Coronavirus updates

Planned Power Outage
As a reminder, there will be a required campus-wide power outage on Thursday, July 2. The outage is required in order to replace a section of “spacer cable” that is old, has caused issues in the past and cannot accept the installation of a new switch/relay on the high voltage service that feeds campus. The power will be turned off at approximately 7:30 a.m. CST, the outage is expected to last about six hours.
For this reason and as an expression of the extraordinary effort that staff and faculty have exhibited during these last several months, the college will be closed on July 2. The alternate date in the event of weather will be Friday, July 10.
COLLEGE OPERATIONS
2020 Family Weekend canceled
Due to the COVID-19 pandemic and the risks involved with gathering in large groups, this year's Family Weekend, originally scheduled for Sept. 25-27, will not be held in-person. Plans are being developed for a couple of virtual events instead with details forthcoming. Be sure to mark next year's 2021 calendar for Family Weekend, Sept. 17-19.
Free online interfaith conference featuring Luther scholars
The Network of ELCA Colleges and University Interfaith Gathering (set to be hosted in person at Luther this year) has moved to two 1.5 hour online webinars that are free and available to the Luther community. Professors Gereon Kopf and Wanda Deifelt, as well as Asha Aden '20, will take part as panelists with Pastor Anne Edison-Albright and Vicar Amalia Vagts hosting. The webinars are from 1-2:30 p.m. on Wednesday, July 15 ("Religiously Fluid in the 21st Century: Higher Education and the Case for Interreligious Education") and Thursday, July 16 ("A Declaration of Inter-Religious Commitment: A policy statement of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America"). Preus Library services update
Library book and equipment checkouts will not be available on July 2, the day of the planned campus power outage (rain date: July 10). Please plan ahead if you will require access to library resources over the holiday weekend. Remote checkouts continue to be available. Anti-racism education
As we continue to educate ourselves and one another in the work of anti-racism at Luther College, please note that the KATIE site on Diversity, Civility, and the Liberal Arts is now available to all faculty, staff and students. It includes readings and presentations from an anti-racism institute, information on the Race Exhibit that was on display at Luther in fall of 2019 and a link to the New York Times 1619 Project.
Portrait and passport photos
Summer portrait and passport photos days will be offered on Thursday, June 25, from 11 a.m.-3 p.m. and again on Thursday, July 23, from 11 a.m.-3 p.m. Beginning in August, portrait and passport photo days will resume on the second Thursday of each month from 9 a.m-4 p.m. Portraits are free to students, faculty and staff. Passport photos are $5 each. Photos are taken in Dahl Centennial Union, room 213. If you have any questions, please contact <bjerni01>.
Conservation grazing goats in Roslien Woods
As part of a novel restoration project to reduce the abundance of invasive shrubs, Luther's natural areas will be home to a local goat herd for the next 4-6 weeks. You may visit the goats in Roslien Woods but please keep groups small and noise levels low while the goats get used to their surroundings. High voltage electric fencing is being used to keep the goats enclosed so do NOT touch the fence, lean over fencing or enter the goat enclosure. Contact <mcnimo01> with any questions.
"Lessons learned from the 2008 recession"
The Luther College Career Center and Alumni Office have partnered together to develop a virtual, two-part Tuesday mini-series, designed to engage our community and support our 2020 graduates and rising seniors with their life and career journey during this unprecedented time. Last week, six Luther alumni who graduated into the last recession shared their stories with honesty and compassion, describing the strategies for how they overcame challenges and navigated their way forward. "Navigating forward using design thinking and strengths"
Part II of the series developed by the Luther College Career Center and Alumni Office will be presented live on the Luther College Alumni Facebook page at 7 p.m. Tuesday, June 30. Jodi Enos-Berlage, associate dean for integrated academic and career development and Miriam Skrade, CliftonStrengths program coordinator, will partner with current students, Levi Bird '21 and Shana Liu '21, to reframe common career misconceptions and share new approaches through the lens of design thinking and individual strengths. Receive encouragement and learn tools and strategies, including networking skills, to build your way forward.
The Bulletin: Summer edition
The Bulletin, emailed from the Campus Programming Office each Tuesday and Friday, carries event listings and other announcements of interest to students and the greater campus community. It typically takes a pause during the summer and resumes in August. This year, however, the Bulletin will continue through the summer, with a release every Friday as a way to connect students and others to campus life with news of special projects and programs. Please send submissions to <bulletin> by noon on Thursdays.

Position openings
Multimedia strategic fellow (1.0 FTE): Will participate on the User Services and Multimedia teams within Information Technology Services to assist the multimedia and makerspace lead in promoting and supporting the effective uses of video, audio, textual, graphical and other electronic media in support of both online and on-campus teaching, learning, research and administrative purposes. Qualified candidates have a bachelor's degree or equivalent professional experience. Preference will be given to a recent Luther graduate who was a multimedia technician student worker or other student worker within ITS or Luther.
Interim coordinator, Catalyze program & transfer student support (1.0 FTE): Perform extensive student support and administrative services. Duties will include providing oversight of the day-to-day functioning of the Catalyze program including the supervision of two Catalyze coaches. Qualified candidates have a master's degree and knowledge of the NASPA/ACPA professional competencies for student affairs educators. A minimum of two years of documented experience working with historically underrepresented students is required as well as a demonstrated ability to effectively navigate issues of cultural differences, combined with an understanding of student development.
Science technical support staff (1.0 FTE): Responsible for the procurement, repair and general maintenance of equipment in the departments of biology, chemistry and physics. Main focus of repair and maintenance will be on electronics needs. Also responsible for computer support in all three departments. Qualified candidates have an associate’s degree with training and/or experience in the general operation, maintenance and repair of electronic equipment and basic knowledge of computer set-up and maintenance. Candidates with a bachelor’s degree in a related field strongly preferred.

Selected by The Austrian-American Educational Commission (AAEC), Madeleine Flom-Staab '20 and Annelise Myers '20, will be serving as U.S. Teaching Assistants in Austria for the 2020-21 academic year. Flom-Staab will serve as an English teaching assistant in two secondary schools in Berndorf while Myers will work as a teaching assistant at a teacher training college in Graz. Zach Ziarnak also received a USTA grant but is unable to accept the position.
Ideas and Creations
In the post "A Critical Time to Focus on Global Health," Maryna Bazylevych introduces the new Global Health major, shares why it's especially relevant during this time and how it helps students become better citizens of the world.
"Solar + Storage" is a post written by Jim Martin-Schramm where he discusses Luther's greenhouse gas reduction goals. He also shares how a current project increases renewable energy on campus while achieving additional cost savings through energy storage.
