ANNOUNCEMENTS

Move-out day parking restrictions

To help facilitate closing of the residence halls we will be restricting parking on High Street from Koren to Center Street starting 8 p.m. Tuesday, May 11, until 9 p.m. Thursday, May 13. The faculty/staff parking along this section will be converted to a loading zone only during this time period to allow better access to those moving out of Brandt. In addition, the small lot south of Ylvisaker and east of the CFL will also be restricted to those vehicles being actively loaded for moving out of the residence hall during this same time period. We greatly appreciate your cooperation in this matter.

Faculty and staff members invited to participate in Commencement

On May 6, faculty and staff members received an email from Kristen Underwood that included information about Commencement on Sunday, May 16. The in-person ceremony in the CFL is for graduating seniors and a small stage party only. It will be live-streamed on the Luther website.

Faculty and staff members are encouraged to participate in the “gauntlet,” a joyful corridor leading graduates from the steps of the CFL to the intersection of walkways by Bentdahl Commons. Please be in place by noon. From Bentdahl Commons, graduates will split off toward the banners marking meeting spots around the central campus. You may join them after the last of the graduates has passed through. This year’s gauntlet should function as a chute rather than a receiving line. Cheer and wave, but say “I’ll meet you by our banner!” if students wish to stop and talk. (A map of meeting spot locations can be found at luther.edu/commencement.) Masks are required and name tags are helpful. Academic regalia is strongly encouraged. 

The college has carefully assigned parking lots for guests. Faculty and staff members are to park in the Regents Center or Decorah Pool parking lot.

Being Community updates

“Vaccine passport” ban bill
The Iowa Senate approved a bill making it illegal for businesses or governmental entities to require proof of vaccination for COVID-19 from patrons or visitors. Only health care facilities were exempted. The bill does not prohibit other types of COVID screening protocols. Governor Kim Reynolds is expected to sign this bill, as she already expressed support of a “vaccine passport” ban. This law will affect considerations about what private colleges in Iowa, like Luther, can mandate regarding COVID vaccination.

Reminder for seniors attending Commencement
Seniors attending Commencement must be cleared by the Student Health Service and Student Life Office by 5 p.m. on Friday, May 14. Read details about fulfilling this requirement on the Commencement website.

Fiscal year end approaching    

Outstanding travel expense reports, original invoices, supporting purchase orders, and purchase permits or account adjustments should be sent to the Office for Financial Services by Friday, June 11, to be included in FY 2020-21 budget. No faxed copies. Items for deposit must be sent to the Office for Financial Services by Friday, June 4. Thanks for helping OFS close out the year in a timely manner.

Work study supervisor meeting

Mark your calendars to hear more about exciting happenings within the Luther work study program, how you can prepare for the fall work study, and the opportunities that are being developed for you and your students. 2022 community-wide summer read

The Paideia Program invites suggestions for the community-wide summer read for 2022. Books can be in any genre, no longer than 300 pages, and should relate to our enduring question, “In a divided society, how do we live in community?” Email your suggestions to <paideia> and watch for an invitation to a summer reading group to discuss the possibilities.

Cashier's Window summer hours

Beginning Friday, May 21, the Financial Services Cashier Window will close at 2 p.m. every Friday. The final Friday for our summer hours will be Friday, Aug. 13.

Nordic Choir releases a new album for streaming

This summer, you can take the beautiful sounds of the Luther College Nordic Choir with you wherever you go. Their newest album, "Coming Home to the Light" is now available for streaming on Spotify, Apple Music, and Amazon Music. This album features some of Nordic Choir's performances from the past 4 years, under the direction of Andrew Last.

Can Mountain thanks

The Luther College Chapter of Habitat for Humanity extends its gratitude to the community for donating redeemable cans and bottles during the Can Mountain event on April 8-11, 2021. All of the proceeds, totaling $1600, go directly to Winneshiek County Habitat for Humanity. LCHFH would also like to thank Main Street Redemption Center, Calmar Redemption Center, student volunteers, and EXO fraternity for assisting in the event. Tabs were also removed from aluminum cans and donated to Ronald McDonald House charities.

Registration is now open for summer athletic camps

Registration is now open for summer athletic camps at Luther. Summer camps for 2021 will be offered in a day camp format and will include offerings for distance running, football, soccer, tennis, and wrestling in the months of June and July. Registration is now open for summer Discovery Camps at Luther. Four unique Discovery Camps will be offered during the month of June to all students interested in learning more about the beauty and diversity of the natural world. The courses are designed to engage participants in hands-on, discovery-oriented learning about their environment. There are Discovery Camps available for those pre-K through 8th grade. Call for proposals: Text and Issues Lecture Series

The Paideia Steering Committee invites proposals for the 2021-22 Text and Issues Lecture Series on the theme "Decolonizing Paideia? Revising the Products and Processes of Education." How might our disciplines, our curriculum, and our pedagogies (education, or in the Greek sense, paideia) be considered colonial, and in what ways can and should they change? View the Text and Issues Proposal Form to see the full description and submit a proposal. Proposals are due Friday, May 15.

