process is launched, members of the presidential search committee want to hear thoughts about the college's strengths, the leadership agenda for the new president, and the skill sets, experiences and attributes that would best serve the college in its next chapter.
Members of the presidential search committee, together with the search firm, Storbeck/Pimentel & Associates, are holding participant-focused listening sessions. In addition, there will be an open forum for faculty and staff who are not able to attend one of the other listening sessions. Please register for a session based on your role with the college.

HLC accreditation evaluation–opportunity to comment
Luther College is seeking comments from the public about the college in preparation for its periodic evaluation by its regional accrediting agency. Luther College will have its next reaffirmation visit March 11, 2019, with a team representing the Higher Learning Commission. Luther College has been accredited by HLC since 1915. The team will review the institution's ongoing ability to meet HLC's Criteria for Accreditation.
The public is invited to submit comments that address substantive matters related to the quality of the institution or its academic programs. Comments may be submitted to the following address:

Gilbertson, Muggli named Nottingham program directors
The Dean's Office and the Center for Global Learning are pleased to announce the appointment of Carol Gilbertson and Mark Muggli as the fall 2018 Nottingham Program Directors. We are grateful to both faculty members for providing leadership to this important and longstanding off-campus program. Marian Kaehler, who was previously named a director, is on a leave of absence due to a family emergency.
Change in plastic film recycling
Due to policy changes at the Winneshiek County Recycling, Luther will no longer be collecting plastic film for recycling. The Center for Sustainable Communities thanks you for your participation in this program and hopes the Luther community continues to reduce their plastic film usage.
Reminder from the Mail Center
The Mail Center reminds all faculty and staff to include buildings and/or departments in the addresses when shipping items to Luther College. Chair massages start Sept. 17
Wellness is hosting a massage therapist on campus for $20, 15-minute chair massages, paid by cash, check or card at appointment, from 1-5 p.m. every other Monday, starting Sept. 17 in Qualley Lounge in the CFL. Chair massages can help reduce muscle tension, improve blood flow/circulation, increase energy-improving productivity, decrease anxiety and enhance immune system function. Reserve a spot soon as they fill up fast!

'Odysseus and His Women,' lecture Sept. 4
Join the Center for Ethics and Public Engagement in an ongoing conversation about this year's summer read, "The Odyssey." Long-time educator and classics instructor Peter Dodington will present "Odysseus and His Women," at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 4, in Olin 214. He will discuss Odysseus' relationship with the women in his life, asking the questions: "Does he achieve the 'like-minded harmony' he seeks?" International Studies open house Sept. 6
Join the International Studies Department for an open house 9:45-10:45 a.m. Thursday, Sept. 6, in the Center for Global Learning in Larsen Hall. Norse Athletic Association Fall Sports Luncheon Sept. 6
The Norse Athletic Association invites the community to the NAA Fall Sports Luncheon at noon Thursday, Sept. 6, in Peace Dining Room on the second floor of Dahl Centennial Union. Cost is $5 per person. A great chance to get firsthand information on Norse athletics, the luncheon features all of the fall sport coaches speaking on their respective seasons to date. SAC welcomes Neil Hilborn Sept. 7
National Poetry Slam Champion Neil Hilborn will bring his talents to the stage 7:30 p.m. Friday, Sept. 7, at Marty's Café in the lowest level of Dahl Centennial Union on the Luther College campus. Hilborn is best known for his viral poem "OCD," which has been viewed on YouTube more than 14 million times and is to date the most-watched slam poem online.
CSS: PUSH Sept. 8
Center Stage Series presents PUSH [physical theatre] at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 8, in the CFL Main Hall. PUSH performers express what it means to be human using gravity-defying acrobatics, intense athleticism and soulful artistry that broaden the definition of both dance and theatre. College Night is Sept. 10
Northeast Iowa and southeast Minnesota high school students and their parents will have an opportunity to talk with representatives from nearly 60 higher education institutions Monday, Sept. 10, at Luther. Representatives of private colleges, public and private universities, community colleges, vocational schools and branches of the military will have booths at the College Night event.
Peace Scholar program Sept. 11
Faculty and staff are asked to encourage sophomores and juniors interested in applying to the Peace Scholar program to hear 2018 Peace Scholar Rebecka Green and Steinar Bryn of the Nansen Center discuss their experiences during shadow block Tuesday, Sept. 11, in Olin 214. The Peace Scholar program funds two Luther students to spend six weeks at the Nansen Center for Peace and Dialogue in Lillehammer and the University of Oslo Summer School each year.
Not Quite Free Lunch begins Sept. 11
The first Not Quite Free Lunch of the year is 11:30 a.m.-1:15 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 11, in the Nobel Room, sponsored by Wellness. Boost social and emotional wellness by getting away from the typical work space and mingling with folks from across campus. The charge is $5, payable by cash, check or Luther ID. Grant writing workshop Sept. 11
Luther and Iowa State University Extension and Outreach in Winneshiek County are hosting a grant writing 101 workshop 5:30-8:30 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 11, in Valders 262. Participants will receive hands-on training on seeking and writing successful grants for non-profits, local government and schools. Participants are asked to bring a laptop, iPad or other tablet. 'A Conversation about Autism' Sept. 11
For the past 15 years, Vesna Bryn has served as the chief attending physician at the Department of Pediatric Rehabilitation in the Innlandet Hospital Trust, Lillehammer, Norway. A pediatrician with a focus on neonatology, Bryn is currently engaged in research on the causes of autism, particularly the relationship between immune system responses and autism. She invites anyone interested in this topic to take part in a conversation about autism 7 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 11, in the Hovde Room, Preus Library. Refreshments will be provided. 'Monarchs in a Changing World,' Sept. 13
Karen Oberhauser, director of the University of Wisconsin-Madison Arboretum and professor of entomology at the UWM, will present a talk titled "Monarchs in a Changing World: Conservation of an Iconic Insect," at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 13, in Valders 206. Oberhauser's talk focuses on the status of the monarch butterfly. The monarch is currently under review by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service for possible listing as an endangered or threatened species.

Thomas C. Johnson was nominated by the Iowa Arts Council and Produce Iowa to participate in Creative Capital Core Weekend Workshop, a nationally recognized professional development program for artists recently held in Des Moines, Iowa.
In July, Kate Narveson gave the third of three invited conference presentations, this one in Lausanne, Switzerland, at the 32nd annual conference of the international John Donne Society. She spoke on early modern musical settings of the poem "Go and Catch a Falling Star," performing the settings on treble viol. The earlier presentations were at the Renaissance Society of America conference on 17th-Century women's performance of religion and at the 16th-Century studies conference on new approaches to the religious lyric.
Todd Green's most recent book, "Presumed Guilty: Why We Shouldn't Ask Muslims to Condemn Terrorism," was published by Fortress Press Sept. 1. The book is now available for purchase in the Luther Book Shop. Green will give a public lecture on the book 7 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 20, in Olin 102.
Kim Powell's essay "Framing Islam/Creating Fear: An Analysis of U.S. Media Coverage of Terrorism from 2011-2016" appears in Religions 2018 Volume 9, Issue 9—a special issue devoted to media coverage of Islam and Muslims. This project was the result of a Luther student/faculty collaborative research grant with Liz Stay '17.
Andy Hageman had an interview with musical artist Lissie on her experiences with "Twin Peaks," insights into the origins and forces of creativity, and homemade pie on 25 Years Later.
