TIAA counseling sessions
TIAA announces individual virtual counseling sessions 8:30 a.m.-3:30 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 28, 2021. Space is limited.  Register online at www.TIAA.org/schedulenow or by calling 800-732-8353 between 7 a.m.-7 p.m., Mon. – Fri.

Sign up for W-2s online
All students, faculty and staff are encouraged to sign up to receive electronic W-2s using the link in the employee section of norsehub.luther.edu. Electronic W-2s can be accessed from anywhere and not easily lost or stolen. Those that chose the electronic option for 2019 need not do it again for 2020. More detailed instructions and additional information can be found by clicking the W-2 Options link on the HR website.

Tax withholding estimator
Luther employees are encouraged to use the Tax Withholding Estimator to review their withholding for 2021. This review is especially important for anyone who faced an unexpected tax bill or a penalty when filing a 2019 return or who experienced a major life change in 2020. Updated W-4 forms should be submitted to the payroll office. Contact <payroll> with questions.

Portrait/passport photo day Jan. 14

The next portrait and passport photo day is 9 a.m.-4 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 14. Portraits are free, passport photos are $5 (cash/check only). Photos are taken in Union 213. No appointment necessary. If you have any questions, please email <photobureau>.

Campus Social Media Group meeting Jan. 19

A Campus Social Media Group has been convened to provide support and direction for administrators of Luther College institutional social media accounts, as outlined in the Luther College Social Media Policy. Our next meeting will take place at 11:30 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 19. Administrators that the Marketing and Communications team are already aware of have received an email regarding this meeting. Staff and faculty who have not received an email and are managing a Luther office/department social media account should contact Megan Schwenneker <schwme04> to receive meeting details.

Reminder of employee wellness survey

The Wellness Program would like to learn more about the impact of the pandemic on Luther employees via a confidential survey, which employees received via email. Results of the survey will aid the Wellness Program in providing wellness related opportunities and resources to support campus, and provide opportunities for students to engage in research with Loren Toussaint and Chandra Jennings. The survey will remain open until Jan. 29 for those employees still wanting to participate.

Caring for God's creation

As one of the ELCA's 26 colleges and universities, Luther College is called to care for God's creation. Several members of the Luther community have joined the local chapter of Citizens' Climate Lobby, which is working to address climate change in a bipartisan and respectful manner. An ELCA faith action team is being formed as part of Citizens Climate Lobby. To learn more, contact Jim Martin-Schramm, 387-1251, <marschja>.

From the Risk Management and Safety Committee

Success! Luther has been able to supply each of the major buildings on campus with AED units. In an effort to identify employees who are already trained in the use of AED's, CPR and First Aid or those who are interested in being trained,  Amy Wrightsman will be reaching out on a building to building basis. Please watch for the communication coming to your location soon.

Luther College Music available for streaming and downloading

Luther College Music is now available on Spotify, Amazon Music, Apple Music, and iTunes. Listen to the 2019 and 2020 Christmas at Luther albums as well as some past ensemble albums featuring the Concert Band, Jazz Orchestra, Nordic Choir, and Symphony Orchestra. Happy listening! 

'Me and White Supremacy' working groups for faculty and staff

CELT is sponsoring a second round of working groups for all faculty and staff who are willing to put in hard, self-reflective work to examine their own biases and their own complicity with white suprematism. Groups will begin Feb. 8 and end March 8. Meeting times will vary. Last call for applications: CEPE faculty research fellowship

The CEPE invites applications from any tenure-track faculty for a two-year Research Fellowship. The fellowship provides one course release per year to allow the Fellow time to conduct academic research or discipline-specific work related to the mission of the CEPE. Please see CEPE website for details and application instructions. Application deadline is Jan. 25, 2021.

Virtual student recital: Andrew Moore, guitar Jan. 16

Andrew Moore '21, guitar, will be performing his senior recital at 12 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 16. The recital will include works from Charles Mingus, Pastorious, Paul Vidal, and John Scofield. This event will be live-streamed. Andrew is a student of Chris Olson.

