Being Community updates

Athletic events and music concert attendance policies

• Athletics has released its attendance policy for spring sports events on campus.
• The music department has released a limited in-person attendance policy for concerts held this spring in the CFL (read the full rules on the music department's COVID-19 protocols page under Performances). These events are ticketed and are open to faculty, staff, and students only. Community members, families, and emeriti faculty are not allowed to attend these performances in person.

Both groups will continue to livestream events and concerts. 

The Being Community website is the hub of information and inspiration for Luther's approach to the 2020-21 academic year. We invite community questions and feedback.

HR updates

COVID-19 vaccination and PTO
As the COVID-19 vaccines become available to more population segments, Luther wants to remove any barriers to employees who have the opportunity to become vaccinated. Employees with an opportunity to get a vaccine anywhere within a 2-hour radius of Decorah will not need to use PTO for travel time to and from the appointment as well as the appointment time.

COVID-19 Vaccine Resource Locator
UMR has launched a COVID-19 Vaccine Resource Locator to help members navigate local vaccination planning and find resources for their area to help them take steps toward vaccination. This ZIP code-based tool finds online, public vaccine resources available through state and local health departments as well as national retail pharmacies.

ITS maintenance April 2

Starting at 6 a.m. Friday, April 2, ITS will be performing maintenance on our core network routers. During portions of the upgrade process network and internet access will be unavailable. The upgrade process is expected to be completed before 8 a.m. For updates on this upgrade visit the ITS Blog.

Paideia summer reading

The Paideia Program is excited to announce that 125 copies of the 2021 summer read, "The Vanishing Half," are available to faculty and staff without cost at the Luther Book Shop. This page-turner of a novel by Brit Bennett puts systemic racism under a sharp lens through the story of a Black mother and twin daughters, one of whom decides to pass as white. It was nominated for the National Book Award and named by The New York Times as one of the top 10 books of 2020.

Seeking student for Campus Programming Board

Do you know a student who would like to add their voice to the Campus Programming Board (formerly Lecture and Fine Arts)? Virtual documentary screening

Luther community members have access to a virtual screening of "WE EXIST: Beyond the Binary." The film highlights non-binary individuals and topics of gender binary/social constructs, pronouns, access, and safety. It also tells the personal story of a young adult who identifies as gender neutral. Sponsored by Counseling Service, Identity Studies, Preus Library, CIES, and PRIDE. Available March 19–April 2. Seeking silverware donations

Student volunteers are creating silverware pouches in an initiative to reduce the use of disposable cutlery. Silverware should be in good condition, not bent. CliftonStrengths Chat April 9

Come learn for the first time, or be refreshed about, the CliftonStrengths assessment and its applications. Community Supported Agriculture reimbursement application open

Applications for the CSA Reimbursement Program are now being accepted. You can find all the details, and the application form, on the Center for Sustainable Communities website. The program reimburses current faculty and staff 50% (maximum $100) of the cost of a CSA subscription. The CSA program is a popular program that supports local farmers and helps your household eat fresh food, with all the flavor and vitamin benefits. For questions, contact the CSC <sustainability>.

Preus Library 'Level 1 Green' Updates

With the campus move to "Level 1 Green," Preus Library has added clusters of physically distanced seating on the Library's Main Floor. In addition, Main Floor study tables and rooms are now available for "first come, first served" individual use (tables and rooms are still available by reservation on the lower floor). Collections located on the Main Floor are now open for browsing, including Reference, Leisure Reading, DVDs, and Periodicals.

Doc Center offers printing on canvas

The Document Center offers wide format printing on canvas that we can stretch-mount to a wood frame.  Currently we offer 16x16, 16x24 and 20x30 inches. Email the Document Center <doccenter> with any questions, file requirements and for a price quote.

CGL digital media/office assistant work-study opportunity

Catalyze Coaches are near-peer college graduates who coach high-need and/or first-in-family college students to help them excel at Luther College. Third Recital in Good Shepherd's Virtual Lenten Music Series March 24

Good Shepherd's Virtual Lenten Music Series continues on Wednesday, March 24, with a recital of select Art Songs performed by Jonathon Struve, accompanied by Brooke Joyce. The program premieres at 12:15 p.m., lasts for approximately 30 minutes, and is free for public viewing. It is available for viewing on Good Shepherd's YouTube channel and will remain there for later viewing. Included are two movements from "Out of the Depths" by Brooke Joyce.

Maundy Thursday walk-through communion April 1

College Ministries invites you to a walk-through communion from 9:45-10:30 a.m. Thursday, April 1, in the CFL front lobby. Participants will be directed to a communion station where they will receive the Sacrament with prayer and a blessing for Holy Week. The Sacrament will be provided in a sealed all-in-one goblet with one end containing gluten-free unleavened bread and the other end containing red wine. Our servers will be taking every precaution to serve participants in a safe manner.

Alum Panel: Living a Feminist Life March 25

Join us at 4:30 p.m. Thursday, March 25, for this Women's History Month event to hear from four recent Luther grads what life is like for Women and Gender Studies majors on the other side of college. From graduate school to advocacy work, to finance and even tech, these alums have been "living a feminist life" in unique and inspiring ways. Concerto Finals Recital March 27

The Music Department will feature the Concerto Finals recital at 4 p.m. Saturday, March 27. Finalists are selected from student musicians who competed in the preliminary round and include Rob Clower, oboe; Nathan Eck, piano; Eric Head, piano; Spencer Ketterling, bassoon; Isabella Searcy, violin; and Abby Trewin, mezzo soprano. This event will be livestreamed.

