Built into the class schedule and rhythm of life at Luther, chapel is a time for the community to gather for song, reflection and fellowship at 10:30 a.m. Monday, Wednesday and Friday in the CFL Main Hall. Faculty, staff, students and guests serve as speakers, musicians and artists.

Peace Scholar program Sept. 11

Faculty and staff are asked to encourage sophomores and juniors interested in applying to the Peace Scholar program to hear 2018 Peace Scholar Rebecka Green and Steinar Bryn of the Nansen Center discuss their experiences during shadow block Tuesday, Sept. 11, in Olin 214. The Peace Scholar program funds two Luther students to spend six weeks at the Nansen Center for Peace and Dialogue in Lillehammer and the University of Oslo Summer School each year.

Not Quite Free Lunch begins Sept. 11

The first Not Quite Free Lunch of the year is 11:30 a.m.-1:15 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 11, in the Nobel Room, sponsored by Wellness. Boost social and emotional wellness by getting away from the typical work space and mingling with folks from across campus. The charge is $5, payable by cash, check or Luther ID. Grant writing workshop Sept. 11

Luther and Iowa State University Extension and Outreach in Winneshiek County are hosting a grant writing 101 workshop 5:30-8:30 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 11, in Valders 262. Participants will receive hands-on training on seeking and writing successful grants for non-profits, local government and schools. Participants are asked to bring a laptop, iPad or other tablet. 'A Conversation about Autism' Sept. 11

For the past 15 years, Vesna Bryn has served as the chief attending physician at the Department of Pediatric Rehabilitation in the Innlandet Hospital Trust, Lillehammer, Norway. A pediatrician with a focus on neonatology, Bryn is currently engaged in research on the causes of autism, particularly the relationship between immune system responses and autism. She invites anyone interested in this topic to take part in a conversation about autism 7 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 11, in the Hovde Room, Preus Library. Refreshments will be provided. ''Anonymous:' Responsibility and Ethics in Government' pop-up program Sept. 12

Last week, the New York Times published an anonymous Op Ed by someone claiming to be high up in the presidential administration, criticizing the president and claiming the existence of an underground "resistance" within the government. Is it ethical to make such claims anonymously? What other choices did this person have? Join Mike Engelhardt and the Center for Ethics and Public Engagement for a discussion on the ethics of governmental whistle-blowing and opposition 4-5 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 12, in Olin 102.

PLEN info session Sept. 13

The Public Leadership Education Network is a national organization focused on preparing college women for leadership in public policy. College females interested in health, law, STEM or global policy should come hear more about the short seminars the PLEN holds in Washington, D.C. 'Monarchs in a Changing World,' Sept. 13

Karen Oberhauser, director of the University of Wisconsin-Madison Arboretum and professor of entomology at UWM, will present a talk titled "Monarchs in a Changing World: Conservation of an Iconic Insect" at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 13, in Valders 206. Oberhauser's talk focuses on the status of the monarch butterfly. The monarch is currently under review by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service for possible listing as an endangered or threatened species.

'The Seventeen Songs of Henri Duparc' Sept. 13

The Luther Music Department is proud to present "The Seventeen Songs of Henri Duparc" 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 13, in Noble Recital Hall, Jenson-Noble Hall of Music. It is presented by the Luther voice faculty with Nicholas Shaneyfelt collaborating on piano. The evening includes song and poetry featuring the complete songs of Henri Duparc.

SAC Cinema presents 'Ocean's 8' Sept. 14

"Ocean's 8" is the featured film 7:30 p.m. Friday, Sept. 14, in Valders 206, sponsored by SAC Cinema. Doors open at 7 p.m. Debbie, Danny Ocean's estranged sister, takes over the family business with an attempt to pull off a heist at New York City's Met Gala. Helping her is an all-female crew. FAS: 'A Night at the Opera' Sept. 16

Amy Engelsdorfer, with collaborative pianist and fellow Luther faculty Nicholas Shaneyfelt, is presenting a flute and piano recital, A Night at the Opera: Fantasies and Variations, at 7 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 16, in the Noble Recital Hall. Each of the works chosen for the program are based on well-known operas.

'Presumed Guilty' religion forum Sept. 20

Asking Muslims to condemn terrorist acts can lead to racist scapegoating, an act which prevents majority populations in the West from coming to terms with their own violent past and their ongoing complicity in a violent world order, according to Todd Green. Green will present "Presumed Guilty: Why We Shouldn't Ask Muslims to Condemn Terrorism" at 7 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 20, Olin 102. The lecture is open to the public with no charge for admission, and a book signing will follow.

Anthropology and Museum Studies Visit Day Sept. 21

CSS: Cristina Pato Sept. 21

Center Stage Series presents Cristina Pato Quartet: Latina 7:30 p.m. Friday, Sept. 21, in the CFL Main Hall. Spanish bagpiper Cristina Pato uses the traditionally Celtic instrument to deliver a rich, intense repertoire. 'The 'S' Word' Sept. 25

Suicide attempt survivor Dese'Rae Stage seeks out other attempt survivors in order to give insight to the other side of a suicide attempt and begin a conversation about suicide attempts and loss in the documentary "The 'S' Word." Sponsored by Luther College Active Minds and Counseling Service, Social Work Department, and Center for Intercultural Engagement and Student Success, the screening and discussion of the film is 7-8:30 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 25, in Valders 206. Both the screening and discussion are open to the public with no charge for admission.
