President Ward signs Luther College Climate Action Plan

Luther College continues to gain national recognition for its trailblazing work in sustainability. Building on those efforts, President Jenifer K. Ward has signed and approved Luther College's updated Climate Action Plan which focuses on realistic changes that need to happen in order for Luther to reach carbon neutrality by 2030, a plan initiated by President Richard Torgerson in 2007 and reaffirmed by Luther's Board of Regents in 2018. The Climate Action Plan includes details for greenhouse gas reduction on Luther's campus, an outline of the college's Energy Master Plan and opportunities for outreach through the academic curriculum and community development. 

Being Community updates

Effective March 2, students, faculty, and staff may now receive an asymptomatic COVID-19 test two times in a 30-day period through Luther's Expanded Asymptomatic Surveillance Testing (EAST) program. Luther's COVID alert level decreased to green on Tuesday, February 23. Getting yourself tested can help Luther to stay in the green zone.

Deco Products Applied Learning Endowment

Deco Products is continuing its support of Luther College and its students. The manufacturing company out of Decorah has established the Deco Products Applied Learning Endowment which will fund internship and applied learning opportunities for qualified students.

Lifelong Learner Seminar #2

"A Discussion of Weapons of Math Destruction: How Big Data Increases Inequality and Threatens Democracy by Cathy O'Neil" will convene via Zoom from 10 a.m.–11:30 a.m. (CT) for three Wednesdays, beginning Wednesday, March 17 and ending on Wednesday, March 31. Moderator: Bradley Miller, professor emeritus computer science. Visit the Alumni website for more information and online registration. 

Virtual spring career fair March 11

Encourage your students of all majors and all years to attend the virtual spring career fair on Thursday, March 11. Over 50 organizations will be attending and are excited to visit with Luther students about their wide variety of internships and job opportunities. Students can register now through Handshake. Fabric Drive!

Seeking fabric donations! Student volunteers are creating silverware pouches in an initiative to reduce the use of disposable cutlery. Fabric should be tightly woven, natural fibers, standard weight (like quilting fabric), and not stretchy. Patterns and solids welcome! Minimum size 5"x14". Look for collection boxes in the Campus Programming Office (CFL 101) and Reuse Closet (Valders 364). Contact the Center for Sustainable Communities <sustainability> with questions.

CAE Academic Success Workshops

Are your students in need of honing their academic skills? Workshop Wednesdays has changed to CAE Academic Success Workshops. Different topics are covered each week. Every Tuesday at 10 a.m., starting March 9, via Zoom. Click the links for all details.

Minnesota Public Radio's Talking Volumes-Talking Race has set aside 20 tickets for Luther community members! Join a live webinar with host Kerri Miller and author Naima Coster at 7 p.m. Tuesday, March 30. Upgrading network access control system

Starting at 6 a.m. Friday, March 5, ITS will be upgrading our Network Access Control system. During short portions of the upgrade process computers may be unable to make new connections to the LCWireless and LCSecure wireless networks. The upgrade process is expected to be completed before 8 a.m. For updates on this upgrade visit the ITS blog.

Good Shepherd virtual Lenten music series begins March 10

A Virtual Lenten Music Series begins on Wednesday, March 10, followed by performances on March 17, 24, and 31 on Good Shepherd Lutheran Church's YouTube Channel. Each performance premieres at 12:15 p.m. and will last approximately 30 minutes. Recitals are available free for viewing and will remain on the YouTube Channel for later viewing. The March 10 performance features cellist Craig Hultgren performing new music for cello.

Luther hosts events in celebration of Women's History Month

From Susan B. Anthony and Sojourner Truth to Greta Thunberg and Amanda Gorman, women have made and continue to make a profound impact on the world. In honor of Women's History Month, Luther College has planned events throughout the month of March to celebrate the contributions of women to history, society and culture. All events are free and open to the public, with viewing information available at luther.edu/events.

Virtual faculty recital: Miko Kominami, piano March 12

Miko Kominami will perform the Goldberg Variations by J.S. Bach as a solo piano recital at 7:30 p.m. Friday, March 12. The Goldberg Variations begins with a simple and beautiful Aria, followed by thirty variations, concluding with a reprise of the Aria. The piece was originally composed for the harpsichord, but Kominami will present her interpretation of the work on the modern piano. This event will be livestreamed.

Virtual senior recital: Kari Jacobson, flute March 13

Kari Jacobson '21, flute, in collaboration with Dr. Corey Silberstein, will perform a senior recital at 11 a.m. Saturday, March 13. The program includes works by J.S. Bach, Reinecke, and Vaughan Williams. The event will be livestreamed. Kari is a student of Carol Hester.

Virtual student recital: Ashley Harms, voice March 13

Ashley Harms, '22, voice, in collaboration with Eric Head and Ben Meyer, will perform a junior recital at 5 p.m. Saturday, March 13. The program includes works by Wolf, Rachmaninoff, Hahn, and Mozart. This event will be livestreamed. Ashley is a student of Carla Hanson and Nicholas Shaneyfelt.