Women, Faith, and Finance virtual event April 9

On Friday, April 9, Luther is hosting a virtual keynote by Dr. Christine Whelan of University of Wisconsin-Madison as part of the Women, Faith, and Finance Initiative. Her presentation is titled, "Consuming Happiness: Money, Relationships, Equality, and Meaning…in the Pandemic and Beyond." Women of all ages are invited to participate. Virtual Student Recitals

Emily Lauer '21, mezzo-soprano, in collaboration with Rachael Brolin, will perform a senior recital at 11 a.m. Saturday, March 27. The program will include works by Vivaldi, Barber, Schubert, Rachmaninoff, and Saint-Saens. Emily is a student of Carla Hanson and Nicholas Shaneyfelt.

Jack Jorgensen '22, baritone, in collaboration with Corey Silberstein, will perform a junior recital at 6 p.m. Saturday, March 27. The program will feature works by Bach, Donaudy, Hahn, Schubert, C. Schumann, Grant Still, and Menotti. Jack is a student of Andrew Whitfield and Nicholas Shaneyfelt.

Abby Trewin '22, mezzo-soprano, in collaboration with Shana Liu and Kathy Reed, will perform a junior recital at 2 p.m. Sunday, March 28. The program includes works by F. Caccini, R. Schumann, Poulenc, and Bernstein. Abby is a student of Andrew Whitfield and Nicholas Shaneyfelt.

Ben Meyer '22, tenor, in collaboration with Rachael Brolin, will perform a junior recital at 6 p.m. Sunday, March 28. The program includes works by Bellini, Hahn, Chausson, Strauss, Coates, Somervell, and Puccini. Ben is a student of Edwin Andereck and Nicohlas Shaneyfelt.

Position openings

Custodial Staff Member (0.75 FTE, 2nd shift): Custodial staff will maintain building appearance and cleanliness in all areas, including lobbies, entrances, classrooms, offices, hallways, kitchens, conference rooms, staircases, study lounges, restrooms, and shower rooms. Hours will typically be 4 p.m.–10:30 p.m., Monday–Friday. High School Diploma and/or equivalent preferred but not required. Must be able to read sufficiently to follow instructions.

Director of College Ministries and College Pastor (1.0 FTE): Provides pastoral leadership for the Luther community through ministries of spiritual formation, vocational discernment, ecumenical and interfaith dialogue, service, and leadership development. Ministry at Luther is grounded in the commitments made in the affirmation of baptism: to live among God's faithful people, to hear the word of God and share in the Lord's supper, to proclaim the good news of God in Christ through word and deed, to serve all people, following the example of Jesus, and to strive for justice and peace in all the earth. Qualified candidate will be a Rostered Word and Sacrament minister in good standing within the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA), have an M.Div. with 5-10 years of ministry preferred, as well as with familiarity with the traditions and values of Lutheran higher education, exceptional capabilities in theological reflection, ritual design, and interfaith leadership.

Project Manager (1.0 FTE): Position to be responsible for the recruitment, development, supervision, and evaluation of facilities staff; coordination of internal resources and contractors/vendors for execution of projects; and track project performance to analyze the successful completion within timeline and budget goals. Associates degree preferred, with a minimum of 6-years' experience. Equivalent experience and education will be considered. High level of computer skills including Microsoft Office, web-based software, and database usage required. Analytical and reasoning skills for evaluation of processes, ability to lift up to 50 pounds, and a valid driver's license are also required. 

Social Media Specialist (1.0 FTE): Position is responsible for managing, creating, and publishing engaging, original and high-quality content for the main Luther College social media accounts, in line with the overall marketing strategy. Position will assist with the creation and implementation of critical marketing campaigns and brand strategies to build brand awareness and increasing public reach for Luther College. Bachelor's degree in marketing, communications, public relations or related field required along with in-depth knowledge and understanding of all major social media platforms, experience running social media on behalf of a brand and social media ads, and experience with social media management tools such as Sprout Social required.

ARTICLES, CREATIONS, HONORS

Sarah Edgington '23 has been selected to serve on a newly formed committee in Hennepin County focused on eliminating disparities in the juvenile justice system. As someone who has witnessed the negative effects of the system and has seen the inequalities firsthand, Edgington provides a valuable voice on the Youth Justice Council. On the council, Edgington serves as a member of the Executive Steering Committee as well as the Youth Advisory Board.

Maryna Nading presented her recent research on therapeutic apprenticeship "Gender Segregation by Medical Specialty in Ukraine" at the second Taras Shevchenko Ukrainian Studies Conference at Indiana University, Bloomington as a part of the panel titled "Contestations in and about Ukraine."

Britt Rhodes delivered a lecture, Trauma Informed Care During a Global Pandemic, via zoom at the Università di Macerata with Dr. Francesca Salias (Università di Macerata) as part of their annual "Week of Inclusion" lectures.