Virtual student recital: William Peterson, baritone Jan. 17

William Peterson '21, baritone, in collaboration with Rachael Brolin, will perform a senior recital at 12 p.m. Sunday, Jan 17. The program includes works by Handel, Schubert, Poulenc, Fauré, Donizetti, and Quilter. This event will be live-streamed. William is a student of Rachel Storlie.

Martin Luther King Jr. Day Lecture: Dr. Bettina Love Jan. 18

Dr. Bettina L. Love, an author, activist and public speaker will give Luther College's 2021 Martin Luther King Jr. Day Lecture at 4 p.m. on Monday, Jan. 18. Love's lecture, "Living a Hip Hop and Abolitionist Life: Resistance, Creativity, Hip Hop Civics Ed, Intersectionality and Black Joy," will educate viewers about racial violence, oppression, intersectional justice and how to make sustainable community change. The viewing link for this lecture, which is free and open to the public, can be found on luther.edu/events.

'Xenophobia in America,' a conversation with scholar Erika Lee Jan. 21

In the popular imagination, the United States is conceived of as a nation that welcomes immigrants. Yet as award-winning author and historian Erika Lee demonstrates, it is also a nation with a long history of xenophobia. Join Dr. Lee in conversation with Todd Green, Evelyn Montoya '23, and Maria Leitz, co-founder of CARE (Collective Action for Racial Equity) at 7 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 21. Position openings

Custodial Weekend Float (.75 FTE): 30 hours per week, benefit eligible position. Typical work schedule is Thursday and Friday noon-6:30 p.m., and Saturday and Sunday from 6 a.m.-3:30 p.m. High school diploma or equivalent is preferred but not required. A valid driver's license is required. Must have good time management and organizational skills, basic computer knowledge, and ability to read sufficiently to follow instructions and mix appropriate chemical dilution ratios.

Workstation Support Specialist: Seeking an information professional with passion and interest for providing workstation support for faculty, staff, labs and classrooms on campus. The workstation support specialist is a member of our User Services and Workstation Support teams within Information Technology Services (ITS) who support, maintain, monitor, update, troubleshoot and repair desktop computer systems, software and applications. The successful candidate will bring experience in building images for the Windows and Macintosh operating systems; close attention to detail; strong communication and interpersonal skills; the ability to think and work independently and to adapt in an engaging and developing environment; and will display advanced analytical and problem-solving skills. We prefer candidates with an associate or bachelor's degree in computer science or a related information- based field.

ARTICLES, CREATIONS, HONORS

Wanda Deifelt's sermon "God's peace for a world in pieces" was published in a collection by Societas Homiletica, titled "Preaching the Fear of God in a Fear-Filled World" (Zurich: LIT-Verlag, 2020).

A series of articles by Ellen Drewes-Stoen will be published in a monthly newsletter of the National Assn of Dog Obedience Instructors (NADOI). These articles focus on pedagogy. Forty years of teaching techniques, methods courses, and lessons learned from students at Luther College are being integrated into strategies for instructors who teach dog training classes.

Andy Hageman published the essay "Enter the Neighbour: An Inland Empire Mise-en-scène Metonymy" in the online open-access journal "Mise-en-scène | The Journal of Film & Visual Narration."

Gereon Kopf's essay "Does AI have Buddha-nature? Reflections on the Metaphysical, Soteriological, and Ethical Dimensions of Including Humanoid Robots in Religious Rituals from one Mahāyāna Buddhist Perspective" was published in  "Culturally Sustainable Social Robotics—Proceedings of Robophilosophy 2020" (Amsterdam: IOS Press, 2020).

Gregory Peterson performed a virtual holiday organ recital in collaboration with John Stender '12 on the Festival of Music series at First Presbyterian Church, Rochester, Minn. on Dec. 20. The performance is available on Youtube, search: FPC Rochester MN.
