Being Community updates

Student emergency relief payments
Luther College will be using a mix of Coronavirus Response and Relief Supplemental Appropriations (CRRSA) Act funds and institutional funds to issue emergency relief payments to all currently enrolled students. Students with more demonstrated financial need will receive more assistance for any component of Luther's cost of attendance or for emergency costs that arise due to the pandemic. Graduates, non-degree seeking students, high school students taking PSEO, and those auditing classes will not receive emergency relief payments.

HR update

Employee Appreciation Day for 2021 is celebrated/observed on Friday, March 5. Employee Appreciation Day is held on the first Friday in March allowing management to show thanks and reward their workers for their hard work throughout the year. As an expression of the college's gratitude, we will be closing the college on Friday, March 5. Thank you for your continued service and dedication to our students and Luther College. Employees regularly scheduled to work on March 5 will be asked to record their normal number of work hours as "holiday." Similar to other days the college is closed, there may be a small handful of employees that will need to work. They will be asked to take the time off on a different day before May 31. Please take time for rest and relaxation.

TRIO report to the Luther community

Eighty-six percent of the 186 Luther students served by the TRIO Achievement Program last year either earned their degree or are persisting toward graduation. During the 2015-2020 grant funding cycle, TRIO student contacts totaled over 28,000 and grant aid exceeded $165,000. Academic support, financial support, and emotional support are consistently cited by TRIO participants as key program benefits. For details, we invite you to check out our latest report!

Compost collection paused until Feb. 4

Luther compost collection locations will be closed for Term Break beginning on Jan. 26. Compost collection will resume on Feb. 4. If you are not able to save your compostable items in a closed container until re-opening, please deposit compostable items in the "landfill" container. If you need a compost container, contact <sustainability>.

Library books are due

January 26 is the due date for books checked out from the Main Stacks by faculty and staff on or before Friday, Jan. 22. Books checked out by faculty and staff may be renewed online or by emailing <library>. The new due date is May 7, the last day of classes for the spring semester. Books that have already been renewed three times (two years) will not be renewed again; rather you will need to bring these books in physically to the circulation desk to have them checked in and then out again to "re-start the clock." View your account online by clicking on "Library Account" on the Preus Library website.

Order Valentine's Day treats

Give a treat to a friend, your kids or that special someone. Order giant heart-shaped chocolate chip cookies with a personalized message or a dozen cookies with all the fixings to frost at home. Order online by Friday, Feb. 5, and pick up in the Dining Services office Friday, Feb. 12. Place your order on the Dining Services website.

'Green-N-Go' containers at Grab-N-Go

Beginning Feb. 4, all meals served at Luther's Grab-N-Go window will be packaged in reusable "Green-N-Go" containers. From now on, no disposable containers will be available at the Grab-N-Go window. Diners should put food leftovers in the compost, then return green containers within 36 hours to designated receptacles on the Union ground and first floors. All "Green-N-Go" containers will be washed and sanitized before being reused. Watch for "Green-N-Go" signs in the Union.

Ethnic Arts 2021 canceled

The Center for Intercultural Engagement and Student Success would like to announce that Ethnic Arts Festival 2021 is canceled. We hope to reschedule the event for fall 2021.  

CEPE book group: 'The Grid'

Join the Winneshiek Energy District in reading Gretchen Bakke's "The Grid: The Fraying Wires Between Americans and Our Energy Future," a book about the history, science, and politics surrounding the electricity grid. Discussions times are Feb. 16 and March 2, 9:45 a.m. or 6 p.m. Free books offered by CEPE. Students are especially encouraged to join, but the group is open to all. Sign up on the CEPE website.

CEPE book group: 'The Tyranny of Merit'

Join us in exploring how we think about "merit" in our country. College-educated Americans have more economic stability and political power than ever. Has this contributed to polarization? Does American society, particularly the Democratic Party, need to re-think "merit"? Read "The Tyranny of Merit: What's Become of the Common Good?" by philosopher Michael Sandel, and discuss in a group facilitated by Storm Bailey and Eric Baack on Zoom, 4-5 p.m. on Tuesdays, March 2, 9 and 16 (if needed). Peterson, as well as the first quarter Wednesday chapel series by faculty and students of Biology 151. Hard copies are limited; each department will have several to share, but if you need one, please let the Agora staff know at <agora>.

Sympathy

To Derek Hartl on the death of his wife, Chris Cronick Hartl, who passed away on Jan. 19 after a courageous battle with Lupus.

To the friends and family of Charles G. Hendrickson, builder of the first college pipe organ for Koren Hall, who died at his home in Saint Peter, Minn. in December. The instrument was built in 1971 for the Koren reading room which had been converted for use as the College Chapel and recital hall prior to the construction of the CFL. The instrument was renewed in 1978 for installation in the Sundt Organ Studio, Jenson/Noble, where it was employed once again as a teaching, practice and recital instrument. After this instrument, his first major installation, Mr. Hendrickson went on to a noteworthy career as a prominent builder of pipe organs throughout America.    

Position openings

Associate Athletic Trainer (.83 FTE): Position to assist the Head Athletic Trainer with the responsibilities of managing the athletic training services with the understanding of current NCAA Dlll and NATA policies and procedures. Responsibilities include assisting with coordination and scheduling of athletic training coverage, conducting institutional drug testing for student-athletes, teaching nutrition classes, and serving as a preceptor in ATEP. Duties will also include involvement in the college's COVID testing program. Master's degree in athletic training or related field required, two years of collegiate experience and prior teaching experience and John Hopkins Contract Tracing Certification preferred. Successful candidate will possess, or be in the process of acquiring, an Iowa Athletic Training Licensure.

Financial Aid Counselor: Position will be responsible for advising students and parents about financing their Luther education, preparing financial aid offers, and serving as a liaison with both the Center for Global Learning and the Luther College Education Department. B.A. or B.S. degree is required. Three years' experience in a financial aid office is desirable, along with the ability to manage multiple, detail-intensive projects simultaneously. Exceptional verbal and written communication and customer service skills are essential.
