Impact of Giving Annual Report

This report highlights the impact of the generous support of our alumni, parents, faculty, staff and friends of Luther, and represents activity during our fiscal year, June 1-May 31. 2018 fall semester enrollment
- Student enrollment is 2,005.
- Our new registered student total is 572 (554 first-year students, 18 transfer students).
- U.S. students of color total 236 (11.8% of total enrollment), and international students total 177 (8.8% of total enrollment).
- First generation student enrollment is 451 (22.5% of total enrollment).
- Thirty-nine states (includes Iowa) and 74 countries (includes U.S.) are represented in our total enrollment.
- Student enrollment Full-Time Equivalent (FTE) using the Common Data Set definition (full-time + 1/3 part-time), used for between institution comparison, is 1,986.
- Thirty-eight percent of our total enrollment report Lutheran as their religious affiliation.
- First-year to second-year persistence for the 2017 first-year student cohort is 84.3%, first-year to third-year persistence for the 2016 first-year student cohort is 78.1%, and first-year to fourth-year persistence for the 2015 first-year cohort is 75.1%.
- Our most recent four-year graduation rate (2014 first-year student cohort graduating by Aug. 31, 2018) is 69.2%.
- Our most recent five-year graduation rate (2013 first-year student cohort graduating by Aug. 31, 2018) is 74.8%.
- Our most recent six-year graduation rate (2012 first-year student cohort graduating by Aug. 31, 2018) is 79.3%.

Review directory information
Preparation for the print version of the 2018-19 Luther College faculty-staff directory has begun. Faculty and staff should review their current information in the online directory https://www2.luther.edu/directory/ and report any changes to title, office address, office phone number or Luther email to HR, <hr>. Faculty and staff whose photo is more than five years old should come in Wednesday, Sept. 19, to the visual media office, Dahl 213, to have a new one taken.
Constitution Day today
Stop by the Union lobby 8-9:30 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 18, to celebrate Constitution Day with Carly Hayden Foster's Constitutional Law class. Students will share Constitution-themed games, presentations and demonstrations.

TIAA counseling sessions

TIAA on-campus
TIAA is holding an on-campus workshop, "The Starting Line: Beginning to Save for Retirement," 9-10 a.m. Wednesday, Sept. 26, in the CFL Recital Hall. Smart steps in the beginning of a career can help lead to a more solid financial future. TIAA's workshop leader will show financial tools and offer practical insight so attendees can learn the real effect of time on money and how to evaluate/manage debt. Book Shop news
The Luther College Book Shop is hosting a book fair in Valders 8 a.m.-4 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 29, for the Luther College Writers Festival. The Book Shop will be open 10:30 a.m.-3 p.m. for the festival. Stop in the Book Shop today to pick up copies of some favorite authors coming to the festival as they will be signing purchased books throughout the event.
LFA proposals due Oct. 1
The Lecture and Fine Arts Committee would like to remind everyone that final proposals for funding of speakers, musicians and artists are due by Monday, Oct. 1.
Want to help promote health and wellness on campus?
Passionate about the health and wellness of the campus community, or know someone who is? Wellness is looking for faculty and staff to join the Central Wellness Committee. Meetings are held once a month at 4 p.m. on Mondays. Email <wellness> with nominations or self-nominations.
Student success workshops
Luther's office of Institutional Equity and Inclusion and Catalyze Program are sponsoring student success workshops this fall. Workshops are in Mott/Borlaug from 5-6:30 p.m., unless noted, and include pizza and refreshments. Workshops offered: test taking/note taking Sept. 18; critical thinking Sept. 25; memory building 5:30-7 p.m Oct. 2; money management Oct. 9; and time management Oct. 23. NEDA Walk on campus Oct. 20
Luther is holding its first National Eating Disorders Association Walk on campus Saturday, Oct. 20. This walk is designed to create a safe and supportive space where no one will feel alone in their battle. All are welcome. Sign up online. Walkers raise money to fund education about eating disorders, prevention and support, as well as advocacy and research initiatives. Blood drive is Sept. 24-25
Luther is hosting a blood drive in the east court of the Main Gym in the Regents Center 9 a.m.-3 p.m. Monday and Tuesday, Sept. 24 and 25. Members of the sponsoring organization, Alpha Phi Omega, will hold signups downstairs in the Union by Marty's 11 a.m.-1 p.m. and 5-7 p.m. Thursday-Friday, Sept. 13-14 and Monday-Wednesday, Sept. 17-19.

