Giving Day success

16 hours of giving + more than 2,263 gnome-tastic gifts + 2,092 volunteer service hours = $1,195,265.70, a big day for the Luther Fund!

Luther College named to National Register of Historic Places

The U.S. Department of the Interior has named the 32-acre Luther College Campus Historic District to the National Register of Historic Places. The 3.5 year nomination process was co-led by the Decorah Historic Preservation Commission (DHPC) and Luther College, and included substantial, much-appreciated research by twenty Decorah, DHPC, and Luther volunteers.

HR updates

2020 health and dependent care flex claims
Health and dependent care flex claims for payroll deductions made during 2020 must be submitted for reimbursement by March 31, 2021. Claims must have been incurred by March 15, 2021 to be eligible for reimbursement for the 2020 payroll elections.

COVID-19 vaccination and PTO
As the COVID-19 vaccines become available to more population segments, Luther wants to remove any barriers to employees who have the opportunity to become vaccinated. Employees with an opportunity to get a vaccine anywhere within a 2-hour radius of Decorah will not need to use PTO for travel time to and from the appointment as well as the appointment time.

COVID-19 Vaccine Resource Locator
UMR has launched a COVID-19 Vaccine Resource Locator to help members navigate local vaccination planning and find resources for their area to help them take steps toward vaccination. This ZIP code-based tool finds online, public vaccine resources available through state and local health departments as well as national retail pharmacies .

TIAA individual counseling sessions
TIAA announces individual virtual counseling sessions 8:30 a.m.-3:30 p.m. Friday, March 26. Space is limited. Register online at www.TIAA.org/schedulenow or by calling 800-732-8353 between 7 a.m. and 7 p.m., Monday–Friday.

Community Supported Agriculture reimbursement application open

Applications for the CSA Reimbursement Program are now being accepted. You can find all the details, and the application form, on the Center for Sustainable Communities website. The program reimburses current faculty and staff 50% (maximum $100) of the cost of a CSA subscription. The CSA program is a popular program that supports local farmers and helps your household eat fresh food, with all the flavor and vitamin benefits. For questions, contact the CSC <sustainability>.

Preus Library 'Level 1 Green' Updates

With the campus move to "Level 1 Green," Preus Library has added clusters of physically distanced seating on the Library's Main Floor. In addition, Main Floor study tables and rooms are now available for "first come, first served" individual use (tables and rooms are still available by reservation on the lower floor). Collections located on the Main Floor are now open for browsing, including Reference, Leisure Reading, DVDs, and Periodicals.

Doc Center offers printing on canvas

The Document Center offers wide format printing on canvas that we can stretch-mount to a wood frame.  Currently we offer 16x16, 16x24 and 20x30 inches. Email the Document Center <doccenter> with any questions, file requirements and for a price quote.

Deco Products is continuing its support of Luther College and its students. The manufacturing company out of Decorah has established the Deco Products Applied Learning Endowment which will fund internship and applied learning opportunities for qualified students.

Good Shepherd Virtual Lenten Music Series continues March 17

The second in Good Shepherd Lutheran Church's Virtual Lenten Music Series features a solo guitar recital by Chris Olson, with a combination of Jazz standards and original compositions. Styles include Swing, Samba, Afro-Cuban, Acoustic New Age, Reggae, Jazz Ballad, Bossa Nova, and Funk. The performance premieres at 12:15 p.m. Wednesday, March 17, and lasts approximately 30 minutes. It is available for viewing on Good Shepherd's YouTube channel and will remain there for later viewing.

'Faith, Social Justice, and Climate Advocacy' webinar March 18

Carbon pricing reduces greenhouse gasses by increasing fossil fuel prices, but this can harm the poor. The webinar "Faith, Social Justice, and Climate Advocacy" will address this issue at 7 p.m. Thursday, March 18. The speakers, Valentina Harmjanz and Juan Rios, will explore the topic through the lens of their Catholic faith. The webinar is co-sponsored by the Center for Sustainable Communities and the NE Iowa Chapter of CCL. For details go to luther.edu/events.

Concert Band concert March 21

The Luther College Concert Band will present a program at 4 p.m. Sunday, March 21. The performance will include compositions by Adolphus Hailstork (American Guernica), Morten Lauridsen (O Magnum Mysterium, transcribed by H. Robert Reynolds), and Omar Thomas (Come Sunday). This event will be livestreamed.

