Tenure and promotions

At the February meeting, the Board of Regents granted tenure to Marie Drews, Jill Leet-Otley, LaDonna McGohan, Ryan Torkelson, Molly Wilker, and Roman Yasinovskyy. Drews, Leet-Otley, Torkelson, Wilker, and Yasinovskyy were also promoted to associate professor. Also announced at the February meeting was the promotion of Elizabeth Steding to full professor. Congratulations to all!

Alumni Office request for Distinguished Service Award Nominations

We are seeking Distinguished Service Award nominations for 2021 and beyond. Luther faculty, staff, and emeriti can recommend a name for consideration. Department heads are encouraged to discuss nominees within your departments. Nominations should be accompanied by as much documentation as is available and sent to Kirk Johnson <johnsonk> by Monday, March 1, if possible.

Distinguished Service Awards (DSA) are given each fall at Homecoming. Alumni who are selected generally receive the award during an anniversary year of their graduation. For the fall of 2021, the nominees should be from the classes ending in "1" or "6" who have graduated at least 20 years ago. Luther's online alumni directory can be a useful tool. Use the advanced search feature to sort by class year and major.

Distinguished Service Award criteria:

1. Meritorious service in one's profession, society, church, or community
2. Loyalty and service to Luther College
3. Fidelity to the ideals of Luther College
4. Timeliness of the award (during their reunion year)

HR update

1095-C forms are available
Human Resources has generated 2020 1095-C Employer-Provided Health Insurance Offer and Coverage forms. Employees who elected to receive those online can log in to NorseHub to view and print their forms. For employees who have not opted in to online distribution, we will be printing and distributing forms via campus mail this week. If you do not receive a form or have questions, please contact Matthew Bills <bills>, 387-1189.

Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) reimbursement application open

Applications for the CSA Reimbursement Program are now being accepted. You can find all the details, and the application form, on the Center for Sustainable Communities website. The program reimburses current faculty and staff 50% (maximum $100) of the cost of a CSA subscription. The CSA program is a popular program that supports local farmers and helps your household eat fresh food, with all the flavor and vitamin benefits. For questions, contact <sustainability>.

Career Center: virtual summer camp fair Feb. 18

Please help spread the word among your students that the first virtual summer camp fair will be held on Thursday, Feb. 18. It's open to all students/all majors looking for an adventurous summer job where they can gain leadership skills in a beautiful outdoor environment. Over 65 camps from across the U.S. have registered to attend. The virtual fair will be hosted via our online career management platform Handshake for registration and sessions. Questions? To students, faculty, and staff: when creating events on your Google Calendar associated with your personal @luther.edu Gmail account, please do not select a "Room" option from the list of rooms located on the right-hand side of the "More Options" window (the tab located next to "Guests"). ROAD 2021 dates

We are excited to welcome new students and assist in their transition to Luther. Out of continued caution, the new student Registration, Orientation, and Advising Day (ROAD) will be virtual for 2021. Dates are as follows:

• Tuesday, June 8
• Tuesday, June 15
• Tuesday, June 22
• Monday, Aug. 23 (to accommodate students who are admitted and deposit later in the year)

ROAD is now housed in the Center for Academic Enrichment (CAE) and is a collaborative effort and process that includes Student Success, Academics, Admissions, Student Life, Information Technology Services, and Marketing and Communications.

Book Shop news

Black History Month books spotlight
Learn more about Black History with four books written by the Equal Justice Initiative: "Reconstruction in America," "Lynching In America," "Segregation in American," and "Slavery In America." The books are $5 each or purchase the set of four for $15. These books were generously donated by a Luther College alumnus. If this price is not feasible, any donation will be accepted. The donor would like these in as many hands as possible. Enjoy!

Ash Wednesday walk through communion Feb. 17

College Ministries invites the Luther community to a walk through communion 10:15-11 a.m. Wednesday, Feb. 17, in the CFL. Participants will be directed to a communion station where they will receive the Sacrament with prayer and a blessing for Ash Wednesday. There will also be buttons available in lieu of ashes. The Sacrament will be provided in a sealed all-in-one goblet with one end containing gluten-free unleavened bread and the other end containing red wine. Our servers will be taking every precaution to serve participants in a safe manner.

Good Shepherd Ash Wednesday opportunities

Good Shepherd Lutheran Church welcomes students, staff, and faculty to Outdoor Communion and Imposition of Ashes at 12:30 p.m. and 5:15 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 17. Safe COVID procedures will be followed by all. Alternatively, "Ashes to Go" packets can be picked up at the service as well. Also join Good Shepherd for Online Worship on YouTube, which will be available for viewing all day. Contact Vicar Kathryn <thompson> with questions or further connection.

