HR Updates

1095-C forms are out
Human Resources has generated 2019 Employer-Provided Health Insurance Offer and Coverage 1095-C forms. Employees who elected to receive those online can log in to NorseHub to view, and all other employees should have received a copy via campus mail last week. If you did not receive a form or have questions, please contact Matthew Bills at <bills> or 387-1189.

Be considerate of those with fragrance and food sensitivities
Please help us to accommodate our fellow students, faculty and staff that have sensitivities to various chemical-based, scented products or to food allergies. Scented products such as hair spray, perfume/cologne, body sprays, air fresheners and diffused essential oils can trigger reactions such as respiratory distress, nausea, headaches and migraines. Please refrain from bringing nuts or peanut butter products into the classroom, as well, as we have had some situations with allergic reactions in the classroom. Not Quite Free Lunch March 10

Join colleagues at the Not Quite Free Lunch 11:30 a.m.–1:15 p.m. Tuesday, March 10, in Peace Dining Room, sponsored by Wellness. Boost social and emotional wellness by getting away from the typical work space and mingling with folks from across campus. Wilderness First Aid training

Are you wild and adventurous at heart? Keep yourself and others safe in the backcountry by registering now for Wilderness First Aid March 14–15, at Luther College. Dining Services Customer Loyalty Survey

Sign up for a March wellness screening

During 2020, employees and spouses covered by the Luther College Health Care Plan have additional wellness benefits and requirements. There are only a few spots left for the Tuesday, March 10, blood screenings with Gunderson Health Systems here on campus. CEPE Book Group

"Presumed Incompetent: The Intersections of Women and Class in Academia" offers a look into the struggles that women of color face within higher institutions of learning. Sign up to read this collection of essays organized into five themes: general campus climate; faculty/student relations; social class, tokenism, and the search process; tenure and promotion; and networks for allies and mentors. Luther Spring Gospel Sunday

All are welcome to participate this weekend, March 7–8, with Luther's Gospel Choir, no previous experience necessary. A rehearsal will be held from 3–5 p.m. Saturday, March 7, in the Jenson Noble Choir room. The Rev. Dr. Alisha Jones will direct the choir along with Kaleb Krzyszton. The choir will help lead Gospel Sunday worship at 10 a.m. Sunday, March 8, in the CFL Recital Hall. 

Thanks from TRIO

Thanks to everyone who celebrated National TRIO Day by stopping by the TRIO open house last Friday. It was an awesome day of food, fellowship and fun! Congratulations to door prize winners Anne Edison-Albright, Eddy Atwell and Sarah Crose. TRIO is a student-retention program that helps first-generation and income-eligible students make the most of their college experience and reach their potential. The program, which has benefitted Luther students since 1973, currently serves 194 participants.

Prescribed fire and burn crew training session March 11

Interested in being on Luther's prescribed burn crew? Attend a training session at 6 p.m. Wednesday, March 11, in Valders 262. You will learn about goals for using fire in our woodlands and prairies, and about fire safety and responsibilities while on a burn. All students, faculty, staff and community members are welcome to participate. Email Molly McNicoll, <mcnimo01>, with questions or to learn about other events on the natural areas.

Speed limit

Please observe the posted speed limit of 15 MPH on campus roads. With Luther being a residential campus, there are many times that streets are used for walking and running. One benefit of a 15 MPH limit is that drivers should be able to react to pedestrians in a safe manner. Speed limit signs are posted at campus entrances.

Crosswalk reminder

Many campus crosswalks, but not all, are permanently identified by red stamped concrete. Per Iowa code, "The driver of a vehicle shall yield the right-of-way, slowing down or stopping if need be to so yield, to a pedestrian crossing the roadway within any marked crosswalk or within any unmarked crosswalk at an intersection." The Luther Vehicle Regulation Manual states, "Drivers are to yield to pedestrians at all times." Please follow these regulations while driving.

Music class for grades K-6th

Registration is open for Wednesday morning group music classes through the Luther College Community Music School. This program is open to youth in grades K-6th and meets at Decorah Lutheran Church 8–8:45 a.m. Wednesday mornings. The spring session runs March 4–May 13 (no class on March 25). Cost is $40 and is free to Decorah Lutheran Church Members. Register online. Email <LCCMS>.

Creative Movement Classes through Luther Dance program

Luther College Dance program announces Creative Movement Classes for children in kindergarten through third grade. The goals of these classes are to foster creativity, freedom and expression through movement. All classes will be taught by Luther College dance students on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 3:30-5:30 in the Center for the Arts, Studio One. No registration needed. $10/session per child. Dates are March 3, 5, 10, 12, and 31. April 2, 7, 9, 14, 16, 21, 23, 28, and 30. Come move with us! Contact <hawleyja> with questions.

Elementary reading tutors

Students majoring in elementary education are looking to offer free tutoring for children who could use extra support in reading. Any child in K-5 who could benefit from 1–2 hours per week with work on phonics, fluency, vocabulary, comprehension and spelling is most welcome. Tutoring would be from March 9–May 15. Spring Career Fair March 5

Please encourage all students of all majors looking for an internship, full-time employment or a chance to network, to attend the Spring Career Fair 10 a.m.–3 p.m. Thursday, March 5, in the Dahl Centennial Union. Over 40 organizations will be attending. Some companies will be signing students up at this event for future interviews. Sponsored by the Career Center.

