Commencement 2021
Last week, President Ward announced that Luther will be celebrating this year's Commencement with an in-person ceremony (with modifications in light of the pandemic). Read the full announcement for details.

Summer hours and 2021-22 holiday schedule
Summer hours begin Monday, May 17. For more information about summer hours, plus the holiday schedule for summer 2021 and the 2021-22 academic year, visit the Human Resources website.

Compost collection paused during Easter Break

Collection at all campus compost sites will be paused beginning Wednesday, March 31, and will reopen on Wednesday, April 7. If you are unable to store your compost during the pause (you can refrigerate or freeze it) you should put your compostables in the landfill compartment. If you need a two-liter plastic compost storage container with lid, contact the Center for Sustainable Communities <sustainability>.

From the Risk Management and Safety Committee

Baker Tilly and the IRS warn taxpayers of cyber and refund scams. Tax-related identity theft continues to be a problematic issue and is becoming more dangerous as scammers adapt to preventive measures taken by the IRS and law enforcement. Thieves work year-round to steal personal identification, bank or investment account balances, and tax payments or refunds. This year's stimulus payments and tax law changes are providing scammers additional opportunities to attempt to deceive taxpayers into giving them access to their computers and personal information. Email, telephone calls, text messages and social media channels are used to persuade or intimidate taxpayers into providing such data. With the extension to May 17 for the April 15 deadline, this alert reminds taxpayers to remain vigilant in protecting sensitive information throughout the year.

Erika Lee, a leading voice on anti-Asian racism, appeared at Luther in January, as part of the Civic Sustainability Initiative, hosted by the CEPE, with Evelyn Montoya '23 and Maria Leitz, co-founder of CARE. Dr. Lee's book, "The Making of Asian America: A History," has been called one of the foundational histories of Asian Americans in the United States. After presenting for Luther, she went on to speak in this Washington Post Live event, and testified before Congress last week. She invited us to share these resources with the Luther community. 

Krahn Family Student Life Service Award nominations

Nominations for the Krahn Family Student Life Service Award must be current Sophomore and Junior students who have demonstrated a strong contribution to campus life in a way that embraces the spirit and mission of Luther College. Any student, faculty, or staff member may nominate a student. This award is designed to recognize a student who makes a positive impact to student life. The $1,000 award is expected to be over and above any financial assistance a student receives. The nomination form can be found on the Student Life website. Nominations are due by April 9, 2021.

Kuh Family 'Positively Luther' Award application open

The Kuh Family "Positively Luther" Award is given each year to a student whose character, leadership, and participation in co-curricular and other educationally purposeful activities enhance the quality of campus life. The recipient must be in good academic standing with a demonstrated need for financial assistance. This $5,000 award is expected to be over and above the financial aid package offered by the College. The application for the award can be found on the Student Life website. Applications are due April 9, 2021.

Habitat for Humanity 'Can Mountain'

Save your cans and bottles because the Luther College Chapter of Habitat for Humanity (LCHFH) is hosting "Can Mountain" this spring! The drop-off dates are April 8-11, drop-off location is near the red Ashmore-Jewell barn. All proceeds will be donated to the Winneshiek County Habitat for Humanity. ITS maintenance April 2

Starting at 6 a.m. Friday, April 2, ITS will be performing maintenance on our core network routers. During portions of the upgrade process network and internet access will be unavailable. The upgrade process is expected to be completed before 8 a.m. For updates on this upgrade visit the ITS Blog.

Paideia summer reading

The Paideia Program is excited to announce that 125 copies of the 2021 summer read, "The Vanishing Half," are available to faculty and staff without cost at the Luther Book Shop. This page-turner of a novel by Brit Bennett puts systemic racism under a sharp lens through the story of a Black mother and twin daughters, one of whom decides to pass as white. It was nominated for the National Book Award and named by The New York Times as one of the top 10 books of 2020.

Virtual documentary screening

Luther community members have access to a virtual screening of "WE EXIST: Beyond the Binary." The film highlights non-binary individuals and topics of gender binary/social constructs, pronouns, access, and safety. It also tells the personal story of a young adult who identifies as gender neutral. Sponsored by Counseling Service, Identity Studies, Preus Library, CIES, and PRIDE. Available March 19–April 2. Seeking silverware donations

Student volunteers are creating silverware pouches in an initiative to reduce the use of disposable cutlery. Silverware should be in good condition, not bent. Last Good Shepherd Lenten Music Series Recital March 31

The final recital in this Virtual Lenten Music Series features Jazz Duo Jon Ailabouni, trumpet, and Chris Olson, guitar, performing compositions written by Ailabouni. The new works reflect on the loneliness in quarantine and self-isolation, and the state of democracy after the insurrection at the Capitol. The performance begins at 12:15 p.m., lasts approximately 30 minutes, and can be viewed at Good Shepherd's YouTube channel. It will remain there for later viewing.

