President Ward announces appointment of new provost

President Jenifer K. Ward has announced the appointment of Lynda A. Szymanski to the newly created provost position at Luther College. Beginning on July 1, Szymanski will work alongside the president to provide energetic and creative leadership as she oversees a student-facing division that includes academic affairs, student engagement, and student success. Szymanski brings strong experience to the role through her teaching and administrative leadership positions at St. Catherine University in St. Paul, Minnesota. Being Community updates

When you sign up for a COVID test through the EAST program: We encourage you to download the NAVICA app (App Store or Google Play Store) and set up an account prior to arriving at the testing center. The NAVICA app was designed by Abbott to pair with the BinaxNOW rapid antigen test for COVID-19. The app allows you to access and display your BinaxNOW test results. Test results displayed through the NAVICA app are encrypted and available only to the test participant and the staff at the testing center.

The Being Community website is the hub of information and inspiration for Luther's approach to the 2020-21 academic year. We invite community questions and feedback.

Fabric Drive!

Seeking fabric donations! Student volunteers are creating silverware pouches in an initiative to reduce the use of disposable cutlery. Fabric should be tightly woven, natural fibers, standard weight (like quilting fabric), and not stretchy. Patterns and solids welcome! Minimum size 5"x14". Look for collection boxes in the Campus Programming Office (CFL 101) and Reuse Closet (Valders 364). Contact the Center for Sustainable Communities <sustainability> with questions.

CAE Academic Success Workshops

Are your students in need of honing their academic skills? Workshop Wednesdays has changed to CAE Academic Success Workshops. Different topics are covered each week. Every Tuesday at 10 a.m., starting March 9, via Zoom. Click the links for all details.  

Join MPR's Talking Volumes

Minnesota Public Radio's Talking Volumes-Talking Race has set aside 20 tickets for Luther community members! Join a live webinar with host Kerri Miller and author Naima Coster at 7 p.m. Tuesday, March 30. Coster's new book, "What's Mine and Yours," will be provided by the CEPE to the first 20 people wanting to participate in the webinar. Email <cepe> for your chance to join!

Upgrading network access control system

Starting at 6 a.m. Friday, March 5, ITS will be upgrading our Network Access Control system. During short portions of the upgrade process computers may be unable to make new connections to the LCWireless and LCSecure wireless networks. The upgrade process is expected to be completed before 8 a.m. For updates on this upgrade visit the ITS blog.

It's not too late to get a flu vaccine!

If you have not yet had a flu vaccine and would like to receive one, please call Health Service at 387-1045 and schedule an appointment. These are free for students and would be $25 cash or check for staff and faculty (a receipt will be given for reimbursement at the time of service). #GetVaccinated!

ISAA Fashion Show fundraiser continues

Proceeds raised through the Feb. 13 ISAA Fashion Show are going to support refugees affected by the Tigray War in Ethiopia. Even though the fashion show is over, faculty and staff can still donate to help the displaced refugees by purchasing tickets on Luther's ticket website or calling Luther's Box Office and donating over the phone.

Luther hosts events in celebration of Women's History Month

From Susan B. Anthony and Sojourner Truth to Greta Thunberg and Amanda Gorman, women have made and continue to make a profound impact on the world. In honor of Women's History Month, Luther College has planned events throughout the month of March to celebrate the contributions of women to history, society and culture. All events are free and open to the public, with viewing information available at luther.edu/events.

'Sustainability Careers: A Luther College Alumni Panel' March 4

Luther College is hosting an online panel discussion titled "Sustainability Careers: A Luther College Alumni Panel." At 7 p.m. Thursday, March 4, four Luther alumni will speak about how sustainability concerns have influenced their careers. A link will be available under this event listing at luther.edu/events. The event is co-sponsored by Luther's Center for Sustainable Communities, the Alumni and Development Office, the Environmental Studies Program, and the Career Center.

Virtual student recital: Frost Bowen-Bailey, horn March 6

Frost Bowen-Bailey '22, in collaboration with Dr. Nicholas Shaneyfelt (piano), and Sarah Benton (horn), will perform a junior horn recital at 11 a.m. Saturday, March 6. The program includes works by Paul Dukas, Jeffrey Agrell, Justin Bush, and Philipp Georg Telemann. The event will be live-streamed. Frost is a student of Rebecca Boehm Shaffer.

Virtual senior recital: Rachel Bartleman, trumpet March 6

Rachel Bartleman '21, in collaboration with Corey Silberstein, Nathan Eck, Belle Searcy, Katilynn Swanson, Shana Liu, Mattie Snyder, and Malachi Rettmann, will perform a senior trumpet recital at 2 p.m. Saturday, March 6. The program will include works by Handel, Clarke, Turrin, Arutunian, and Ketting. This event will be livestreamed. Rachel is a student of John Cord, Jon Ailabouni, and a former student of Evan Fowler.

Kyli Kurtenbach '21, in collaboration with Corey Silberstein, Kaelyn Kurtenbach-Winch, and Anneka Duncan, will perform a senior horn recital at 2 p.m. Sunday, March 7. 'Women in the Lead: Student Experiences at Luther' March 8

Join us at 4 p.m. on Monday, March 8, International Women's Day, to hear student leaders share the joys and challenges of being "women in the lead." Featured speakers include Kelao Charmaine Neumbo '22 (president, International Students and Allies Assn.), Evelyn Montoya '23 (president, Latinxs Unidx), and Ursula Damtse '22 (social media coordinator, Black Student Union). Position openings

Career Coach and Internship Manager (1.0 FTE): Position provides individual and group career coaching for students and alumni by helping them throughout the career development process from building self-awareness to exploration of opportunities to effectively landing jobs. This individual will also manage the logistics of Luther's internship program and provide administrative support to the office and Career Center Director. Bachelor's degree is required, preferably from a liberal arts college; Masters in Student Personnel Administration, Leadership Studies, Counseling, or Higher Education preferred.

Maintenance Mechanic/Electrician (1.0 FTE): Position will perform all types of building maintenance and repair. Most work will be related to the various electrical systems on campus from three phase primary voltages to low voltage control systems. Work will meet the National Electrical Code standards. Maintenance staff will interpret drawings, schematics, and blue prints and use product manuals to arrive at a solution for service problems; participate in maintenance and inspection schedules for campus fire alarms systems, elevators, and building automation systems, and provide assistance to other Facilities Service departments. High school diploma and a State of Iowa electrical license required. Preference given to a journeyman's license. Four years of formal working experience in installation and repair of electrical systems, a valid driver's license and computer skills to access web-based work order systems are also required.

Multimedia Strategic Fellow (1.0 FTE, one-year appointment): Fellow participates on the User Services and Multimedia teams within Information Technology Services to assist the Multimedia and Makerspace Lead in promoting and supporting the effective uses of video, audio, textual, graphical, and other electronic media in support of both online and on-campus teaching, learning, research and administrative purposes. Qualified candidates have a bachelor's degree or equivalent professional experience. Preference will be given to recent Luther graduates who were Multimedia Technician student workers or other student workers within ITS or Luther.