Women, Faith, and Finance virtual event April 9

On Friday, April 9, Luther is hosting a virtual keynote by Dr. Christine Whelan of University of Wisconsin-Madison as part of the Women, Faith, and Finance Initiative. Her presentation is titled, "Consuming Happiness: Money, Relationships, Equality, and Meaning…in the Pandemic and Beyond." Women of all ages are invited to participate. This Zoom event (noon–1 p.m.) is free, but you must register at luther.edu/wff. Email <lovellje> for more information.

Virtual Student Recitals

Kathryn "Katie" Hall '21, clarinet, in collaboration with Anne Wilson, Spencer Ketterling, and Dr. Nicholas Shaneyfelt, will perform a senior recital at 11 a.m. Saturday, March 20. The program contains works from C.M. Weber, Poulenc, and Glinka, and will be streamed live on the Luther College website. Katie is a student of Dr. Michael Chesher.

Spencer Ketterling '22, bassoon, in collaboration with Katie Hall, Anne Wilson, and Dr. Nicholas Shaneyfelt, will perform a junior recital at 2 p.m. on Saturday, March 20. The program includes works by Adolphus Hailstork, Eugéne Bozza, and Carl Maria von Weber. Spencer is a student of Dr. Thea Groth.

Leah Marxhausen ’22, violin, in collaboration with Paul Patrick Priester and Eric head, will perform a junior recital at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Mar. 20. The program includes works by Bach, Paganini, Spohr, and Sarasate. Leah is a student of Igor Kalnin.

Thomas Warden '21, in collaboration with Dr. Nicholas Shaneyfelt, will perform a senior recital at 11 a.m. Sunday, March 21. The program will include works by Massenet, Quilter, Bellini, Schumann, Hahn, and Handel. Thomas is a student of Carla Hanson and Dr. Nicholas Shaneyfelt.

Elliot Rickert '21, baritone voice, in collaboration with Rachael Brolin will perform a senior recital at 2 p.m. Sunday, March 21. The program includes works by John Dowland, Giacomo Carissimi, Giluseppe Giordani, Felix Mendelssohn, Emile Paladilhe, Vincent d'Indy, and Hugo Wolf. Elliot is a student of Andrew Whitfield.

Retirement

Bob Strong, who has worked at Luther for more than 32 years has announced his retirement effective April 1, 2021. We congratulate Bob and thank him for his dedicated service to the College.

Position openings

Assistant Director of Residence Life/Summer Housing Director (1.0 FTE): Position is responsible for coordinating the student learning and community and personal development programs in Farwell, Larsen, and Olson Halls during the academic year. During the summer months this position will work full-time as the Summer Housing Director. Master's degree in college student personnel, counseling, or higher education preferred; bachelor's degree required.

Director of College Ministries and College Pastor (1.0 FTE): Provides pastoral leadership for the Luther community through ministries of spiritual formation, vocational discernment, ecumenical and interfaith dialogue, service, and leadership development. Ministry at Luther is grounded in the commitments made in the affirmation of baptism: to live among God's faithful people, to hear the word of God and share in the Lord's supper, to proclaim the good news of God in Christ through word and deed, to serve all people, following the example of Jesus, and to strive for justice and peace in all the earth. Qualified candidate will be a Rostered Word and Sacrament minister in good standing within the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA), have an M.Div. with 5-10 years of ministry preferred, as well as with familiarity with the traditions and values of Lutheran higher education, exceptional capabilities in theological reflection, ritual design, and interfaith leadership.

Social Media Specialist (1.0 FTE): Position is responsible for managing, creating, and publishing engaging, original and high-quality content for the main Luther College social media accounts, in line with the overall marketing strategy. Position will assist with the creation and implementation of critical marketing campaigns and brand strategies to build brand awareness and increasing public reach for Luther College. Bachelor's degree in marketing, communications, public relations or related field required along with in-depth knowledge and understanding of all major social media platforms, experience running social media on behalf of a brand and social media ads, and experience with social media management tools such as Sprout Social required.

And finally...

Women have always played an active role in history. Take some time during Women's History Month to explore some of the historical pioneers and contemporary newsmakers that continue to impact the world.

For example, do you know who organized the first recorded women's political demonstration in America? Or who soared across the sky as the first African American, and the first Native American woman pilot? What famous film actress pioneered the technology that formed the basis for today’s WiFi, GPS, and Bluetooth communication systems?

If you don't know the answers to these questions, you've got some reading to do!
