ANNOUNCEMENTS

Reading and discussion group: Diversity, Civility, and the Liberal Arts

Faculty and staff are invited to continue the conversations about race, racism and anti-racism on campus through a reading and discussion group on the readings from the Council of Independent Colleges' Diversity, Civility, and the Liberal Arts Institute.

The readings can be accessed on a KATIE course site called "Diversity, Civility, and the Liberal Arts." Faculty have been automatically enrolled in the KATIE course. In order to access the readings, staff should send Courtney Schott <schoco01> a request to be added to the course.

The readings are divided into eight sets corresponding to the group's eight meetings from 9:40-10:50 a.m. on Thursdays, 9/26, 10/3, 10/10, 10/17, 10/31, 11/7, 11/14, and 11/21. The group will meet in the Borlaug Room in the Union (except for 10/17, when we will meet in the Hovde Room in Preus Library). Refreshments will be served. To register for each individual reading and discussion group meeting, go to the Dean's Office web page and scroll down to "Upcoming Events."

Thank you from the Sophomores on the Commons Committee

Thank you to everyone who contributed to making the second annual Sophomores on the Commons a success! We especially want to thank the teams from facilities services, dining services, campus programming, residence life, visual media, and multimedia for the behind the scenes support and the 100 faculty and staff volunteers who hosted sophomores at the dinner. It was exciting to see so many people from across campus come together to celebrate and support Luther sophomores.

Dr. Blackstone, professor of sociology at the University of Maine, will participate in a lunch hour book discussion facilitated by Nora Myint, WGST student, noon-1 p.m. Friday, Sept. 27 in Mott/Borlaug. The author will focus on publicly engaged gender scholarship and her new book "Childfree by Choice," where she delves into the childfree movement from its conception to today, exploring gender, race, sexual orientation, politics, environmentalism, and feminism, as she strips away the misconceptions surrounding non-parents and reveals the still radical notion that support of the childfree can lead to better lives and societies for all. The Center for Ethics and Public Engagement and WGST programs are sponsoring this event. Register online to receive a copy of the book, or drop in for conversation only if unable to read the book.

EDITORIAL COMMENT

And finally...

"September" by John Updike

The breezes taste
Of apple peel.
The air is full
Of smells to feel-
Ripe fruit, old footballs,
Burning brush,
New books, erasers,
Chalk, and such.
The bee, his hive,
Well-honeyed hum,
And Mother cuts
Chrysanthemums.
Like plates washed clean
With suds, the days
Are polished with
A morning haze.
