November Staff Meetings

The monthly staff meetings will be held 2–3 p.m.Wednesday, Nov. 13, and 9–10 a.m. Thursday, Nov. 14. Both meetings are in Peace Dining Room. Departments are asked to coordinate attendance between the Wednesday and Thursday sessions so that everyone is able to attend. Inside Money: Managing Income and Debt Workshop–hosted by TIAA

Everyone talks about a budget, but how many of us actually make and stick to one? Most people have some debt, but how many understand its effects? Let TIAA show you the real impact of both—and help you understand how your money can work for you. TIAA's workshop leader will discuss the importance of cash-flow and how to use it while focusing on how you look at saving and spending. Not Quite Free Lunch Nov. 12

Join colleagues at the Not Quite Free Lunch 11:30 a.m.–1:15 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 12, in the Nobel Room, sponsored by Wellness. Boost social and emotional wellness by getting away from the typical work space and mingling with folks from across campus. The menu is herb grilled chicken thigh, spinach and caramelized shallots, Moroccan carrot salad, vegetable quinoa and dessert. The charge is $5, payable by cash, check or Luther ID. Hickory Ridge Woods savanna restoration

Informational session 4:30-5 p.m. Friday, Nov. 15, in Valders 262. Luther actively manages our natural areas to maintain their resilience and ecological health. Contractors will begin work on a large scale tree thinning in the area above the big red barn to promote our native oak savanna. Work will begin Monday, Nov. 18, if weather conditions permit. Vennehjem Path will be closed to pedestrians Nov. 18–20, when active work is being conducted. Contact Molly McNicoll <mcnimo01> for more information.

Sophomore Study Away Scholarships awarded

On Wednesday, Oct. 30, the Luther College Center for Global Learning and Center for Sustainable Communities hosted the Sophomore Study Away Scholarship Giveaway during which three sophomores were chosen at random to receive a $1,000 scholarship to go towards their future study away experience. Those students were Rachelle Sullivan, Rebekah Lazzeroni and Jessi Labenski.

Green Bandana Project starting at Luther

Students wanting to identify themselves as a safe person, willing to talk about mental health will wear a lime green bandana on their backpack. Someone experiencing mental health concerns could talk with them and receive resources or simply see that the support exists. To participate or learn more visit the tables from 5–7 p.m. Nov. 11–15 outside of Marty's or after the Kevin Hines event. Sponsored by Active Minds and Residence Life.

Decorah Community School District thanks Luther athletics for supporting students

The Decorah Community School District issued a public letter on Nov. 3 thanking Luther College athletic teams and staff for their ongoing support of area students. The letter gives examples of times when Luther athletes and staff go above and beyond to make a difference in young lives including reading with students during Reading Month, joining recess where athletes serve as role models, demonstrating what good sportsmanship is about, volunteering at family and community events and assisting with school mentoring programs. 

United Way Campaign continues

As a community, we've raised $7,317 of our $13,850 goal. Continue to return donations to HR, and help us support Winneshiek County families and individuals. We have a few prizes to draw for including a t-shirt from the Book Shop, a 30-minute chair massage and Not Quite Free Lunch for you and five friends. Donate any amount and be entered to win. Congratulations to recent winners Lee Zook and Eric Baack who won Peace Brunch tickets.

What are you shipping?

In an effort to provide a safe shipping experience packages being processed and shipped through the Mail Center will require a shipping declaration form to be filled out. The form is available at the Mail Center, at the mail stops around campus and will be on the Mail Center website. We are asking that this form be filled out ahead of time when possible. Pre-labeled packages with postage already applied will not be required to fill out this form, such as a RMA where you have instructions and labels provided by the manufacturer. Leadership Project interviews

We are bringing attention to any participants willing to be interviewed discussing interfaith marriage/families. This interview features questions about different religions that have had an impact within a marriage/family. This project entails an understanding on conflicts that affect interfaith marriage/families and family dynamics and how this can be perceived within the Luther community. The deadline of interviews will be Thursday, Nov. 20. Please contact <brun04> or <mouach02>.

Order Thanksgiving baked goods from the Luther Bakery

Let the Norse Culinary Team make your pies, rolls and side dishes for your Thanksgiving meal. Place orders at luther.edu/dining/submit/holiday/ by Wednesday, Nov. 20, and pick up by noon Wednesday, Nov. 27, from the Dining Services Office. It's that easy!

Extra office supplies

The Office for Financial Services has an excess supply of inter-campus envelopes of all sizes, paperclips and binders. If anyone is in need please contact Admin. Assistant Amy Wagner at ext. 1015, email <wagnam01>, or stop at our office to pick some up.

Peace Scholar information session Nov. 12

Faculty and staff are asked to encourage sophomores and juniors interested in peace, conflict and dialogue studies to attend an information session about the Peace Scholar program 9:45–10:45 a.m. Tuesday, Nov. 12, in Olin 214. Three Peace Scholars alumni will discuss their experiences in the program. Each year, two Luther students are selected to spend six weeks at the Nansen Center for Peace and Dialogue in Lillehammer and the University of Oslo Summer School.  

Flu vaccines Nov. 12

Flu vaccine protects you and your Luther family! Encourage students to get a free flu shot 10 a.m.–noon Tuesday, Nov. 12, in Williams Lounge in the Union! Health Services will partner with Luther nursing students to provide another opportunity to get yourself vaccinated! Luther College Women's Club to meet Nov. 19

Study abroad in Tanzania will be the focus Tuesday, Nov. 19, when Luther faculty member Lori (Van Gerpen) Stanley '80, Luther staff member Emily Neal, and Luther students Kari Preus '21 and Nick Lembezeder '21 present "Tanzania: People, Parks, and Pastoralism" at the Luther College Women's Club meeting. The meeting takes place at 1:30 p.m. in Peace Dining Room, Dahl Centennial Union. Shuttle service from the Decorah pool lot leaves at 1:10 p.m.

Children's bargain book sale
Nov. 18-22 stop in the Book Shop for our annual sale of children's books and young adult books ranging from $1-$6. This is a great way to start your holiday shopping and future teachers this is a great way to start your own library for your future students. The earlier you stop in the better the chance to find your perfect book.

Book signing Nov. 19
Meet Kevin Hines after his lecture on Wednesday, Nov. 19, in the Main Gym of Regents Center. The lecture starts at 7 p.m. with a book signing to follow in the lobby. His book "Cracked Not Broken" is available for purchase in the Book Shop and will be available at the event.
