Luther brand workshops for faculty and staff Sept. 13
All faculty and staff are invited to attend one of two Luther brand work sessions Thursday, Sept. 13, with the firms that are leading Luther's brand strategy development. Sessions are 9:40-10:50 a.m. and 1-2:30 p.m., both in the Center for Faith and Life Recital Hall. No sign-up is necessary. Contact Aimee Viniard-Weideman, <aimeevw>, with questions.

Presidential search listening sessions Sept. 13-14

As the presidential search process is launched, members of the presidential search committee want to hear thoughts about the college's strengths, the leadership agenda for the new president, and the skill sets, experiences and attributes that would best serve the college in its next chapter.

Members of the presidential search committee, together with the search firm, Storbeck/Pimentel & Associates, are holding participant-focused listening sessions. In addition, there will be an open forum for faculty and staff who are not able to attend one of the other listening sessions. Please register for a session based on your role with the college.

HLC accreditation evaluation–opportunity to comment

Luther College is seeking comments from the public about the college in preparation for its periodic evaluation by its regional accrediting agency. Luther College will have its next reaffirmation visit March 11, 2019, with a team representing the Higher Learning Commission. Luther College has been accredited by HLC since 1915. The team will review the institution's ongoing ability to meet HLC's Criteria for Accreditation.

The public is invited to submit comments that address substantive matters related to the quality of the institution or its academic programs. Comments may be submitted to the following address:

TIAA is holding an on-campus workshop, "The Starting Line: Beginning to Save for Retirement," 9-10 a.m. Wednesday, Sept. 26, in the CFL Recital Hall. NEDA Walk on campus Oct. 20

Luther is holding its first National Eating Disorders Association Walk on campus Saturday, Sept. 20. This walk is designed to create a safe and supportive space where no one will feel alone in their battle. All are welcome. Sign up online. Walkers raise money to fund education about eating disorders, prevention and support, as well as advocacy and research initiatives. Habitat for Humanity pancake breakfast Sept. 22

The Luther College Chapter of Habitat for Humanity is hosting a pancake breakfast fundraiser from 8 a.m. to noon at St. Benedict Parish Hall, 307 W. Main St, Decorah. Proceeds will go toward the Habitat spring break service trip and Winneshiek County Habitat for Humanity. Tickets are $7 for adults and $5 for children 5-12. Blood drive is Sept. 24-25

Luther is hosting a blood drive in the east court of the Main Gym in the Regents Center 9 a.m.-3 p.m. Monday and Tuesday, Sept. 24 and 25. Members of the sponsoring organization, Alpha Phi Omega, will hold signups downstairs in the Union by Marty's 11 a.m.-1 p.m. and 5-7 p.m. Thursday-Friday, Sept. 13-14 and Monday-Wednesday, Sept. 17-19.

Gilbertson, Muggli named Nottingham program directors

The Dean's Office and the Center for Global Learning are pleased to announce the appointment of Carol Gilbertson and Mark Muggli as the fall 2018 Nottingham program directors. The Dean's Office and Global Learning are grateful to both faculty members for providing leadership to this important and longstanding off-campus program. Marian Kaehler, who was previously named a director, is on a leave of absence due to a family emergency. 

Change in plastic film recycling

Due to policy changes at the Winneshiek County Recycling, Luther will no longer be collecting plastic film for recycling. Plastic film is plastic that's less than 10 millimeters thick. The Center for Sustainable Communities thanks you for your participation in this program and hopes the Luther community continues to reduce their plastic film usage.

Reminder from the Mail Center

The Mail Center reminds all faculty and staff to include buildings and/or departments in the addresses when shipping items to Luther College. Please contact vendors to make any changes to "ship to" addresses if possible. Including that key information will help with sorting the mail quickly and efficiently. Chair massages start Sept. 17

Wellness is hosting a massage therapist on campus for $20, 15-minute chair massages, paid by cash, check or card at appointment, from 1-5 p.m. every other Monday, starting Sept. 17 in Qualley Lounge in the CFL. Chair massages can help reduce muscle tension, improve blood flow/circulation, increase energy-improving productivity, decrease anxiety and enhance immune system function. Reserve a spot soon as they fill up fast!

Prepare for fall book groups

Prepare for Jonathan Haidt's visit in October by reading his latest book, "The Coddling of the American Mind: How Good Intentions and Bad Ideas are Setting Up a Generation for Failure." Also find Michael Pollan's latest book and others. Faculty, staff, students and community members can learn more and sign up here for discussions to start soon. Books are provided. Peace Scholar program Sept. 11

Faculty and staff are asked to encourage sophomores and juniors interested in applying to the Peace Scholar program to hear 2018 Peace Scholar Rebecka Green and Steinar Bryn of the Nansen Center discuss their experiences during shadow block Tuesday, Sept. 11, in Olin 214. The Peace Scholar program funds two Luther students to spend six weeks at the Nansen Center for Peace and Dialogue in Lillehammer and the University of Oslo Summer School each year.

