Inauguration Weekend Nov. 1–3

On Friday, Sept. 20, faculty and staff should have received an email invitation to the inauguration of President Jenifer K. Ward. Information regarding her inauguration is available on the inauguration website. The entire community is invited to participate in the weekend activities and no RSVP is necessary for the Saturday, Nov. 2, inauguration ceremony. Faculty are invited to process. The theme of the inauguration is "Always Becoming." Faculty and staff that did not receive the invite should contact <catherine.dyer>.

Christmas at Luther ticket notice

Current faculty, staff, emeriti and non-performing students may secure tickets online for Christmas at Luther 2019: Whom Angels Greet with Anthems Sweet starting Tuesday, Oct. 1 at 9 a.m. For detailed information, please check out the Christmas at Luther ticketing webpage. Tickets may also be secured in person at the Ticket Office. Faculty, staff and emeriti will receive an email message on Friday, Sept. 27 with the promotional code that will unlock the buying option online. Students will need to sign in to their Audience View account to claim their ticket. Priority status exists until Oct. 8, when ticket sales will open to alumni and parents of students not performing.

UPDATE–Staff Day 2019 Oct. 22

The date stays the same, but the activity is changing! Gear up for Staff Day 2019, which will now include a Minute to Win It Showdown. All staff will have the opportunity to be competitors or the best cheerleaders in the crowd. Competitors will participate in a series of 60-second kooky, creative and fabulously fun challenges.

Directory notice

Preparation for the print version of the 2019–20 Luther College faculty-staff directory has begun. Faculty and staff should review their current information in the online directory and report any changes to title, office address, office phone number or Luther email to HR, <hr>.

Windows update Oct. 1

ITS will begin issuing a major Windows update to applicable faculty/staff workstations on Oct. 1. If your workstation is affected, you will be notified in a separate email and you’ll have the option to choose when the update occurs in consultation with your supervisor. Contact the Technology Help Desk if you have questions.

Paymerang partnership in Accounts Payable

The Office for Financial Services has partnered with Paymerang to make AP disbursements, including employee reimbursements. The next time an employee submits a reimbursement request to AP, they will receive an email from [email protected] asking them to enroll to receive payments from Paymerang. Questions about enrolling should be directed to [email protected]. Questions about the college's partnership with Paymerang should be directed to Andrew Bailey, <bailan01> 387-1697. Paymerang is secure, efficient and limits the college's exposure to fraud.

Requesting suggestions for Summer Read

The Paideia Planning Committee invites your suggestions for the 2020 Summer Read. The book should be no longer than 300 pages, be accessible to incoming college students and offer rich discussion possibilities on topics that matter. Email your suggestions to [email protected].

Last call for the 2019–20 season of Lifelong Learner Seminars

Our seminars offer people the opportunity to enjoy the academic programs at the college and engage in meaningful scholarly dialogue and study. Each seminar lasts for one month (four Wednesday sessions from 9 a.m. to noon) during October, November, February and March. Total cost for each seminar is $30. The program includes morning refreshments, coffee and tea. Class size is limited. Registration deadline is Friday, Sept. 27.

Be considerate of those with fragrance sensitivities

Please help us to accommodate our co-workers who have sensitivities to various chemical-based or scented products. Human Resources asks for everyone’s cooperation in our efforts to accommodate their health concerns. Scented products such as hair spray, perfume, cologne, body sprays, air fresheners and diffused essential oils can trigger reactions such as respiratory distress, nausea, headaches and migraines. Fall Wellness chair massages

Wellness is hosting a massage therapist on campus for $20/15-minute chair massages, paid by cash, check or card at appointment or booking, from 1 to 5 p.m. every Monday afternoon! Chair massages can help reduce muscle tension, improve blood flow/circulation, increase energy-improving productivity, decrease anxiety and enhance immune system function. ITS Tip of the Month: Google Calendar "working hours"

Google Calendar recently turned on the “working hours” feature for everyone. Take a moment to review the working hours setting in your calendar and either disable it or manually set new hours. If you didn’t have specific working hours set in the past, Google tries to guess, and that guess might be wrong. Get directions online. Contact the Technology Help Desk if you have questions.

Luther College Community Music School Registration

Youth choir (Soda Club): community choir for youth in grades K–8. Soda Club meets on Mondays from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. at Decorah Lutheran from Sept. 23 to Nov. 18. The group is led by Luther professors. Group classes meet on Wednesday mornings from 8:00 to 8:45 a.m. at Decorah Lutheran Church for youth in grades 1–6. (Bus transportation is available for 1st-2nd graders). Fall session runs Oct. 9–Dec. 11. The classes are led by Luther music education students. Register online. Calling all world travelers!

