Branding Workshop/Community Lunch/Service of Dedication: Tomorrow
A reminder that all faculty and staff are invited to a branding workshop, a community lunch, and the annual Service of Dedication on Wednesday, Aug. 28. Please join us for a day of building community and celebrating the beginning of the new academic year.
- The branding workshop will occur from 8:30-11:30 a.m. in the CFL, Main Hall. The workshop will be facilitated by Hayley Berlent and Rachel Bauer from the Additive Agency.
- The community lunch will occur from 11:30 a.m.-1 p.m. in Peace Dining Room. The lunch is free of charge to all faculty, staff and emeriti.
- The Service of Dedication will begin at 1:30 p.m. in the CFL, Main Hall. Please note that the Service of Dedication has been changed from Thursday to Wednesday this year.

Staff and faculty invited to Campus Updates: Friday, Aug. 30
All staff and faculty are invited to the Campus Update 8:15-9:30 a.m. Friday, Aug. 30, in the CFL, Main Hall. This will be a joint session to set the stage for the 2019-20 school year. All staff and faculty are encouraged to attend and offices are allowed to close for the Campus Update.

Parking restrictions for move-in weekend Aug. 30-31
On Saturday, Aug. 31, Luther will be filled with excitement as first-year students and their families experience the joy of moving into our residence halls. In order to help facilitate the move-in process we will be reserving parking areas near the halls to accommodate the movers. Special parking restrictions will go into effect starting at 5:30 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 30. The small parking lot south of Ylvisaker and the lot north of Valders will be reserved for vehicles unloading for move in. High Street, between Jenson and Campus House, will be designated as a one way street, west to east, so moving vehicles may park on the north side of the street. There will be no parking on the south side of the street. Faculty, staff and students are asked to refrain from parking in these areas. Thank you for your cooperation in extending this welcome to the new members of the Luther community.
Call for nominations for College Resource Council
The College Resource Council seeks a staff member with budget center responsibility, or past responsibility, to serve as a staff representative to CRC. Appointed by the President, the staff representative will serve a three-year term. All staff are invited to nominate an individual to fill this vacancy. Self-nominations are welcome as well. Send nominations to Sally Ming, <mingsa01> by Friday, Sept. 6. CRC serves as a forum for the discussion and study of major college-wide issues. It provides an opportunity for representative members of the faculty and staff to serve in an advisory role to the administration of the college, especially in matters of long-range planning, resource allocation and in the preparation of the budget.
Back to school, back to the pool
Decorah Masters Swimming is back with our fall practice schedule starting Sunday, Sept. 1. Practice will be held Sundays at 4 p.m., Tuesdays at 6 a.m., Thursdays at 6:30 p.m., and Fridays at 6 a.m.. Price is $120 for our three month season (or $50/month). Luther faculty and staff are eligible for a Luther Wellness discount. Decorah Masters is open to all Luther faculty, staff and students, as well as community members, who can comfortably swim at least a pool length freestyle. Not Quite Free Lunch Sept. 10
Join colleagues at the Not Quite Free Lunch 11:30 a.m.-1:15 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 10, in the Nobel Room, sponsored by Wellness. Boost social and emotional wellness by getting away from the typical work space and mingling with folks from across campus. Luther employee fitness classes
Sign up today for the first seven-week session of fall classes of wellness subsidized employee Yoga and Zumba classes. Details and the registration form are available on the online fitness class site. Classes are open to current employees and spouses. Email <wellness> with questions.
United Way campaign begins
United Way of Winneshiek County is excited to announce the 2019 campaign goal of $130,000 which will help support sixteen local, non-profit agencies in Winneshiek County. Because every board member is a volunteer, 100% of the money raised during campaign stays in Winneshiek County and is allocated back to the supported agencies. KATIE drop-in workshop Sept. 2
KATIE drop-in workshop 10:30 a.m.-4 p.m., Monday, Sept. 2 in Hovde. During this "come and go" working session for faculty and staff, KATIE Support Team members will be available to answer questions and help you build your 2019 Fall course sites. With hands-on assistance provided, all participants should plan to bring a laptop and some relevant course information, such as a syllabus or meeting notes.
Koru Mindfulness
Stu Johnston completed the training program and is now a certified Koru Mindfulness instructor. Funding for the training was provided by the Luther College TRIO Achievement Program. Koru Mindfulness® is an evidence-based curriculum specifically designed for teaching mindfulness, meditation, and stress management to college students and other young adults. Koru Mindfulness has also been used in age groups ranging from high school students to nursing home residents. If you have any questions feel free to contact Stu at <johnstst>.
Swimming lessons available
The Luther Swimming and Diving team is offering three sessions of swimming lessons this fall. More information is available through the sign-up form. Space is limited and these one-on-one lessons are available on a first come basis. Please contact Aaron Zander <aaron.zander> with questions.

Fall Semester Opening Convocation Sept. 5
Celebrate the start of a new academic year and welcome the class of 2023 at Opening Convocation at 9:40 a.m. Thursday, Sept. 5, in the CFL. The convocation speaker is Francisco Cantú, author of "The Line Becomes a River," the summer 2019 reading. He became a US border patrol agent, and over the next four years, he policed drug routes and smuggling corridors and tracked lost migrants across the desert. Now the author of a memoir about his experiences, he speaks with urgency, honesty and empathy about how the border wreaks violence on both sides of the line
SAC presents hypnotist Jim Wand Sept. 7
Student Activities Council presents master hypnotist Jim Wand at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 7, in the Center for Faith and Life. Wand is considered to be one of the top hypnotic entertainers in the world today. Join in on the orientation fun on September 7th and witness it for yourself. In addition to students, the event is open to the public with a $10 admission charge. Doors open at 7 p.m.

Positions
Data Entry Coordinator (.80 FTE, benefit eligible): Coordinator works 32 per week to perform extensive data entry of new student information into admissions database. Duties will include generating a number of physical communications, including acceptance letters, scholarship notifications and various letters of correspondence. Coordinator will also answer phones and perform a variety of operational tasks for the Admissions Office. Qualified candidates have a high school diploma or equivalent, are proficient in Microsoft Office Suite, and have a working knowledge of computer technology. One-year experience in a comparable office position preferred. Strong interpersonal skills and attention to detail are preferred. Supervisory experience is very helpful.

Andy Hageman published a review essay on Miguel Llanso's film, "Jesus Shows You the Way to the Highway."
Susan Schmidt attended the International Congress on Law and Mental Health, held this July in Rome, and presented on "Trauma Inflicting or Trauma Informed? Comparing Current US Policies towards Migrant Children, and towards Children Who Have Experienced Maltreatment." In addition, her book chapter on "Welcoming the Stranger: The Ethics of Policy and Practice with Migrant and Refugee Populations" was published in the Routledge Handbook on Social Work Ethics and Values (now available through the Luther library).