VIA Mentoring Program accepting applications and nominations for 2021-22

Vocation-Inspired Alumni Mentoring (or VIA Mentoring) is a program that connects Luther students and alumni one-on-one in conversations about ways to learn actively, live purposefully, and lead courageously at Luther College and beyond. Do you know a student who could benefit from connecting with an an alumni mentor? Do you know a student who could flourish with a bit more opportunity for reflection and connection? Commencement weekend hours
The Book Shop will be open Saturday, May 15, from 10 a.m.-5 p.m. and Sunday, May 16, from 9:30 a.m.-2:30 p.m.

The Book Shop has a large selection of graduation cards and gifts. Stop by and check out all the great choices for your favorite Grad!

Summer hours
Beginning Monday, May 17, the Book Shop will be open Monday-Thursday 8:15 a.m.-4:45 p.m. and Fridays from 8:15 a.m.-2:15 p.m. The store will be closed May 24-May 28 for inventory and will reopen on June 1.

Retirement

Kevin Kraus, who has worked at Luther for more than 31 years has announced his retirement effective June 30, 2021. We congratulate Kevin and thank him for his dedicated service to the College.

Position openings

Full-time Utility/Carpenter (1.0 FTE): Position involves the completion of a variety of projects on campus for Facilities Services in support of students, faculty, and staff. These range from work orders submitted through our online work order system, to completing office remodels, ceiling installations, drywall installation and repair, and helping in other Facilities Services areas. This position also serves as our back-up locksmith so we have redundancy in that important area. High school diploma is required. Also required are computer skills to access the college’s web-based work order system and a valid driver’s license. Some formal training and at least two years’ experience in the carpentry field is preferred.

Admissions Events Coordinator (1.0 FTE): The admissions events coordinator assists the director of admissions operations in designing, implementing, and evaluating in-person and virtual admissions recruitment events throughout the academic year and summer. Bachelor's degree and at least one year experience in a related field required. Position is available to internal applicants only.

Director of Stewardship and Special Events: The Luther Development Office is seeking internal candidates for a full-time Director of Stewardship and Special Events. A bachelor's degree is required, along with strong oral and written communication skills and proven proficiency in proofing/editing. Candidates should have three years' experience in special event management/planning, communications, or a related field. Prior work in customer relations and/or volunteer management is important.

Nursing Lab and Simulation Assistant/Staff Instructor (0.75 FTE: full time September–May): Under the direction of the Nursing Department, the assistant will support teaching of clinical judgement across the curriculum utilizing evidence-based practice. We seek a nurse who is well versed in the fundamentals of the discipline and is interested in inclusive and innovative pedagogy, including simulation. Bachelor's degree in nursing and three years of recent medical-surgical and/or acute care experience is required. Also required is eligibility for RN licensure in Minnesota and Iowa. Experience teaching in a baccalaureate program is preferred. Primary responsibilities will be on the main Luther College campus, but may require some travel to Rochester, Minn.

Stewardship and Events Coordinator (1.0 FTE): Position in the Development Office to provide administrative and project management support for programming and events related to donor stewardship, fundraising campaigns, and other aspects of development. Responsibilities will include: manage the Legacy Trust endowed scholarship stewardship programming; assist with donor stewardship communication to members of giving societies, Norse Athletic Association programming, and campaign appeals. Associates degree or equivalent experience and two years related professional work experience required.

Andy Hageman gave a talk called "Reyduce, Reyuse, Recycle: The Ecopolitics of Scavenge in Star Wars" at the Realizing Resistance II Conference on May 5.

Andy Hageman published a scholarly book review of Dan Golding's "Star Wars After Lucas" in the SF journal Extrapolation.

Gereon Kopf contributed essays on "Art in Japanese Buddhism," "The Zen Masters of the Rinzai Tradition," "Does AI have Buddha-nature," and "Do I need a teacher to practice meditation," to Buddhistdoor Global.

Orçun Selçuk has a forthcoming chapter "Turkish Airlines as a Source of Turkey's Soft Power in Africa" as part of an edited volume "Turkey in Africa A New Emerging Power?." 

Four students have each received a $1,000 Karen Julesberg Scholarship for the 2021-22 academic year. The recipients are Sandy Antunez-Blas '23, Jadyn Gasper '23, Jill Richards '22 and Mara Wood '22. The Karen Julesberg Scholarship benefits Luther College students involved in the TRIO Achievement Program.  Karen Julesberg '60 of Madison, Wisconsin, has sponsored the scholarship since 2012.
