A message from President Carlson

Dear Luther faculty and staff,

This Christmas season, the college will be closing for business for one additional paid holiday, Wednesday, Dec. 26. This will be in addition to our regularly scheduled holidays for Christmas and New Year's: Dec. 24, 25, 31 and Jan. 1.

If you were already planning on taking Dec. 26 as a vacation day, you do not need to record the day as vacation. If you were planning on working, you will have it as an additional holiday. There are some positions that do work when the college is closed for business; supervisors will work directly with those staff members on their schedules.

Non-exempt employees will be paid on Friday, Dec. 21, to accommodate this change. Supervisors are asked to work with their staff and students to ensure that time cards are completed by the end of the day tomorrow, Friday, Dec. 14. Supervisors should make any corrections necessary and approve time cards by noon Monday, Dec. 17.

No water in the Union Dec. 26-28

In order to replace a section of the main sanitary sewer line within the Union, it will be necessary to prohibit water use Wednesday-Friday, Dec. 26-28. Since the sewer line will not be fully connected, no use of building water and drains will be allowed. This includes all sinks, toilets, drinking fountains, etc. Restroom facilities in the CFL and Main will be available. This repair does not affect the building fire sprinkler system. No Tuesday on Dec. 25

Because the College will be closed Monday-Wednesday, Dec. 24-26, there will be no distribution of the Tuesday on Dec. 25. The next Tuesday will be distributed Wednesday, Jan. 2. Deadline for the Jan. 2 edition is 3 p.m. Friday, Dec. 28.

CEPE faculty research fellowship: Call for applications

The Center for Ethics and Public Engagement invites applications from any tenure-track faculty for a two-year research fellowship. The fellowship provides one course release per year to allow the fellow time to conduct academic research or discipline-specific work related to CEPE's annual theme. Please see CEPE website for details and application instructions. Application deadline is Friday, Feb. 15, 2019.

Some call Ed Fallon's 3,100-mile trek from Los Angeles to Washington, D.C. a modern-day "Odyssey." Walk along with Fallon in his reflective memoir, "Marcher, Walker, Pilgrim," as he and dozens of others call attention to climate change. Like Odysseus, Fallon experiences loneliness, lost love, extreme pain, unpredictable weather and attempted mutiny. Join a January book group here, and prepare for Fallon's visit to campus Thursday, Feb. 21. Sponsored by the Center for Ethics and Public Engagement.

Don't let flu give you the holiday blues

It's not too late to get a flu shot. Walk into Health Services at anytime during office hours and receive the flu vaccine. Flu season peaks between December and February. There's still time to get vaccinated.

Program directors named

The Dean's Office and the Center for Global Learning are pleased to announce the appointment of Robert and Victoria Christman as the 2020-21 Nottingham Program Co-Directors and the appointment of Robert Vrtis as the 2020 Malta Program Director. We are grateful to these faculty members for providing leadership to two important and longstanding off-campus programs.  

Workshop: Using Google Sites for eportfolios

In collaboration with ITS, the eportfolio pilot committee invites all faculty and staff members who are interested in learning more about how to use Google Sites and its capabilities for eportfolios to a workshop 10 a.m.-noon Wednesday, Jan. 9, in Preus Library's Hovde Room. Some of the key benefits of using eportfolios with students and technical aspects of using Google Sites will be presented. Examples of eportfolios created using this platform and time for hands-on work in Google Sites will also be presented. To register, click here.

'The Chessboard' to be released

A new student publication, "The Chessboard," will be circulated for the first time this week. The publication is sponsored by the Center for Ethics and Public Engagement and will contain student-written essays on a wide variety of social, political and cultural topics. Its goal is to stoke campus-wide conversations about contemporary issues. Copies will be distributed around campus, particularly in the Union. Pick up a copy and enjoy!

Worship services will not be held on campus during Christmas break. Chapel will resume Monday, Jan. 7, and Sunday morning worship will resume Jan. 13. College Ministries wishes all safe travel and a joyful and blessed Christmas and New Year!