Virtual senior recital: Baili Stewart, cello March 13

Baili Stewart '21, cello, will be performing a senior recital in collaboration with Cory Silverstein, piano, at 8 p.m. Saturday, March 13. Baili is a student of Dr. Kacy Clopton. The program will include Bach's first cello suite, an English folk tune by Ralph Vaughan Williams, and a Finnish folk tune by Edith Sohlstrom. This recital will be livestreamed.

Sienna Haubein '22, soprano, in collaboration with Eric Head, will perform a junior recital at 2 p.m. Sunday, March 14. The program includes works by Vaughan Williams, Fauré, Bellini, Donaudy, Schubert, Schumann, and Sondheim. This event will be livestreamed. Sienna is a student of Deborah Gover.

Virtual student recital: Liz Burton, soprano March 14

Liz Burton '22, soprano, in collaboration with Corey Silberstein, will perform a junior recital at 4 p.m. Sunday, March 14. The program will feature works by Morlacchi, R. Schumann, R. Strauss, Hahn, Argento, R.I. Gordon, and Mozart. This event will be livestreamed. Liz is a student of Beth Ray Westlund and Nicholas Shaneyfelt.

Virtual student recital: Kirsten Loynachan, bassoon March 14

Kirsten Loynachan '22, in collaboration with Dr. Corey Silberstein, will perform a junior bassoon recital at 6 p.m. Sunday, March 14. The program will include works by Antonio Vivaldi, Francisco Mignone, and Gabriel Pierné. This event will be livestreamed. Kirsten is a student of Thea Groth.

'Faith, Social Justice, and Climate Advocacy' webinar March 18

Carbon pricing reduces greenhouse gasses by increasing fossil fuel prices, but this can harm the poor. The webinar "Faith, Social Justice, and Climate Advocacy" will address this issue at 7 p.m. Thursday, March 18. The speakers, Valentina Harmjanz and Juan Rios, will explore the topic through the lens of their Catholic faith. The webinar is co-sponsored by the Center for Sustainable Communities and the NE Iowa Chapter of CCL. For details go to luther.edu/events.

Women, Faith, and Finance virtual event April 9

On Friday, April 9, Luther is hosting a virtual keynote by Dr. Christine Whelan of University of Wisconsin-Madison as part of the Women, Faith, and Finance Initiative. Her presentation is titled, "Consuming Happiness: Money, Relationships, Equality, and Meaning…in the Pandemic and Beyond." Women of all ages are invited to participate. Position openings

Assistant Director of Residence Life/Summer Housing Director (1.0 FTE): Position is responsible for coordinating the student learning and community and personal development programs in Farwell, Larsen, and Olson Halls during the academic year. During the summer months this position will work full-time as the Summer Housing Director. Master's degree in college student personnel, counseling, or higher education preferred; bachelor's degree required.

Maintenance Mechanic/Electrician (1.0 FTE): Position will perform all types of building maintenance and repair. Most work will be related to the various electrical systems on campus from three phase primary voltages to low voltage control systems. Work will meet the National Electrical Code standards. Maintenance staff will interpret drawings, schematics, and blue prints and use product manuals to arrive at a solution for service problems; participate in maintenance and inspection schedules for campus fire alarms systems, elevators, and building automation systems, and provide assistance to other Facilities Service departments. High school diploma and a State of Iowa electrical license required. Preference given to a journeyman's license. Four years of formal working experience in installation and repair of electrical systems, a valid driver's license and computer skills to access web-based work order systems are also required.

Multimedia Strategic Fellow (1.0 FTE, one-year appointment): Fellow participates on the User Services and Multimedia teams within Information Technology Services to assist the Multimedia and Makerspace Lead in promoting and supporting the effective uses of video, audio, textual, graphical, and other electronic media in support of both online and on-campus teaching, learning, research and administrative purposes. Qualified candidates have a bachelor's degree or equivalent professional experience. Preference will be given to recent Luther graduates who were Multimedia Technician student workers or other student workers within ITS or Luther.

ARTICLES, CREATIONS, HONORS

Loren Toussaint's research is featured in the new book "Find Your Joy." Toussaint's research is found in the "Let It Go" chapter and other chapters focus on compassion, gratitude, mindfulness, wonder, and strengths. It is an enjoyable and easy read that is quite relevant to our current time. More about the book at www.jenniferkinglindley.com. Loren's research was also featured as a cover story in "Health" magazine.

Jill Wilson recently presented three music education-related research projects, two of which were in collaboration with colleagues at multiple institutions, at the Suncoast Music Education Research Symposium (University of South Florida), Desert Skies Symposium (Arizona State University), the NAfME Biennial Research Conference, Minnesota Music Educators Association, and Missouri Music Educators Association. Presenting on the same day in Florida and Missouri was made possible by Zoom!