Join students from the International Studies program for our open house, 9:45-10:45 a.m. Thursday, Sept. 26, in the Center for Ethics and Public Engagement, Olin 214. Students will share stories from their recent study abroad adventures, and answer questions about Luther's International Studies program, a major or minor that allows students to explore their interests in any corner of the world.

Bishop emeritus of Jordan and the Holy Land to spend a week at Luther College

Bishop Munib Younan, bishop emeritus of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Jordan and the Holy Land, will be on campus for a weeklong residency with Luther College and the Decorah community, Sept. 26–Oct. 1. Younan will give a lecture at 7 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 26, in the CFL Recital Hall, open to the public with no charge for admission. Lectures

At 7 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 25, in Valders 206, Linda LeGarde Grover, professor of American Indian studies at UMD will give a lecture on, "Sweetgrass and Storytellers: Creative Narratives of Ojibwe Women's Lives." Copies of her books will be sold at the Book Shop and at the event.

At 7 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 26, in Olin 102, David Faldet, professor of English, will be speaking on his new book, "King: A Mystery." A book signing will follow the lecture. Books will be sold before and after the event and are currently available in the Book Shop.

At 7 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 3, in Olin 102, Robert Shedinger, professor of religion, will be delivering a lecture on his new book, "The Mystery of Evolutionary Mechanisms: Darwinian Biology's Grand Narrative of Triumph and the Subversion of Religion." A book signing will follow the lecture. Books will be sold before and after the event and are currently available in the Book Shop.

You're Not Alone documentary screening and discussion Sept. 26

Everyone is invited to join Counseling Service, Active Minds and Social Work Association in viewing the documentary, "You're Not Alone" from the Kids in Crisis series. Focusing on youth mental health, the film shares the story of four young people, including one Luther College student, Barrett Poetker. Discussion will follow. Presidential Candidate Forum watch party Sept. 27

Join the Luther community for a watch party of the Presidential Candidate Forum on Mental Health taking place in Des Moines. The event from the Mental Health for US group will be live streamed Friday, Sept. 27 6–9 p.m. in Valders 206. Free pizza provided by the CEPE. Faculty Artist Series: Amy Engelsdorfer Sept. 27

Dr. Amy Engelsdorfer, assistant professor of music theory and history, will present a flute recital on Friday, Sept. 27, at 7:30 p.m., in the Jenson-Noble Recital Hall. Entitled Nevertheless, We Persist, the recital features four modern yet very accessible works by contemporary female composers. The concert is open to the public with no cost for admission. 

SAC presents ComedySportz Sept. 27

Student Activities Council is bringing ComedySportz to campus as an exciting part of the Luther Homecoming experience. This event will take place at 7:30 p.m. with doors opening at 7 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 27, in Marty's. Tickets are $10 per person, on sale through the Box Office.

Preview Day Sept. 28

Registration is still open for high school juniors and seniors to attend Luther's Preview Day event and closes at 5 p.m. Wednesday. The day includes academic and student life sessions, a campus tour and lunch. The event runs 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Center Stage Series presents Russian Renaissance Sept. 28

Russian Renaissance takes traditional folk music to the next level with modern, vibrant and enticing new sounds. Through electrifying performances of everything from tango and folk to classical and jazz, Russian Renaissance is redefining the possibilities of their traditional Russian folk instruments and captivating audiences worldwide. Local Candidate Forum Oct. 3

The Luther College and Decorah communities will have the opportunity to talk with and question the people running to represent them in local government. Luther's annual Local Candidate Forum takes place at 7 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 3, in Valders Hall of Science Room 206. Candidates for Decorah City Council, Decorah School Board and Decorah Parks and Recreation Board have been invited to attend and answer questions submitted by the audience.

Design thinking workshop Oct. 3

Students, staff, faculty and community members are invited to participate in a free design thinking workshop hosted by Destination Medical Center in Rochester, Minn. Participants in this workshop will learn the art of design thinking to address problems and create solutions in just 90 minutes. Religion, Science and Evolution–Confessions of a Darwinian Skeptic, Oct. 3

Come to the Religion Forum with Professor Bob Shedinger on Thursday, Oct. 3 at 7 p.m. in Olin 102. He will share aspects of his journey from advocate to skeptic in his new book, "The Mystery of Evolutionary Mechanisms." Shedinger will explain why it matters how we understand the nature of religious thought and what it means to be a human in a dehumanizing world. A book signing follows. Custodial Staff (1.0 FTE): General custodial responsibilities include overall appearance of assigned academic and resident hall building(s). Hours will generally be 7:00 am to 3:30 p.m., Monday through Friday. High school diploma or equivalent preferred but not required.

Web and Digital Communications Content Fellow (.75 FTE): nine-month, 40 hours per week, responsible for managing the Web Content Bureau, which is the group of roughly 6–7 student workers who help maintain the Luther College website and online advertising for the college. Bachelor’s degree required along with strong communication skills and attention to detail.
