Chapel this week

Built into the class schedule and rhythm of life at Luther, chapel is a time for the community to gather for song, reflection and fellowship at 10:30 a.m. Monday, Wednesday and Friday in the CFL Main Hall. Faculty, staff, students and guests serve as speakers, musicians and artists.

Kevin Hines presents '#BeHereTomorrow' Nov. 19

In 2000, Kevin Hines survived an attempt to commit suicide by jumping from the Golden Gate Bridge. In the years since, he's become a best-selling author, global speaker, and award-winning documentary filmmaker. Hines will share his remarkable message of hope, healing, and recovery at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 19, in the Regents Center main gym. The lecture is open to the public with no charge for admission. Sponsored by Luther College Counseling Service, Active Minds, and Center for Ethics and Public Engagement. 

Varsity Band and Wind and Percussion concert on Nov. 19

At 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 19, in the CFL, more than 80 members of the Varsity Band will play "Gavorkna Fanfare" by Jack Stamp, "Sunlight" by Pat Metheny/S. Primatic, "Africa: Ceremony, Song and Ritual" by Robert W. Smith, "Suite of Old American Dances" by Robert Russell Bennett and "Army of the Nile" by Kenneth J. Alford/Frederick Fennell. The Wind and Percussion Ensemble, with more than 55 students, will be performing "Scenes from the Louvre" by Norman Dello Joio, "English Dances" by Maurice Johnstone/Malcolm Arnold and "Coat of Arms" by George Kenny. The performance is open to the public with no charge for admission.

Philharmonia concert Nov. 20

At 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 20, in the CFL, the 47 student members of the Luther College Philharmonia, under the direction of Philip Borter, will present a fall concert featuring Mannheim Sinfonia in G major by Johann Stamitz and Symphony No. 1 in C major by Ludwig V. Beethoven. The concert concludes with Czech Suite, Op. 39 by Antonin Dvorak. The performance is open to the public with no charge for admission.

Free 'Question, Persuade, Refer' training Nov. 21

Want to know how to respond to someone experiencing suicidal thoughts? Counseling Service is offering a free QPR training, open to community members, 9:45-10:45 a.m. Thursday, Nov. 21, in Loyalty Hall Room 10. Question, Persuade, Refer (QPR) is a nationally used training, which helps participants identify signs of crisis, teaches how to question about suicidal thoughts appropriately, persuade them to seek help, and how to make a referral. Phi Beta Kappa Visiting Scholar: Dan Simon, 'Toward a General Model of Cognitive Bias' Nov. 21

Dr. Dan Simon, Richard L. and Maria B. Crutcher professor of law and psychology at University of Southern California, will present the public lecture "Toward a General Model of Cognitive Bias" at 5:30 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 21, in Olin 102. Dr. Simon, author of "Doubt: The Psychology of the Criminal Justice Process," joins us as part of the Phi Beta Kappa Visiting Scholar Program. The lecture is free and open to the public. Chamber Orchestra concert Nov. 21

At 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 21, in the CFL, the Luther College Chamber Orchestra, with conductor Daniel Baldwin, will perform a fall concert with works by Joseph Haydn and Samuel Barber, including a 1938 prose poem by James Agee and a vocal performance by faculty voice instructor, Rachel Storlie, soprano. The performance is open to the public with no charge for admission.

CSS: Nobuntu Nov. 22

Center Stage Series presents "Nobuntu," a highly acclaimed a capella quintet from Zimbabwe, on Friday, Nov 22. Vibrant, dazzling, and immersive, "Nobuntu" celebrates Afro jazz, gospel, and traditional Zimbabwean music. Concert Band concert Nov. 24

The Luther College Concert Band, conducted by Joan deAlbuquerque, will be giving a fall concert at 4 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 24 in the CFL. The performance is open to the public with no charge for admission.

'Tattoos for health: The future of smart tattoos' Nov. 24

Have you ever considered the possibility that a tattoo could help charge a pacemaker or detect harmful UV light or even medical problems in your body? Luther alumnus Carson Bruns has. Bruns '08, Luther graduate with degrees in chemistry and religion, will present "Tattoos for health: The future of smart tattoos" at 7 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 24 in Valders Hall of Science room 206. The presentation is open to the public with no charge for admission. A reception will follow.

New Community Forum for Public Conversation Nov. 26

Representatives from the city government, Luther College, Decorah Police Department and Decorah Community Schools will be available for an exchange of ideas and views, comments, and questions and answers on various local issues. The main goal is to provide the public with an opportunity to interact with community officials and engage in discussion of issues impacting the community.

The next meeting is 5-6 p.m.Tuesday, Nov. 26. This meeting will be held on Luther College campus at Gjerset House. Celebration for Pastor Mike Blair

We invite the Luther community to join us in a celebration of Pastor Mike Blair on Wednesday, Nov. 20. Mike will preach in chapel at 10:30 a.m. in the CFL Main Hall and a reception will be held from 2–4 p.m. in Peace Dining Room. Mike has served as college pastor for 29 years. He and his wife Sue have accepted a new call at Bartel's Retirement Community in Waverly, IA. If you are unable to attend, but have written or video sentiments you would like to share with Mike and Sue, please send them to Tricia at <faith>.

Update on Tabita Green

Thank you to those who have reached out with donations, assistance and prayers for Tabita and Todd Green during Tabita's treatments for pancreatic cancer. You can learn more on her CaringBridge page. She is currently doing daily radiation treatments in Rochester, and if you would be willing to drive a day or more, please contact Tabita at <[email protected]>.  Other questions can be directed to Lori Ostlie 387-2160 or <ostlielo> in the Religion Department.

Sympathy

To Amy Wrightsman and her family on the death of her brother, Dennis Mueller, of DeWeitt, Iowa, who passed away Nov. 11. A celebration of life open house was held Saturday, Nov. 16.
