Endowed faculty development awards

The Dean's Office, along with the Faculty Development Committee, is pleased to announce the following endowed faculty development awards for 2021-22: Doris and Ragnvald Ylvisaker Endowment for Faculty Growth awards to Joe Breitenstein, Igor Kalnin, Beth Lynch, Susan Schmidt, and Orcun Selcuk; Ruth Caldwell Endowed Faculty Fellowship award to Nancy Gates Madsen; and H. Being Community updates

J&J vaccine clinic in Decorah
Winneshiek County Public Health is holding walk-in clinics for the Johnson & Johnson COVID vaccine this week. This vaccine requires only one dose. The CDC and FDA lifted the recommended pause on the use of this vaccine on Friday evening, after a thorough safety review. Luther encourages all students, faculty, and staff to participate. We do not yet have word on whether there can be another on-campus vaccine clinic. Seniors who receive the J&J vaccine or the second dose of Pfizer or Moderna by the end of this week will be able to participate in commencement without needing a COVID test. For more information read the WCPH announcement.

Fiscal year end approaching

The end of the fiscal year is approaching. Remember that all supplies, materials, etc., must be received by Monday, May 31, to be expensed to a fiscal year 2020-21 budget. Outstanding travel expense reports, original invoices, supporting purchase orders and purchase permits or account adjustments should be sent to the Office for Financial Services by Friday, June 11, to be included in FY 2020-21 budget. No faxed copies. Items for deposit must be sent to the Office for Financial Services by Friday, June 4. Thanks for helping OFS close out the year in a timely manner.

Take and bake Mother's Day brunch

Bring Mother's Day brunch home to Mom this year. Luther Catering is offering chef prepared items to create your own mimosa or bloody mary bar, amazing take and bake food and dessert. Check out the full menu at tickets.luther.edu/online. Orders must be placed by noon Thursday, May 6. Orders can be picked up in front of Dahl Centennial Union on Saturday, May 8 from 8 a.m.-6 p.m.

Preus Library used magazines

We are spring cleaning some of the shelves in Preus Library. Do you have a need for used magazines or journals? Art project? Vision board? Stuffing boxes for moving? Stop into the main lobby of the library and take some old magazines that have been pulled from the shelves. Any issues not taken will be recycled after Friday, May 7. Want to be a Certified Mental Health First Aider? 

Limited openings available for employees to participate in Adult Mental Health First Aid 8:30 a.m.-5 p.m. Friday, May 14, (30 min lunch on your own) in Olin 102, masks required and physically distanced. MHFA teaches how to help someone developing a mental health problem or experiencing a mental health crisis. Training is free and you receive a three year certification. Register here. Paideia all-college summer reading books still available

Copies of the 2021 summer read, "The Vanishing Half," are available to faculty and staff without cost at the Luther Book Shop, sponsored by the Paideia Program. This page-turner of a novel by Brit Bennett puts systemic racism under a sharp lens through the story of a Black mother and twin daughters, one of whom decides to pass as white. It was nominated for the National Book Award and named by The New York Times as one of the top 10 books of 2020. Pick up yours today!

Luther work study supervisors

Most compost collection ends May 9

Compost collection will close for the summer on May 9 in most academic and residence halls. Compost collection will remain open in the Union and in Miller Hall.

Cafeteria to Community Program provides food to those in need

Luther College is working to limit food waste and feed those in need through the return of the Cafeteria to Community Program. The program, which was on hiatus from March 15 through Dec. 1, is back up and running. Through the program, student coordinators work with dining services staff to package food that is labeled and delivered to three local food pantries. The program allows individuals and families to obtain healthy and nutritious meals at little to no cost.

Paideia research symposium online viewing

The Paideia 112 Research Symposium will be available to view online (asynchronously) from Friday, April 30 at 12 p.m. through Sunday, May 9. Go to the "Paideia Online Research Symposium"n KATIE to see outstanding student presentations on themes ranging from "The Creative Mind" to "Empowerment and Disempowerment" to "Magic, Medicine, and Healing."