Luther pays tribute to James Baldwin during Black History Month

Luther has events planned throughout the month of February to celebrate the work and achievements of people of color during Black History Month. This year's events feature author and activist James Baldwin. Through film showings, lectures, discussions and performances, audience members will have the opportunity to deepen their knowledge about the struggles and hardships that came and still come from being Black in America and gain a historical perspective that can be used to better understand recent events. Paideia Texts and Issues lecture Feb. 16

The lecture "Amish Genetic Health Needs and an Innovative Community Response" will take place via Zoom at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 16, as part of the 2020-21 Paideia Texts and Issues Lecture series "Building Community in a Changing Society." Angela Kueny, Philip Iversen, and Lee Zook will discuss their work with Amish families in Iowa and Minnesota, and how their research is part of a larger initiative to address inaccessibility challenges in the current healthcare system.

Virtual watch party: 'Rhythm and Revolution' Feb. 19

Luther's Music Dept and Black Student Union invite the Luther community to a virtual watch party of the Stax Music Academy 2021 Black History Month presentation, "Rhythm and Revolution: Expressions of Struggle, Collaboration, and Peace!" 8-9:30 p.m. Friday, Feb. 19, via Zoom. The Zoom link will be available at luther.edu/events.

Virtual senior recital: Megan Elford, vocal Feb. 20

Megan Elford, '21, mezzo-soprano, in collaboration with Eric Head, will perform a senior recital at 11 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 20. The program includes works by Handel, Clara Schumann, Robert Schumann, Copland, Poulenc, and Gounod. This event will be livestreamed. Megan is a student of Dr. Kreuscher and Dr. Shaneyfelt.

Virtual student recital: Madi Miller, voice Feb. 20

Madison "Madi" Miller '22, soprano, in collaboration with Eric Head, will perform a junior recital at 2 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 20. The program includes works by Debussy, Schubert, Parry, Finzi, Rorem, and Mozart. This event will be livestreamed. Madi is a student of Jonathon Struve and Du Huang.

Symphony Orchestra Concert Feb. 21

Symphony Orchestra will perform a winter concert at 4 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 21. The concert will be livestreamed and will include Fantasia on a theme by Thomas Tallis, by Ralph Vaughan Williams; Aequilibrium, for percussion quintet, by Mat Campbell; and the fourth movement of the Symphony No. 1 in C minor, by Johannes Brahms. Symphony Orchestra is conducted by Daniel Baldwin.

'How I Left the Interfaith Movement and Found Interfaith Solidarity,' Dr. Edward Curtis Feb. 24

Edward Curtis will offer reflections and invite dialogue on the broader theme of interfaith activism in light of his own disillusionment with corporate, and foundation-funded interfaith movements in the United States. Curtis will address how this disillusionment ultimately opened the way for him to focus more of his energy on Black, Muslim, and Palestinian liberation. Join us at 7 p.m. CST Wednesday, Feb. 24, for this virtual event open to the public, with a livestream link available at luther.edu/events. Sponsored by the Center for Ethics and Public Engagement and College Ministries.

First Lutheran offering space to grieve and reflect

This has been a hard few weeks for the Decorah community, marked by the loss of several people held dear, including Luther Regent Emeritus and alumnus Arne Sorenson. From 4-7 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 18, First Lutheran Church will open up the sanctuary for anyone who would like to pray and light a candle. They ask that people wear masks and sit apart.

Luther receives Roy J. Carver Charitable Trust grant

Luther College has been awarded a $200,000 grant from the Roy J. Carver Charitable Trust to support the creation of a comprehensive Nursing Simulation Center (NSC). The NSC will create additional real-life practice settings that will more closely simulate a hospital environment. "Our entire department is elated to have received the news about this grant," says April Rowe Neal. "Currently, we have one simulation bay within the simulation lab in addition to an assessment lab. The NSC will expand our space to have four additional simulation rooms, which will feature new mannequins and other supporting equipment, such as IV pumps. The added space and new equipment will provide more opportunities for students to practice thinking and leading like a nurse.

Andy Hageman continues his Twin Peaks articles with this unusual juxtaposition of David Lynch's cinema and one of the most iconic music videos of the 1980s.

Thomas C. Johnson recently published an article, "Television, Pro Football and Mobile Privatization, 1939-1970," in Historical Journal of Film, Radio and Television.