'Presumed Guilty' religion forum Sept. 20
Asking Muslims to condemn terrorist acts can lead to racist scapegoating, an act which prevents majority populations in the West from coming to terms with their own violent past and their ongoing complicity in a violent world order, according to Todd Green. Green will present "Presumed Guilty: Why We Shouldn't Ask Muslims to Condemn Terrorism" at 7 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 20, Olin 102. The lecture is open to the public with no charge for admission, and a book signing will follow.
Anthropology and Museum Studies Visit Day Sept. 21
Luther is hosting an Anthropology and Museum Studies Visit Day from 9:30 a.m.-3:30 p.m. Friday, Sept. 21. Prospective students will be given the opportunity to have conversations with anthropology and museum studies faculty and students about academics, research and study abroad opportunities.
CSS: Cristina Pato Sept. 21
Center Stage Series presents Cristina Pato Quartet: Latina 7:30 p.m. Friday, Sept. 21, in the CFL Main Hall. Spanish bagpiper Cristina Pato uses the traditionally Celtic instrument to deliver a rich, intense repertoire. Expect a high-energy performance that fuses Latin, jazz, pop and contemporary music into one exhilarating performance. Habitat for Humanity pancake breakfast Sept. 22
The Luther College Chapter of Habitat for Humanity is hosting a pancake breakfast fundraiser from 8 a.m. to noon at St. Benedict Parish Hall, 307 W. Main St, Decorah. Proceeds will go toward the Habitat spring break service trip and Winneshiek County Habitat for Humanity. Tickets are $7 for adults and $5 for children 5-12. 'The 'S' Word' Sept. 25
Suicide attempt survivor Dese'Rae Stage seeks out other attempt survivors in order to give insight to the other side of a suicide attempt and begin a conversation about suicide attempts and loss in the documentary "The 'S' Word." Sponsored by Luther College Active Minds together with Luther's Counseling Service, Social Work Department, and Center for Intercultural Engagement and Student Success, the screening and discussion of the film is 7-8:30 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 25, in Valders 206. Both the screening and discussion are open to the public with no charge for admission.
Religion Department open house Sept. 27

Lizzo to perform Sept. 28
American hip-hop artist Lizzo will make her way to the Luther campus, with her versatile, "genre-less" style and dazzling confidence, to perform at 9 p.m. Friday, Sept. 28, in Luther's Regents Center. Doors open at 8:30 p.m. Tickets for the performance are $25 and available at the box office.
Preview Day is Sept. 29
Luther invites prospective students to experience Preview Day Saturday, Sept. 29. This event provides an initial look at life at Luther College and the community of Decorah. 'Music in The Shape of a Pear' Sept. 29
Luther presents flutist Lisa Bost-Sandberg in a concert of contemporary solo flute music at noon Saturday, Sept. 29, in the Noble Recital Hall of the Jenson-Noble Hall of Music on the Luther campus. Following the concert, at 2:30 p.m., Bost-Sandberg will present a composition workshop in the Center for the Arts Room 217. This concert marks the 28th concert in Luther's "Music in the Shape of a Pear" concert series directed by Brooke Joyce. Performances include collaborations between Luther faculty, staff and students, local musicians and guest recitalists.
'Nigeria: Religion and Humanism' Oct. 1
Hank Pellissier, founder/director of the Brighter Brains Institute, will present "Nigeria: Religion and Humanism" at 6 p.m. Monday, Oct. 1, in Valders Room 262. The presentation will briefly review BBI's activities in Uganda, and then examine religious conflict in both Nigeria's Islamic north (Boko Haram & the Almajiri system) and the Christian south (the "witch child" phenomenon).

Position opening
Administrative assistant: The Luther College Financial Aid office is currently accepting applications for a .75 FTE, six-hour per day, benefit-eligible administrative assistant. The administrative assistant is responsible for managing the daily traffic flow of the Financial Aid Office, including guests, callers, mail, email and faxes, as well as coordination of the student file completion process.

Jerry Johnson, retired director of public information, will be the featured writer Monday, Sept. 24, when Dragonfly Books in Decorah hosts an author's reading and book-signing to announce his latest novel "The Executioner's Face." The event begins at 7 p.m. at the downtown Decorah book store. Copies of "The Executioner's Face" are available at Luther College Book Shop, Dragonfly Books, Pearl Street Books in La Crosse, Peacock Books in Rochester, Chapter 2 Books and Bits & Pieces Book Store, both in Winona, and online at amazon.com.
Dean Vesperman, McKenzie Carney '18, Christian Deranek '18, Jacob Sund '18, and Emma Withers '18 have their article "Teaching Women's Suffrage" in the fall issue of the Oregon Journal for the Social Studies. The authors developed a fourth/fifth grade curriculum to help students explore and understand the importance of the 19th Amendment. They focused on using interactive pedagogies, allowing students to construct their own understanding for why women struggled to achieve suffrage.
The Education Department held its annual Teacher Induction Ceremony Friday, Sept. 9, with 57 inductees plus guests in attendance. A presentation was given by Terry Hogenson, Iowa Middle School Principal of the Year, where he talked about what he looks for in his teachers. He stated, "Don’t get me wrong, great strategies help to engage learners' minds, but if you really want to make improvement, grab them by their souls. Students are passionate about 'not letting people down' who truly care about them."
Congratulations to Asha Aden '20, on receiving the Interfaith Youth Core Rising Star award at the 2018 Interfaith Leadership Institute in Chicago this past August. Asha was one of two recipients to receive an IFYC Campus Leadership Award. Asha will be speaking in an Interfaith Storytelling Chapel 10:30-10:50 a.m. Friday, Sept. 21, in the CFL. There will be a brief reception in the CFL lobby before and after Chapel to honor Asha.
