HR updates
Open enrollment meetings
Annual open enrollment meetings will be held 3:15–4:30 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 7, and 9:15–10:30 a.m. Friday, Nov. 8, in Peace Dining Room, Dahl Centennial Union. Representatives from Marsh and McLennan Agency will be there to answer questions and explain changes to the health care plan. Please attend as you can. Watch campus mail for packets with the open enrollment booklets and an informational letter.

Office 2019 available
Office 2019 is now available for faculty/staff Windows workstations. To start the upgrade, login to help.luther.edu with your Norse Key, click on "Downloads" and select "Microsoft Office Professional Plus 2019 (Windows)." Before you click "Run Now," confirm that the correct workstation number appears in "Device to install software on." The process takes approximately 20 minutes. Contact the Technology Help Desk with questions.
Adobe CC expiration
If you receive the message that your Adobe CC product (e.g., Acrobat, Photoshop) "is using a license that is due to expire on November 30, 2019," you may ignore it. ITS is working on implementing the new Adobe licensing model and will have it in place prior to the end of November. This has already been implemented on lab/classroom/podium workstations and will be implemented soon on faculty/staff workstations. Once implemented, choose to "Sign in with an Enterprise ID," using your Luther email address. For details, visit Adobe Creative Cloud.
Luther employee fitness classes
Sign up today for the second seven-week session of fall classes of wellness-subsidized employee yoga and Zumba classes. Details and registration form are available on the online fitness class site. Classes are open to current employees and spouses. Email <wellness> with questions.
Employee chair massages
Wellness is hosting a massage therapist on campus for $20/15-minute chair massages, paid by cash, check or card at appointment or booking, from 1-5 p.m. every Monday afternoon! Chair massages can help reduce muscle tension, improve blood flow/circulation, increase energy-improving productivity, decrease anxiety and enhance immune system function. The fall of the Berlin Wall
The German Program invites the Luther and Decorah community to a commemoration of the fall of the Berlin Wall (Nov. 9, 1989). If the division of Germany had an impact on your life: Where were you when the Wall fell? Please share your story. United Way campaign continues

Center for Excellence in Learning and Teaching
A new resource for faculty is now available at Luther College. The Center for Excellence in Learning and Teaching (CELT) promotes student success by dedicating space and resources to Luther faculty for the cultivation of teaching practices. Grounded in the latest research on teaching and learning, CELT acts as a place of interdisciplinary collaboration for teachers and a resource for anything from writing rubrics to designing courses for 21st-century learners.

