Coronavirus updates

Each week, we will use this section to highlight key messages to various members of the Luther community and summarize developments and decisions over the past week. Whenever possible, we will also signal forthcoming messages.

Homecoming
In-person Homecoming events scheduled on campus for Oct. 9-11, 2020 have been canceled. Virtual Homecoming events for alumni and friends will be offered instead beginning Oct. 9 and continuing throughout the fall. Five committee-sponsored reunions (Classes of 1970, 1980, 1985, 1995 and 2010) have been rescheduled to occur on campus on Memorial Day weekend (May 28-30, 2021). Additional provisional plans include creating a student-focused Homecoming this fall.

Please continue to monitor the Health Advisories webpage for information connected to Luther College’s response to the COVID-19 pandemic, guidance from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the Iowa Department of Public Health, and answers to frequently asked questions.

COLLEGE OPERATIONS

Call for suggestions for the 2021 Paideia Summer Read

What book could our incoming first-year students read for Paideia in service of what President Ward called Luther’s “ongoing work of studying, disrupting, and doing our part" to address systemic racism? Books can be fiction or nonfiction, classic or recent. They should be no more than about 250 pages long, and accessible to incoming college students. Send book suggestions to <paideia> by June 22 and consider joining the Choosing the 2021 Summer Read workshop.

Decorah Community Writing Project "de-isolation" underway

Welcome Center desk closed 

The Welcome Center desk will be closed from June 27-July 12. As a reminder, the campus directory is available online for anyone needing assistance to locate contact information for an office.

Orientation assistance needed

It's time to grab your oars! We are looking for staff/faculty first-year mentors for Orientation. Mentors will work with a small group of students, helping them transition to life and academics at Luther College. If you are interested please sign up for more information here. Father's Day cards available
The Book Shop has greeting cards set up outside of the Book Shop. Graduation, Father's Day, birthday, sympathy and encouragement cards are all available for $2.50. Leave cash in the basket.

Retirement

Amy Webber, who has worked at Luther for more than 24 years, has announced her retirement effective July 31. We congratulate Amy and thank her for her dedicated service to the college. 

Judy Schnitzler, who has worked at Luther for more than 24 years, has announced her retirement effective August 3. We congratulate Judy and thank her for her dedicated service to the college.  

Ken Larson, who has worked at Luther for more than 39 years, has announced his retirement effective August 14. We congratulate Ken and thank him for his dedicated service to the college.  

ARTICLES, CREATIONS, HONORS

Colin Betts remotely presented the results of a geophysical survey of the Highlandville School conducted as part of his spring 2020 Remote Sensing in Archaeology course at the 2020 Preserve Iowa Summit. The survey revealed the well preserved foundations of the earlier ca. 1860 one-room schoolhouse on the site as well as possible archaeological traces of the original 1857 log school.

Ideas and Creations 

Sören Steding shares in his post "de-isolation—from Münster to the Decorah Community Writing Project" how the recent Münster Program was cut short because of COVID-19 and how he's using a new community writing project to help himself and others process the experiences of a pandemic.

In the post "Twin Cities Dispatch During Turbulent Times", Susan Schmidt talks about all that has happened in the last two weeks near her home in St. Paul, her discussions with social work graduates, her commitment to teach in a way that builds knowledge about the role of race and racism, and actions we can take to create change.