Maundy Thursday walk-through communion April 1

College Ministries invites you to a walk-through communion from 9:45-10:30 a.m. Thursday, April 1, in the CFL front lobby. Participants will be directed to a communion station where they will receive the Sacrament with prayer and a blessing for Holy Week. The Sacrament will be provided in a sealed all-in-one goblet with one end containing gluten-free unleavened bread and the other end containing red wine. Our servers will be taking every precaution to serve participants in a safe manner.

Women, Faith, and Finance virtual event April 9

On Friday, April 9, Luther is hosting a virtual keynote by Dr. Christine Whelan of University of Wisconsin-Madison as part of the Women, Faith, and Finance Initiative. Her presentation is titled, "Consuming Happiness: Money, Relationships, Equality, and Meaning…in the Pandemic and Beyond." Women of all ages are invited to participate. Paideia Texts and Issues Lecture: 'Resilient Communities' April 13

Jon Jensen will present "Resilient Communities in a Time of Change" at 7 p.m. Tuesday, April 13, via Zoom, as the last lecture of the 2020-21 Paideia Texts and Issues series "Building Community in a Changing Society." Jensen, with Luther seniors Piper Wood, Carina Hansen, and Jonathan Rivera, will discuss how communities can increase resilience and prepare for social and environmental changes in the twenty-first century.

Position openings

Administrative Assistant in the Nursing Department (1.0 FTE): Position coordinates and manages the ongoing support staff activities of the Decorah office, meeting the needs of the professional faculty and students. Responsibilities will include preparing and processing contractual agreements with clinical agencies, maintaining student health and academic files, processing NCLEX applications, as well as general office duties. College or business school degree and a high level of computer skills required.

Admissions Counselor or Assistant Director of Admissions (1.0 FTE): Primary responsibilities will include coordinating the recruitment of students from a specific recruitment territory, conducting frequent fall and spring overnight recruitment travel, presenting admissions and financial aid sessions on and off campus, serving as a liaison to the Financial Aid Office, assist with financial aid training and updates for admission staff, and assisting with other admissions-related activities/events as assigned. Extensive travel is required, and candidates must be able to work evenings and weekends when appropriate. A bachelor's degree is required, and applicants must have a valid driver's license.

Custodial Staff Member (0.75 FTE, 2nd shift): Custodial staff will maintain building appearance and cleanliness in all areas, including lobbies, entrances, classrooms, offices, hallways, kitchens, conference rooms, staircases, study lounges, restrooms, and shower rooms. Hours will typically be 4 p.m.–10:30 p.m., Monday–Friday. High School Diploma and/or equivalent preferred but not required. Must be able to read sufficiently to follow instructions.

Process Improvement Coordinator: Luther College is seeking internal candidates who will partner with departments across campus to examine and improve processes and workflows. Candidates should have experience conducting process improvement initiatives, expertise in process improvement methodologies, and a commitment to the college's mission and values. The Process Improvement Coordinator position will be a two-year term appointment with no guarantee of future employment. The deadline for applications Friday, April 9. 

Project Manager (1.0 FTE): Position to be responsible for the recruitment, development, supervision, and evaluation of facilities staff; coordination of internal resources and contractors/vendors for execution of projects; and track project performance to analyze the successful completion within timeline and budget goals. Associates degree preferred, with a minimum of 6-years' experience. Equivalent experience and education will be considered. High level of computer skills including Microsoft Office, web-based software, and database usage required. Analytical and reasoning skills for evaluation of processes, ability to lift up to 50 pounds, and a valid driver's license are also required.

ARTICLES, CREATIONS, HONORS

Nicholas Shaneyfelt was featured on saxophonist Jonathon Hulting-Cohen's new album, "Second Flight," released by Innova Records on March 26. The duo performed Annika Socolofsky's "Rise" for saxophone and bowed piano, which uses multiphonics, overtones, bow hair, and an e-bow to evoke the sounds and sympathetic vibrations of a hardanger fiddle. "Rise" premiered at Luther College in February 2018, ahead of a recording at Princeton University in October 2018.

Aaron Steffens was featured on NASFAA's MVP series, highlighting standout professionals in the field of financial aid.

Loren Toussaint and a team of students, now alumni, collaborated to develop a scale to measure hate. The study "Hateful Emotional Responses Scale (HatERS): Development and Initial Evaluation" was published in December of 2020 in the Journal of Hate Studies at Gonzaga University, Washington.

In her post, Writing, Reading, and De-isolation, Rachel Faldet talks about her work on the Decorah Community Writing Project, how it gives voice to universal struggles and happiness during Covid-19, and why it serves as an excellent resource for her courses.

In her post, Pandemic Reflections of a Chemist, Professor, and Mom (All in One), Olga Michels reflects on a year of discussions she's had with her students, friends, and family about the pandemic, knowledge being power, and science needing collaboration to "win."
