Christmas at Luther parking restrictions
In order to accommodate the large number of visitors anticipated for Christmas at Luther, the following parking restrictions will go into effect starting at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 4. These restrictions will remain in effect until 4 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 8, at which time we will return to the usual lot designations.
The general parking areas of the Library, Jenson-Noble and City Pool lots will be reserved for visitors. Students should move their vehicles from these lots to either the Regents Center or Farwell lots. Faculty and staff may park in the Jenson, Library and Sampson Hoffland lots provided they move by 5:30 p.m. on Thursday, Friday and Saturday and 10 a.m. on Sunday unless attending the performance.
Exception: Vehicles displaying a commuter, Baker or college apartment sticker may park in the gravel city pool lot provided they vacate the spaces before 4 p.m. Thursday through Saturday and 10 a.m. on Sunday.
The Faculty/Staff parking area by Valders will be reserved for handicapped parking. Alternative parking includes the roadway from Sampson Hoffland to the main gate, Regents Center and Farwell lots. Starting at 5 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 5, through Sunday, Dec. 8, the lots on the east and west side of the CFL will also be designated for handicapped parking only.
Your cooperation with these changes is appreciated. Vehicles found to be in violation of these special event restrictions are subject to fine.
Holiday party
Luther College invites staff, faculty and emeriti to join in the holiday festivities 4–6 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 19, for the holiday party. The menu will include pizza, salad, dessert and soft drinks. Wine and beer will be available for purchase. We ask all staff and faculty to check their email inbox and spam folder for an electronic invitation to complete the RSVP. Gluten-free and dairy-free options will be available. Questions may be directed to Sally Ming in the President's Office at 387-1527 or <mingsa01>.
Annual Staff Christmas coffee (in lieu of monthly staff meeting)
Staff are invited to a Christmas coffee 9–10 a.m. Thursday, Dec. 12, in Peace Dining Room. This event is in lieu of the December staff meeting. Please plan to attend! We hope most offices will be able to close so that all can enjoy an hour of fun, great treats, and conversation.
Library holiday book sale
Preus Library is holding a special Holiday Book Sale Dec. 1–7, with hundreds of hardcover and paperback books available for purchase. Prices will decline daily.
Not Quite Free Lunch Dec. 10
Join colleagues at the Not Quite Free Lunch 11:30 a.m.–1:15 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 10, in the Nobel Room, sponsored by Wellness. Boost social and emotional wellness by getting away from the typical work space and mingling with folks from across campus. The menu is the baked potato bar, salad and dessert. The charge is $5, payable by cash, check or Luther ID. Contact <wellness> with questions.
J-term strengths exploration
Whether you are leading a trip or staying on campus, the Strengths-Based Servant Leadership Program is willing and excited to strengthen relationships and deepen the conversation. Contact <strengths> to share your course objectives and explore how a strengths workshop might compliment them.
United Way Campaign wraps up
Thank you, everyone, who has supported United Way of Winneshiek County this year. Congratulations to Anna Peterson who won the final prize, a Not Quite Free Lunch ticket for herself and five friends. As a community, we have raised $10,374. Last year, the Luther community raised $12,956.96. Donations are appreciated and can be returned to HR or mailed to United Way at the following address PO Box 165, Decorah, IA 52101.

Caucus Competence Dec. 9
Iowa is famous for voicing its presidential candidate preferences via caucus. Caucusing happens in Iowa on Feb. 3. Come and learn about the process, the procedures for both parties and figure out whether it's best to vote in Decorah or your hometown. Political science professors Carly Foster and Mike Engelhardt will lead the discussion. Pizza will be served. The event will be held 11 a.m.–noon Monday, Dec. 9, in CFL Qualley Lounge. Sponsored by the CEPE.
CEPE Pop-Up Programming: Unrest in Bolivia Dec. 9
Join recent Luther graduate Becca Buse '19 to discuss the recent unrest in Bolivia. Buse, an international studies major, has been working for an NGO in Bolivia since graduation, but had to return to the U.S. two weeks ago because of the recent violent protests. She will share her experiences and her thoughts on the future. Open to the public with no charge for admission, 4-5 p.m. Monday, Dec. 9, in Valders 262.
Kwanzaa celebration Dec. 14
The annual Kwanzaa celebration will be held 11:30 a.m.–2 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 14, in Peace Dining Room. The South African gospel group 29:11 will be performing. The price for the lunch and program will be $12.50 (children 6-10 are half price; children 5 and under are free). Tickets may be purchased at the Luther College Box Office.

Position openings
Custodial staff position (1.0 FTE): Hours will generally be 4 a.m.-noon Monday–Friday. Must be able to read sufficiently to follow policies and procedures, ability to mix appropriate chemical dilution ratios and understand directions for use. Also required is computer skills for accessing the college's web-based systems. High school diploma or equivalent preferred.

Kirk Larsen, with former students Emma Stivers '17 and Jacob Wittman '12, published a paper titled "A comparison of adult butterfly communities on remnant and planted prairies in Northeast Iowa" in the November 2019 issue of Journal of the Lepidopterists' Society.