Erdman Prize Competition

Let your students know that the Erdman Prize "Pitch-Off" is back for another exciting round of competition between student established businesses. Prizes are one $6,000 scholarship and two runner-up awards of $3,000, awarded to students of any year or any major who have demonstrated exceptional entrepreneurial skills during their student years at Luther College. Study abroad scholarship opportunities

Have students who are studying abroad in the 2020-21 academic year? Encourage them to apply for the following two scholarship opportunities: The Olga Fischer-Proehl Scholarship provides $3,000 to a female International Studies major studying abroad and The Melin and Melin-Brownell Scholarships provide $7,500 each to two students studying abroad in Africa, with preference given to sub-Saharan Africa. Krahn Family Student Life Service Award ($1000 award)

Nominations for this award must be current sophomore and junior students who have demonstrated a strong contribution to campus life in a way that embraces the spirit and mission of Luther College. Any student, faculty, or staff member may nominate a student. This award is designed to recognize a student who makes a positive impact to student life. This $1,000 award is expected to be over and above any financial assistance a student receives. The nomination form can be found here: https://www2.luther.edu/studentlife/awards/. Nominations are due by March 20, 2020.

Kuh Family "Positively Luther" Award ($5000 award)

This award is given each year to a student whose character, leadership, and participation in co-curricular and other educationally purposeful activities enhance the quality of campus life. The recipient must be in good academic standing with a demonstrated need for financial assistance. This $5,000 award is expected to be over and above the financial aid package offered by the college. Author, Judy Shepard will be lecturing as part of the "Hope Over Hate" lecture series on Tuesday, March 3, in the CFL Main Hall. After the lecture she will be signing her book, "The Meaning of Matthew". Her book is currently available in the Book Shop and will be available at the event, too.

'Hope Over Hate' lecture: Judy Shepard March 3

Judy Shepard, author of "The Meaning of Matthew" and co-founder of the Matthew Shepard Foundation, will speak of losing her gay son to a hate crime in 1999, and the ways in which grief became action. 7 p.m. Tuesday, March 3, in the CFL Main Hall. "Hope Over Hate" lectures are sponsored by CEPE and Campus Programming.

'Hope Over Hate' lecture: Pedro Lopez Vega '17 March 5

Pedro Lopez Vega '17 will share his experience of the Postville ICE raid, and his triumph over trauma, at 7 p.m. Thursday, March 5, in the CFL Recital Hall. "Hope Over Hate" lectures sponsored by CEPE and Campus Programming. 

Ethnic Arts Festival March 7

Luther will celebrate the Ethnic Arts Festival 11 a.m.–3 p.m. Saturday, March 7, in the Regents Center North Gym. The event is open to the public with no charge for admission, and there will be food available for purchase. This year's festival will feature a 12 p.m. presentation by William Quackenbush of the Ho-Chunk Nation. Additional activities include a Culture Fair, student performances, henna hand art, hair braiding, and children's activities. We hope you will join us at this family-friendly event to celebrate the many cultures represented here at Luther.

CSS: Catapult March 7

Center Stage Series presents Catapult at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, March 7, in the CFL Main Hall. A finalist on America's Got Talent, this shadow-illusion dance troupe has received international acclaim for its athleticism, artistry, and imagination. Paideia Texts and Issues Lecture March 10

Anita Carrasco will present a lecture titled, "Culture As Resistance in the Chilean Andes: An Indigenous Community's Fight for Their Rights and Recognition in the Face of Mining" at 7 p.m. Tuesday, March 10, in the CLF Recital Hall. Carrasco's talk focuses on the Likantatay, an urban indigenous community in Calama, a mining town in the Atacama Desert. This is the final Paideia Texts and Issues Lecture of the 2019-20 series "Resistance and Resilience." A reception in Qualley Lounge will follow the lecture.

CSS: 'Seeds' March 14

At 7:30 p.m. Saturday, March 14, the Center Stage Series presents "Seeds," a theatrical reenactment of the tumultuous seven-year battle between a Canadian farmer and the biotech corporation, Monsanto. "This play is so much more than a documentary drama about a court case," says Kristen Underwood, director of campus programming. "Porte Parole Theatre Company makes it both thrilling and theatrical and we leave the theatre still grappling with big ideas." 

Women, Faith, and Finance Seminar April 3

On Friday, April 3, Luther is hosting the 16th annual Women, Faith, and Finance seminar at the Hotel Winneshiek. Women of all ages are invited to come and learn more about money and relationships, wills and powers of attorney, investing, and identity theft. Cost is $30, bring a friend and each save $5. Positions

Full-time custodial staff floor crew position. The floor crew custodial staff member maintains floors in academic and residential buildings. Will work with floor care machinery, carpet extractors, floor buffers and floor machines. General custodial responsibilities include overall appearance of assigned academic and resident hall building(s). Hours will generally be 10:30 p.m.–7 a.m. Sunday evening through Friday morning. Must be able to read sufficiently to follow instructions, ability to mix appropriate chemical dilution ratio and understand directions for use. Must be able to work with little supervision, complete work thoroughly and promptly, and be self-motivated. High school diploma or equivalent preferred but not required.

ARTICLES, CREATIONS, HONORS

Congratulations to juniors Kim Chham and Levi Bird, who have been selected to represent Luther College as Peace Scholars in Norway this summer. The Peace Scholar program provides funding for two students to study for a week at the Nansen Center for Peace and Dialogue in Lillehammer, followed by five weeks at the International Summer School at the University of Oslo.

David Njus and Lexi Scharmer '16 published the article "Evidence that God Attachment Makes a Unique Contribution to Psychological Well-Being" in The International Journal for the Psychology of Religion.

Orçun Selçuk and Astrid Arrarás (Florida International University) published their chapter "Autogolpe en Turquía (2016-2018): Lecciones del Perú" as part of an edited volume La derecha como autoritarismo en el siglo XXI by Armando Chaguaceda and Luis Duno-Gottberg.
