COLLEGE OPERATIONS

'Christmas at Luther' parking restrictions

In order to accommodate the large number of visitors anticipated for "Christmas at Luther," the following parking restrictions are in effect from 7 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 28, to 4 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 2, when normal lot regulations will go back into effect:

The general parking areas of the library, Jenson-Noble and city pool lots will be reserved for visitors. Students should move their vehicles from these lots to either the Regents Center or Farwell lots. Faculty and staff may park in the Jenson, library and Sampson Hoffland lots provided they move by 5:30 p.m. Thursday-Saturday and 10 a.m. Sunday unless attending the performance.

Exception: Vehicles displaying a commuter, Baker or college apartment sticker may park in the gravel city pool lot provided they vacate the spaces before 4 p.m. Thursday-Saturday and 10 a.m. Sunday.

The faculty/staff parking area by Valders will be reserved for handicapped parking. Alternative parking includes the roadway from Sampson Hoffland to the main gate, Regents Center and Farwell lots.

Starting at 5 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 29, through Sunday, Dec. 2, the lots on the east and west side of the CFL will also be designated for handicapped parking only.

Cooperation with these changes is appreciated. Vehicles found to be in violation of these special event restrictions are subject to fines.

Christmas staff meeting

Mark your calendars for a relaxing and fun time at the annual "staff meeting" Christmas gathering 9-10 a.m. Wednesday, Dec. 5, in Peace Dining Room.

Annual Fall Science Research Symposium Dec. 6

The annual Fall Science Research Symposium is 9:40-10:50 a.m., Thursday, Dec. 6, in the Sampson-Hoffland Atrium and Valders Concourse. This is a unified event highlighting undergraduate student research in the sciences. The symposium includes more than 100 poster presentations by students from classes in biology, chemistry, environmental studies, math and nursing. All members of the Luther community are encouraged to come check out the products of student learning in the sciences.

TIAA on-campus workshop: Paying yourself: Income options in retirement
Know how to pay yourself in retirement? There are lots of considerations—including tax implications—that can affect income. There will be a workshop "Paying yourself: Income options in retirement," 9:15-10:15 a.m. Wednesday, Nov. 28, in the CFL Recital Hall. TIAA's workshop leader will explain the basic rules governing most common retirement accounts to help participants gain perspective on when to withdraw different assets. Sign up for the final wellness screenings Dec. 11-12

During 2018, employees and spouses covered by the Luther College Health Care Plan have additional wellness benefits and requirements. Just a reminder that all physicals, blood draws and completions of the Health Risk Assessment must be completed by Monday, Dec. 31.

Flu vaccine clinic Dec. 3

Who needs a flu vaccine? Protect yourself, loved ones and the Luther community by getting the flu vaccine 2-4:30 p.m. Monday, Dec. 3, in the lower level of the Regents Center. Students may charge their student account and do not need to pay at the time of service. Faculty and staff need to pay with cash or check and will receive a receipt for reimbursement. The vaccine is $25.

Not Quite Free Lunch Dec. 11

Join colleagues at the Not Quite Free Lunch 11:30 a.m.-1:15 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 11, in the Nobel Room, sponsored by Wellness. Boost social and emotional wellness by getting away from the typical work space and mingling with folks from across campus. The charge is $5, payable by cash, check or Luther ID. Watch for these clues that a message could be a scam: poor grammar and punctuation, threats, a sense of urgency and asking recipients to click on a link or provide personal information. Save the date: Roslien Lecture May 1

Professor James Hansen will give the David J. Roslien Lecture on Science and Leadership 7 p.m. Wednesday, May 1, in the CFL Main Hall. Hansen was one of the first scientists to bring the issue of global climate change to the world stage, testifying before Congress in 1988. In his long career at both NASA and Columbia University, he has continued to raise his voice against those who disbelieve or fail to act. Please encourage students to attend.

'From Luther to the international stage: My journey as a woman leader'

The daughter of former Botswanian president Quett Ketumile Masire, Luther alumna Gaone Masire '83, will reflect on her career in the Lucille Brickner Brown Price Lecture on women in leadership. The lecture is 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 27, in Valders 206. Open to the public with no charge for admission, the lecture is part of the fall 2018 events commemorating the 50th anniversary of Luther's Black Student Union. 