Row-Heyveld gives Vesterheim presentation on tattoos, symbols and social issues Oct. 29
Join Lindsey Row-Heyveld to find out how symbols intersect with the social issues of our time during the presentation "Tattoos, Medievalism, and White Nationalism" on Oct. 29 at 7 p.m. in Olin Room 102. Row-Heyveld will explore how and why fantasies of medieval Europe, especially Scandinavia, have fueled the fires of white supremacy—and what to do in response.
Jazz Combo Night in Marty's Oct. 29
Luther College Jazz Combos will perform at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 29, in Marty's. The three groups will present a wide range of selections from the jazz tradition including standards by Dizzy Gillespie, Dave Brubeck and Duke Ellington alongside more contemporary pieces by Eddie Harris and Jaco Pastorius.
Guest Jazz Recital: Chad Eby and Ariel Pocock Oct. 30
Guest jazz musicians Chad Eby, saxophone, and Ariel Pocock, piano and voice, will give a recital at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 30, in the CFL Recital Hall. The duo will perform original music and arrangements of jazz standards released on their recent album "BFFs." Eby and Pocock teach in the Miles Davis Jazz Studies Program at University of North Carolina–Greensboro. This event is funded by the Weston Noble Endowed Chair in Music through the generous support of Ervin and Phyllis Johnson, and alumni and friends of Luther College.
Residence hall trick-or-treating Oct. 31
Luther community members and their families are invited to trick-or-treat from 5:30–7:30 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 31, in the three first-year residence halls. Participating rooms will be identified by a pumpkin on the door. There will be crafts in the Brandt Hall Lounge, cookie decorating in the Olson Hall Main Lounge and games in Ylvisaker.
Day of the Dead Oct. 31
Latines Unides welcomes the Luther College and Decorah community to experience Day of the Dead from 6-9 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 31, in the North Gym of Regents Center. Day of the Dead is an important cultural holiday and celebration for many Latin American families as it is a day to remember friends and relatives who have passed on. The event will feature Latin American food for sale, live performances, face-painting, raffles and more. Latines Unides hopes that through hosting this event, they can share their heritage, give Luther and Decorah community members a space to recognize and celebrate the holiday and educate participants about Latino culture.
Inauguration event: Luther Agora Nov. 1
The Agora was the ancient Athenian marketplace of ideas. Join 50 faculty and their student collaborators for informal, invigorating conversation about their research and creative work in progress. From 3-5 p.m. Friday, Nov. 1, in the Valders concourse. Refreshments provided.
Inaugural Night on the Town Nov. 1
President Jenifer K. Ward encourages everyone to join in the inauguration celebration Friday night in downtown Decorah during an "Inaugural Night on the Town." Friday evening, Nov. 1, downtown shops, restaurants and venues will be open for all to enjoy, and special entertainment is planned.
'The Notebooks of Leonardo da Vinci' Nov. 3
Luther College is among a collection of prestigious ensembles to perform "The Notebooks of Leonard da Vinci" at 4 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 3, in the CFL Main Hall. The performance, described as a multi-media symphony, includes both choral-orchestral work and video projections. Preceding the concert, there will be a lecture by the composer, Jocelyn Hagen, and Amy Weldon, professor of English, at 3 p.m. in the CFL Recital Hall. The performance will conclude with a concert by Luther College Collegiate Chorale and the Decorah Chorale, joined by instrumentalists from the Luther faculty, student body and surrounding community.
'Decoding the Driftless' screening and Q&A with producer Nov. 5
"Decoding the Driftless," an award-winning adventure documentary film about the Driftless Region, will be screened 7–8:15 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 5, in Olin 102. A brief Q&A with George Howe, the producer of the film, will follow the 60-minute film. The screening is open to the public with no charge for admission.
Guest lecture: Daoud Nassar, 'We Refuse to Be Enemies' Nov. 7
Daoud Nassar is the founder of the Tent of Nations (TON), a peace center located on his family's 100-acre working farm near Bethlehem in the West Bank. At 7 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 7, in the CRH, Nassar will describe his family's experiences with the Israeli government and private developers who wish to take control of the farm to build additional Jewish settlements. His visit is sponsored by the ELCA Peace Not Walls Working Group, the Friends of TON North America, and the CEPE.
'That's Grieg!' exhibit meet the artist event Nov. 8
Robyn Sand Anderson '79 received the Southwest Minnesota Arts Council's 2018 Individual Artist Grant with the McKnight Foundation to travel to Bergen, Norway, to immerse herself in the home, music and environment of 19th-century composer Edvard Grieg. Using that inspiration, Sand Anderson created interpretations of color, texture and movement that capture the incredible beauty of Norway. The exhibit opened Oct. 25 in the Upstairs Gallery of the CFL and closes Nov. 22. Meet the artist from 6–7 p.m. Friday, Nov. 8, at the gallery before the Des Moines Symphony Orchestra performs Grieg's Piano Concerto in A Minor at 7:30 p.m.
CSS: Des Moines Symphony Orchestra Nov. 8
The Des Moines Symphony Orchestra travels to Luther's Center for Faith and Life to pay homage to northeast Iowa's rich cultural heritage. Their program features world-renowned Canadian pianist Jon Kimura Parker and includes, among other pieces, the iconic Piano Concerto in A Minor by Edvard Grieg and Symphony No. 8 in G Major by Antonín Dvorák. Texts and Issues Lecture: 'Education and the Ho-Chunk: Resistance and Resilience' Nov. 12
David Faldet and Anna Peterson will present the second lecture of the 2019 Paideia Texts and Issues series on the theme "Resistance and Resilience." They will focus on aspects of the history of the Winnebago/Ho-Chunk removal, a study of resistance that often forced choices between physical survival and cultural survival. The lecture will take place at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 12, in the CFL Recital Hall. Reception to follow in Qualley Lounge.

Storm Bailey presented a paper on "College as Interfaith Activity" at the 13th Symposium on Faith and Culture, sponsored by the Institute for Faith and Learning at Baylor University. The Symposium was held concurrently with the 29th national meeting of the Lilly Fellows Program in Humanities and the Arts, Oct. 18-20.
Kristy Gould presented research at the International Canine Science Conference in Phoenix, AZ, Oct. 18-20. The project, "Impact of encouragement and handler familiarity on pet dogs' behavior during an unsolvable task: Gazing for permission or gazing for help?" was co-authored by Jacob Noble '19 and colleagues at Knox College.
Todd Green gave an invited presentation for a conference sponsored by the University of Notre Dame's Keough School of Global Affairs in Washington, DC, on Oct. 18. The presentation was titled "Islamophobia and the Geopolitics of Representing Religion." He also gave lectures at the All Dulles Area Muslim Society in Sterling, VA, on Oct. 18, and Shenandoah University in Wincester, VA, on Oct. 21.
Gereon Kopf's "Emptiness, Multiverses, and the Conception of a Multi-Entry Philosophy" was published in the APA Newsletter on Asian and Asian-American Philosophies vol. 19, no. 1.
The UC Berkley magazine "Greater Good" covered the research on forgiveness, sleep, and health conducted by Loren Toussaint, Alyssa Cheadle '08, Andrew Gall, and David Williams.