Not Quite Free Lunch begins Sept. 11

The first Not Quite Free Lunch of the year is 11:30 a.m.-1:15 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 11, in the Nobel Room, sponsored by Wellness. Boost social and emotional wellness by getting away from the typical work space and mingling with folks from across campus. The charge is $5, payable by cash, check or Luther ID. Grant writing workshop Sept. 11

Luther and Iowa State University Extension and Outreach in Winneshiek County are hosting a grant writing 101 workshop 5:30-8:30 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 11, in Valders 262. Participants will receive hands-on training on seeking and writing successful grants for non-profits, local government and schools. Participants are asked to bring a laptop, iPad or other tablet. 'A Conversation about Autism' Sept. 11

For the past 15 years, Vesna Bryn has served as the chief attending physician at the Department of Pediatric Rehabilitation in the Innlandet Hospital Trust, Lillehammer, Norway. A pediatrician with a focus on neonatology, Bryn is currently engaged in research on the causes of autism, particularly the relationship between immune system responses and autism. She invites anyone interested in this topic to take part in a conversation about autism 7 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 11, in the Hovde Room, Preus Library. Refreshments will be provided. ''Anonymous:' Responsibility and Ethics in Government' pop-up program Sept. 12

Last week, the New York Times published an anonymous Op Ed by someone claiming to be high up in the presidential administration, criticizing the president and claiming the existence of an underground "resistance" within the government. Is it ethical to make such claims anonymously? What other choices did this person have? Join Mike Engelhardt and the Center for Ethics and Public Engagement for a discussion on the ethics of governmental whistle-blowing and opposition 4-5 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 12, in Olin 102.

The Public Leadership Education Network is a national organization focused on preparing college women for leadership in public policy. 'Monarchs in a Changing World,' Sept. 13

Karen Oberhauser, director of the University of Wisconsin-Madison Arboretum and professor of entomology at UWM, will present a talk titled "Monarchs in a Changing World: Conservation of an Iconic Insect" at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 13, in Valders 206. Oberhauser's talk focuses on the status of the monarch butterfly. The monarch is currently under review by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service for possible listing as an endangered or threatened species.

'The Seventeen Songs of Henri Duparc' Sept. 13

The Luther Music Department is proud to present "The Seventeen Songs of Henri Duparc" 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 13, in Noble Recital Hall, Jenson-Noble Hall of Music. FAS: 'A Night at the Opera' Sept. 16

Amy Engelsdorfer, with collaborative pianist and fellow Luther faculty Nicholas Shaneyfelt, is presenting a flute and piano recital, A Night at the Opera: Fantasies and Variations, at 7 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 16, in the Noble Recital Hall. 'Presumed Guilty' religion forum Sept. 20

Asking Muslims to condemn terrorist acts can lead to racist scapegoating, an act which prevents majority populations in the West from coming to terms with their own violent past and their ongoing complicity in a violent world order, according to Todd Green. Green will present "Presumed Guilty: Why We Shouldn't Ask Muslims to Condemn Terrorism" at 7 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 20, Olin 102. The lecture is open to the public with no charge for admission, and a book signing will follow.

Anthropology and Museum Studies Visit Day Sept. 21

Luther is hosting an Anthropology and Museum Studies Visit Day from 9:30 a.m.-3:30 p.m. Friday, Sept. 21. Prospective students will be given the opportunity to have conversations with anthropology and museum studies faculty and students about academics, research and study abroad opportunities.

CSS: Cristina Pato Sept. 21

Center Stage Series presents Cristina Pato Quartet: Latina 7:30 p.m. Friday, Sept. 21, in the CFL Main Hall. Spanish bagpiper Cristina Pato uses the traditionally Celtic instrument to deliver a rich, intense repertoire. 'The 'S' Word' Sept. 25

Suicide attempt survivor Dese'Rae Stage seeks out other attempt survivors in order to give insight to the other side of a suicide attempt and begin a conversation about suicide attempts and loss in the documentary "The 'S' Word." Sponsored by Luther College Active Minds and Counseling Service, Social Work Department, and Center for Intercultural Engagement and Student Success, the screening and discussion of the film is 7-8:30 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 25, in Valders 206. Both the screening and discussion are open to the public with no charge for admission.

ARTICLES, CREATIONS, HONORS

Anna M. Peterson, assistant professor of history, has been named the Norwegian-American Historical Association's new editor. For the past decade Peterson has been an active scholar in the field of Norwegian-American history. She will hold the two roles concurrently.

Four Luther faculty were named to endowed positions at the college's Opening Convocation Thursday, Aug. 30. Maren Johnson was named the director of Luther's new Richard L. and Judith A. Torgerson Center for Nordic Studies; Steve Holland was named the Bert M. and Mildred O. Dahl Chair in Economics; Anna Peterson was granted the Nena Amundson Distinguished Professorship; and David Thompson was granted the Dennis M. Jones Distinguished Teaching Professorship in the Humanities. 

Loren Toussaint was an invited guest for "The Breast Podcast" a weekly podcast sharing helpful information for individuals affected by breast cancer and other cancers. He discusses how forgiveness can be helpful when coping with chronic illnesses and diseases like cancer.

Nathan Ersig '98, director of development and co-director of campaigns, and Mike Russell, Luther's customer success manager for Reeher, were co-authors on a presentation at the annual Reeher Vista Executive Conference in Minneapolis titled "Purposeful. Planned. Proficient: Using Proposals to Achieve High Performance."

Amy Weldon's first author website, created by Tabita Green and Nathan Dirks of Decorah's New Digital, is now live at https://amyeweldon.com/.

A new water quality research project investigating water-borne disease-causing agents in Winneshiek County is underway. Eric Baack and Jodi Enos-Berlage were recently awarded a $39,938 grant from the Iowa Center for Health Effects of Environmental Contaminants that will allow them to quantify levels of harmful bacteria and viruses in both ground and surface waters. Luther is the first small college to receive this grant in CHEEC's 30-year history.

Kristen Carlson '17, was selected for a 2018-19 Fulbright U.S. Student Award to Latvia from the U.S. Department of State and the J. William Fulbright Foreign Scholarship Board. Carlson will support the teaching of English at Jāzeps Vītols Latvian Music Academy and Riga Teika Secondary School in Riga, Latvia, as part of a Fulbright English Teaching Assistantship.