Peace Projects discussion Nov. 28

Last summer, Luther students Anila Bano '20, Rebecka Green '18, and Sthela Gun Holly Hanitrinirina '19, participated in a leadership conference in Pakistan, a Peace Scholar program in Norway and a Davis Projects for Peace in Madagascar, respectively. Come hear them discuss their amazing experiences 4-5 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 28, in Olin 102. Center for Ethics and Public Engagement resident Gaone Masire '83, daughter of the former president of Botswana, will moderate the panel, and hopefully inspire ideas for international engagement. Position openings

Assistant director of admissions: A .75 FTE position. Primary responsibilities include the recruitment of students from a specific geographical region, visiting targeted high schools, attend select college fair programs and coordinate all social media outreach for the Admission Office. Duties also include interviewing prospective students on campus and assisting with other admissions-related activities/events as assigned. Extensive travel is required, and candidates must be able to work evenings and weekends when appropriate. Candidates should have excellent oral and written communication skills, some computer knowledge and the ability to make public presentations. Previous experience in admissions or a related field is preferred, and an appreciation for residential, liberal arts colleges would be helpful. A bachelor's degree is required, and applicants must have a valid driver's license. Experience in sales, marketing, communication and education is highly desirable. This position is open only to internal applicants.

Full-time CRM coordinator: Admissions seeks a highly-motivated individual for a position coordinating the use of Luther's CRM platform for strategic admission recruitment. Primary responsibilities for the position include planning and executing the recruitment processes that are run out of Slate. Bachelor's degree, knowledge of enrollment management and knowledge of CRM systems required. This position is open only to internal applicants.

Part-time administrative assistantnursing, Rochester campus: Coordinates and carries out the ongoing support staff activities for the Department of NursingRochester office. An associate's degree is required. Experience working in an office, proficiency working with computers, strong organizational skills, effective interpersonal communications skills and ability to work independently are required.

ARTICLES, CREATIONS, HONORS

Amy Weldon was nominated by the literary magazine "The Hopper," for a Pushcart Prize for her story "The Serpent." Weldon's story appeared in Issue III of "The Hopper" in 2018 and can be read on Weldon's website, https://amyeweldon.com/short-fiction/.

Jim Martin-Schramm delivered a panel presentation on "Preaching Creation and Ecology" in the Homiletics section at the annual meeting of the Society of Biblical Literature in Denver, Colorado Nov. 18. The following day he also responded to four papers that addressed a book he co-edited, Eco-Reformation: Grace and Hope for a Planet in Peril, at a joint session of the Christian Spirituality Unit and the Religion and Ecology Unit at the annual meeting of the American Academy of Religion.

Loren Toussaint and colleagues from an international collaboration from Germany, Austria, the United Kingdom and the United States published an article, "Physical activity and potential correlates in hemodialysis patients," in the journal "Prevention and Health Promotion."

Congratulations to Kate Martinson on being featured in The Atlantic in the piece, "The Star of Norwegian Knitwear: The selburose design wasn’t invented in Norway, but it became a symbol of the country." See the article at: https://tinyurl.com/katemart.

David Shindelar '19, spent his summer in St. Joseph, Missouri, interning for the Kansas City Chiefs football team. Shindelar coordinated, managed and operated the youth fan experience and worked on local marketing campaigns, player-fan interaction and other daily operational tasks.

Faye Lee '20, spent her summer interning with the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America. While there, she focused on donor engagement and fundraising. Specifically, this included researching prospective donors, creating fundraising strategies and publicity for the Global Church.

Bishal Parajuli '20, spent his summer in Decorah, Iowa, working with the Iowa Natural Heritage Foundation, where he maintained and restored native landscapes in Northeast Iowa.

Christine Wattermann '20, spent the summer interning at Find Your Power, a non-profit company based in Minneapolis aimed at empowering women. Wattermann worked to establish an individual giving plan for Find Your Power.
