HR update

Employee Appreciation Day for 2021 is celebrated/observed on Friday, March 5. Employee Appreciation Day is held on the first Friday in March allowing management to show thanks and reward their workers for their hard work throughout the year. As an expression of the college's gratitude, we will be closing the college on Friday, March 5. Thank you for your continued service and dedication to our students and Luther College. Employees regularly scheduled to work on March 5 will be asked to record their normal number of work hours as "holiday." Similar to other days the college is closed, there may be a small handful of employees that will need to work. They will be asked to take the time off on a different day before May 31. Please take time for rest and relaxation.

Paideia summer reading

The Paideia Program is excited to announce the 2021 summer read, "The Vanishing Half" by Brit Bennett. This page-turner of a novel puts systemic racism under a sharp lens through the story of a Black mother and twin daughters, one of whom decides to pass as white. The author will present the convocation address and a Q&A session Sept. 1-2. Stay tuned for more information, and for copies to be available at the Book Shop.

Melin Scholarship for study in Africa 2021-22

Do you have students interested in studying abroad in Africa during the 2021-22 academic year? Encourage them to apply for the Melin Scholarship, which provides $7,500 to support a student's study abroad experience in Africa, with preference given to students who wish to study in sub-Saharan Africa. To receive an application form, students should email Todd Green, Interim Director of International Studies, at <greeto02>. If students have particular questions about the scholarship, they should email Elizabeth Finanger in the Center for Global Learning at <finaeliz>. Applications are due March 6.

TRIO report to the Luther community

Eighty-six percent of the 186 Luther students served by the TRIO Achievement Program last year either earned their degree or are persisting toward graduation. During the 2015-2020 grant funding cycle, TRIO student contacts totaled over 28,000 and grant aid exceeded $165,000. Academic support, financial support, and emotional support are consistently cited by TRIO participants as key program benefits. For details, we invite you to check out our latest report!

Compost collection paused until Feb. 4

Luther compost collection locations will be closed for Term Break beginning on Jan. 26. Compost collection will resume on Feb. 4. If you are not able to save your compostable items in a closed container until re-opening, please deposit compostable items in the "landfill" container. If you need a compost container, contact <sustainability>.

Library books are due

January 26 is the due date for books checked out from the Main Stacks by faculty and staff on or before Friday, Jan. 22. Books checked out by faculty and staff may be renewed online or by emailing <library>. The new due date is May 7, the last day of classes for the spring semester. Books that have already been renewed three times (two years) will not be renewed again; rather you will need to bring these books in physically to the circulation desk to have them checked in and then out again to "re-start the clock." View your account online by clicking on "Library Account" on the Preus Library website.

Order Valentine's Day treats

Give a treat to a friend, your kids or that special someone. Order giant heart-shaped chocolate chip cookies with a personalized message or a dozen cookies with all the fixings to frost at home. Order online by Friday, Feb. 5, and pick up in the Dining Services office Friday, Feb. 12. Place your order on the Dining Services website.

'Green-N-Go' containers at Grab-N-Go

Beginning Feb. 4, all meals served at Luther's Grab-N-Go window will be packaged in reusable "Green-N-Go" containers. From now on, no disposable containers will be available at the Grab-N-Go window. Diners should put food leftovers in the compost, then return green containers within 36 hours to designated receptacles on the Union ground and first floors. All "Green-N-Go" containers will be washed and sanitized before being reused. Watch for "Green-N-Go" signs in the Union.

Ethnic Arts 2021 canceled

The Center for Intercultural Engagement and Student Success would like to announce that the Ethnic Arts Festival 2021 is canceled. We hope to reschedule the event for fall 2021.  

CEPE book group: 'The Grid'

Join the Winneshiek Energy District in reading Gretchen Bakke's "The Grid: The Fraying Wires Between Americans and Our Energy Future," a book about the history, science, and politics surrounding the electricity grid. Discussions times are Feb. 16 and March 2, 9:45 a.m. or 6 p.m. Free books offered by CEPE. Students are especially encouraged to join, but the group is open to all. Sign up on the CEPE website.

Luther pays tribute to James Baldwin during Black History Month

Luther has events planned throughout the month of February to celebrate the work and achievements of people of color during Black History Month. This year's events feature author and activist James Baldwin. Through film showings, lectures, discussions and performances, audience members will have the opportunity to deepen their knowledge about the struggles and hardships that came and still come from being Black in America and gain a historical perspective that can be used to better understand recent events. 'James Baldwin: The Price of a Ticket' film screening Feb. 4

Luther's Black History Month events kick off at 7 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 4, with a virtual screening of the film "James Baldwin: The Price of a Ticket." The film is available for members of the Luther community to watch anytime via the Kanopy streaming service. To access the film, go to https://luther.kanopy.com/video/james-baldwin-price-ticket, and log in with your Norsekey if prompted. For community members with a Decorah Public Library card, the film is available at https://decorah.kanopy.com/product/james-baldwin-price-ticket. When prompted, you will use your DPL card number and password to create a Kanopy account.

Jazz Combo Concert Feb. 6

Three Luther College jazz combos will perform in a virtual combo concert at 2 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 6. The ensembles will present a program of compositions by John Coltrane, Antonio Carlos Jobim, Joe Zawinul, Thad Jones, Oliver Nelson, Jaco Pastorius, and Horace Silver. Jon Ailabouni's '10 arrangement of Wayne Shorter's "Mahjong" will be featured alongside the premiere of Nolan Mancl's '23 original composition "I've Got A Fever." This event will be livestreamed.

Paideia Texts and Issues lecture Feb. 16

The lecture "Amish Genetic Health Needs and an Innovative Community Response" will take place via Zoom at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 16, as part of the 2020-21 Paideia Texts and Issues Lecture series "Building Community in a Changing Society." Angela Kueny, Philip Iversen, and Lee Zook will discuss their work with Amish families in Iowa and Minnesota, and how their research is part of a larger initiative to address inaccessibility challenges in the current healthcare system.

Position openings

Associate Athletic Trainer (.83 FTE): Position to assist the Head Athletic Trainer with the responsibilities of managing the athletic training services with the understanding of current NCAA Dlll and NATA policies and procedures. Responsibilities include assisting with coordination and scheduling of athletic training coverage, conducting institutional drug testing for student-athletes, teaching nutrition classes, and serving as a preceptor in ATEP. Duties will also include involvement in the college's COVID testing program. Master's degree in athletic training or related field required, two years of collegiate experience and prior teaching experience and John Hopkins Contract Tracing Certification preferred. Successful candidate will possess, or be in the process of acquiring, an Iowa Athletic Training Licensure.

ARTICLES, CREATIONS, HONORS

The new documentary, "7 Yards: The Chris Norton Story," featuring Chris Norton '14 and his wife Emily is available now for pre-order on Apple TV and Amazon Prime Video. The film will be officially released on Feb. 23, 2021. "I'm beyond grateful and excited to share this with everyone. It will inspire you to overcome, to never give up and to have faith," said Norton.

Gregory Peterson played a solo concert at the Church of St. Louis King of France in St. Paul, Minn. as part of the church's 2020-2021 Tuesday Organ Recital Series, on Jan. 19. The program included music by Buxtehude, Bach, Debussy, and Messiaen.

Marv Slind's article, "Child Naming Patterns as an Indication of Assimilation: A Case Study in Eastern Washington's Selbu Community," has been published in the Journal of Family History (January 2021).

In her post, The Many Challenges of Being an International Student During a Pandemic, Sneha Verma '22 shares some of the challenges international students have faced during the pandemic and how resilience is key to overcoming them.
