Early voting information
Luther students received an email from vice president and dean for student life Corey Landstrom on Sept. 27 with information regarding voter registration and elections. For reference, this information is available via a Luther Google site. Early voting began Monday, Oct. 8, and a satellite polling station will be on campus 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 23, in Dahl Centennial Union. Eligible voters are encouraged to vote.

Davis Projects for Peace
Luther has been invited to participate in the summer 2019 Davis Projects for Peace. Since 2007, Luther students have carried out summer peace projects in 16 different countries around the world. Luther students, working alone or in groups, interested in designing and implementing their own grassroots projects for peace are encouraged to submit proposals of three pages or less by Jan. 14, 2019. Mental health first aid training Dec. 10
Want to be a certified mental health first aider? A limited number of openings exist for staff members to participate in adult mental health First Aid 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday, Dec. 10, with a one-hour lunch on your own in Mott Room. MHFA teaches how to help someone developing a mental health problem or experiencing a mental health crisis. Training is free for a three-year certification. Register here. Luther Serves is Oct. 20
Luther College Student Congregation volunteers will participate in the annual fall Luther Serves event Saturday, Oct. 20. Volunteers will work in morning shifts between 9:30 a.m. and noon and afternoon shifts from 1:30 to 4 p.m. Volunteers assist Decorah residents with yard work, light housework and other fall chores. The day's work schedule gives priority to Decorah residents who are elderly or disabled, but any resident in need of help may request volunteers.

Skip the cost of the emergency room or urgent care by using Teladoc. It costs less to feel better. The cost is $45 for a Teladoc General Medical visit. For the $750 preferred provider organization health plan, there is no out-of-pocket expense because it is a "routine office visit." For the high deductible health plan, there's a $45 cost, and it is applied to the out-of-pocket maximum (OOP). People who have met the OOP pay nothing. United Way update
Luther employees are 40-percent to their United Way goal of $19,000, at $7,600. There's a long way to go but with support, the goal can be reached. Consider a donation to support one of the 20 partner agencies. Donations can be designated to a particular agency. Congratulations to this week's winners, Brian Solberg and Eric Runestad. One will get a sweatshirt donated by the Book Shop, and the other, a chair massage donated by wellness.
Undergraduate research presentation opportunities
The Dean's Office supports Luther students who are selected to present their research at either of these conferences: the Seven Rivers Undergraduate Research Symposium at Viterbo University, La Crosse, Wisconsin, Nov. 9, or the Butler University Undergraduate Research Conference in Indianapolis, Indiana, April 12, 2019. Cultural Competency Part 2
Cultural competency focuses on an individual's ability to navigate and work across cultural differences. This is an opportunity to engage in dialogue and consideration of ways to shift individuals, groups and the college toward inclusive excellence both structurally and environmentally. Implicit and Unconscious Bias
Implicit bias refers to the attitudes or stereotypes that affect our understanding, actions and decisions in an unconscious manner. These biases, which encompass both favorable and unfavorable assessments, are activated involuntarily and without an individual's awareness and/or intentional control. Participants will engage in a series of interactive exercises to better understand the origins of unconscious bias and the ways that they are internalized. Explicit bias will also be explored. Flupalooza is Oct. 9
The third Annual Norse flupalooza is 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 9, in Williams Lounge in the Union. Coupons for a free cookie or coffee will be given to those Norse who help fight the flu. #FIGHTFLU and help protect yourself and the Luther community from the flu. The cost is $25 for staff and faculty, paid at the time of service by cash or check only. Students may charge the $25 to their student account.
Lawn spraying day Oct. 12
Luther will spray the lawns with herbicides to provide well-maintained, visually attractive grounds for Luther students, employees and visitors, and to control undesirable weeds on athletic fields. Weather permitting, the date for spraying is the evening of Friday, Oct. 12, with Saturday, Oct. 13, and Sunday, Oct. 14, set as back up days as needed.
In response to community requests, Ivan Hackman has established a no-spray "buffer zone" that will be observed around the pool lawn so that the play area for children is protected. Other no-spray "buffer zones" include the dike areas, edible landscape areas and the Sustainability House. Spraying will take place after normal work hours and on weekends. Questions can be directed to Facilities Services at <facilities>.
Update to Aruba wireless network
ITS is beginning the process of moving the Aruba wireless network to a new version of controller software. This upgrade will be done building by building. Upgrades are underway and begin at 6 a.m. Each building will experience approximately a 20-30 minute outage as their building is upgraded. To view the full schedule, visit the ITS Blog.