CPB now accepting funding requests

The Campus Programming Board (formerly Lecture and Fine Arts) is accepting proposals between April 16–April 30 for the 2021-22 academic year. Funding is awarded for events in music, theatre and dance, literary events, visual arts, and speakers in other areas. Applications received between April 30–Sept 30 will be considered in a second round. Learn more or submit your proposal on the Campus Programming website. Questions? Luther website server upgrade April 27

The Marketing and Communications Office and ITS have a planned website upgrade scheduled for April 27. We request that all Reason users refrain from making updates from 6 a.m.–2 p.m. April 27, as those changes could be lost during the server transfer. Sign up for CSA reimbursement program by May 1

May 1 is the deadline to sign-up for Luther's CSA reimbursement program. The application form is on the Center for Sustainable Communities website. The program reimburses current Luther College faculty and staff 50% (maximum $100) of the cost of a CSA subscription. This is a very popular program, but a lot of people haven't tried it. Congratulations to Chauncy and Carson Eggland on the birth of their second son. Walker Lee was born April 21 and everyone is doing great!

Position openings

Admissions Events Coordinator (1.0 FTE): The admissions events coordinator assists the director of admissions operations in designing, implementing, and evaluating in-person and virtual admissions recruitment events throughout the academic year and summer. Bachelor's degree and at least one year experience in a related field required. Position is available to internal applicants only.

Development Officer (1.0 FTE): Position to serve as an ambassador of the college with responsibility to build and develop long-term, donor-centric relationships built on a firm understanding of the donor's interest, passions, and values. The primary objective of the officer is to advance the mission of the college by planning and implementing a program to identify, cultivate, solicit, and steward prospective donors with major and planned gift potential in support of Luther's fundraising initiatives and institutional priorities. Bachelor's degree and minimum of three years in development work, major gifts or related area required. This position requires traveling on a regular basis as well as evening and weekend hours for special events and travel. 

Sustainability Fellow (1.0 FTE, 10 month): This is a ten-month, full-time, 40 hour/week, position in the Center for Sustainable Communities, August 1, 2021–May 31, 2022. The Sustainability Fellow works with faculty, staff, students, and community partners to fulfill the center's mission to "promote sustainability and be a catalyst for change" as well as to educate the Luther community about the college's sustainability goals and related initiatives. Minimum qualifications: bachelor's degree; excellent oral and written communication skills; ability to work collaboratively with a broad range of people as well as to work independently. Experience with marketing/communications and/or web content development desirable. Experience and or familiarity with the Luther College campus is desirable, but not required.

ARTICLES, CREATIONS, HONORS

Dominique Alisa Stringer '22 presented a poster entitled, "The Experience of Hmong American Refugees Navigating the Roles of Women" on April 12, 2021 at the online National Conference on Undergraduate Research (NCUR). This research reports her analysis of materials from her 2019 summer student-faculty research collaboration with Destiny Crider in the anthropology program.

Gereon Kopf contributed a review of Steven M. Emmanuel's Buddhist Philosophy: A Comparative Approach (Wiley Blackwell) to the Eastern Buddhist.

Gereon Kopf presented "Does AI have buddha-nature? How a philosophy based on Dōgen and Nishida can provide an impulse for a new philosophy of mind?" at the annual meeting of the International Society of Japanese Philosophy in Kyoto (March 13-15, 2021) and "Kannō dōkō and kō'ō in Japanese philosophy: A Blueprint for a Second Person Ontology" at the International conference on "Feeling and Emotion in Japanese Philosophy" in Sendai (April 14-15, 2021).

Ideas and Creations

In his post, Embracing the Spirit of Luther's Climate Justice Week, Logan Olson '22, chair of Luther's Environmental Concerns Organization, shares how even during these challenging times, all of us can take on the spirit of "unless" when facing the issues of climate and social justice.

In his post, Nurturing Our Pollinators and Natural Spaces: The Sustainability Scholars’ Pollinator Project, Justin Stewart '23 shares how a group of students and faculty work together to improve Luther's relationship with the environment and learn more about leadership in sustainability.

EDITORIAL COMMENT

And finally...

On April 27, 4977 B.C., the universe was created, according to German mathematician and astronomer Johannes Kepler. Born December 27, 1571, in Weil der Stadt, Germany, Kepler is considered a founder of modern science and is best known for his theories explaining the motion of planets. 20th century scientists developed the Big Bang theory, which showed that Kepler's calculations were off by about 13.7 billion years, but if you're looking for a reason to celebrate this Tuesday, how about Happy Birthday Universe!