Peter Lingen will perform a recital at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 18, in Noble Recital Hall. Lingen's performance repertoire includes works by Paul Fetler, William Walton and Domenico Scarlatti. Lingen composes, arranges and performs music of his own in addition to teaching guitar and lute at Luther.
'Agents of Change' screening Oct. 18
In 1968, a group of students led the longest campus strike in the United States history in search of equality and social justice for the African American community. Today this event is seen as a starting point for the establishment of ethnic studies and social equality. Through the stories of the young men and women who lead the battle for a more relevant and meaningful education for African American students, "Agents of Change" is a film that examines the untold story of the racial conditions found on college campuses. A screening of the documentary is 6 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 18, in Valders Room 206.
CSS: 'Frankenstein' Oct. 19
Aquila Theatre brings "Frankenstein" back to life in their performance of the Mary Shelley classic. They tell the story of the scientist, his creation and the question of the nature of innovation as they continue the Luther College 2018-19 Center Stage Series at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Oct. 19.

Free screening of 'The Mayo Clinic: Faith-Hope-Science' Oct. 21
Ken Burns' film, "The Mayo Clinic: Faith-Hope-Science," will be screened in Olin 102 at 7 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 21. Blending historical narrative with contemporary patient stories, the two-hour film is a timely look at how one institution has met the changing demands of healthcare for 150 years—and what that can teach us about facing the challenges of patient care today. Introduction by Luther Regent Chris Gade, chair, department of public affairs at Mayo Clinic and Eric Olson from KSMQ Public Television.
'The Coddling of the American Mind' Oct. 23
Jonathan Haidt, social psychologist and professor of ethical leadership at New York University's Stern School of Business, will give the Farwell Distinguished Lecture at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 23, in the CFL Main Hall. Don't have time to read Haidt's new book, "The Coddling of the American Mind?" Get a sense of his argument in this Atlantic article of the same name. Please encourage students to attend!

Position opening
Full-time program coordinator: The music marketing team is looking for a full-time program coordinator to plan, coordinate and promote a variety of Luther music tours, festivals and special events. Responsibilities include planning, marketing and leading one or two ensemble tours each year; managing an annual Dorian Festival; serving as the operations manager for Christmas at Luther, managing music marketing websites and social media platforms; and coordinating marketing and planning projects with the director and associate director of music marketing. A four-year college degree is required.
Administrative assistant: Paideia program/English department is seeking a .75 FTE highly motivated, detail-oriented individual with strong interpersonal and written communication skills for a seven-hours-per-day, during the academic year, approximately 10-months position. The administrative assistant manages the daily operation of the Paideia office, including desktop publishing of the Paideia Reader and Paideia materials, production of the "Agora" and the English department newsletter. An associate's degree and five years applicable experience is preferred as well as aptitude to learning and using new technology with desktop publishing experience helpful.
Full-time assistant director of facilities: This position is responsible for maintaining cleanliness inside campus buildings and overall supervision of staff necessary to carry out the responsibilities assigned to the custodial and grounds departments. The assistant director assists in budget preparation and acts as a backup to the director in their absence. Qualified candidates must have a combination of education and management experience equal to a minimum of eight years of experience in staff management. A baccalaureate degree is strongly preferred.

ARTICLES, CREATIONS, HONORS
Tex A. Sordahl, Dawn M. Reding and Yifeng Zhang '17, a current University of Iowa graduate student, recently had their paper, "Window strike mortality records of birds in northeastern Iowa" published in Iowa Bird Life, a quarterly journal of the Iowa Ornithologists' Union. The paper is based on 387 records from the Hoslett Museum of Natural History at Luther.
Kelly Sorenson has earned the Certified Gift Planning Associate certificate. The Gift College Certification program is designed to increase knowledge and expertise in gift planning, through a coursework requirement of 50 credits, along with successful completion of a CGPA exam.
Geophysical surveying was used this summer to study the prehistoric Oneota site and Effigy Mounds in northeastern Iowa. Through her summer research project, Anna Luber '20 and Linh Luong '21, are exploring these sites through geophysical surveying to provide a look into their structures without physically digging them up. The pair are working with Colin Betts on their project, "Multi-instrumental geophysical survey of two prehistoric earthwork sites in Northeast Iowa."
Sam Moyer '20, collaborated with fellow researchers John Kelly '21, and Laura Olson '20, as well as advisers Tommy Occhipinti and Eric Westlund to tackle the Parker's Square-sum conjecture for his summer research project. They were given a list of the numbers from 1-15 where each two adjacent numbers sum up to a perfect square and then given the objective of showing if this list was possible with numbers greater than 15.

The IRONMAN World Championship is Saturday, Oct. 13, in Kailua-Kona, Hawaii. The first competition was held in Feb. 1987 on the Big Island, with 15 people competing and 12 crossing the finish line. The event blossomed when "ABC's Wide World of Sports" first covered the sport in 1980. Since then, triathlons have sprung up world-wide. Now held on the Saturday nearest the full moon in October, Hawaii's race boasts 1,500 competitors from 50 countries, with 8,000 volunteers and crowds as large as 25,000. The first-place man and woman each receive $70,000.
