Board of Regents grant emeritus status and faculty promotion

At the May 14 meeting, the Board of Regents granted emeritus status to Nancy Barry (English), Anne Bulliung (classics), Rachel Faldet (English), Laurie Iudin-Nelson (modern languages, literatures and linguistics), Kevin Kraus (biology), James Martin-Schramm (religion), Deborah Norland (education), Kimberly Powell (communication studies), Lori Stanley (anthropology), and Virginia Strauss (music). Also announced at the May meeting was the promotion of David Mitchell to assistant professor. Congratulations to all!

Ashley Benson named dean of student engagement

President Ward has announced the appointment of Ashley C. Benson to the newly created dean of student engagement position at Luther. Benson comes to Luther from the College of Wooster in Ohio where she has worked as the associate dean of students since 2017. Prior to that appointment, she was the director of TRIO Student Support Services at North Central State College in Mansfield, Ohio, for nearly seven years. At Luther, Benson will oversee seven student-centric units including campus recreational sports, Counseling Service, the Nena Amundson Lifetime Wellness Program, Residence Life, student activities, Health Service and the Student Life Office. Reporting to newly appointed provost, Lynda A. Szymanski, Benson will join the Luther community on July 1.

The Book Shop will be closed May 24–28 for inventory. Please consider future purchases and make before this time.

Tax exempt at Dollar Tree

When purchasing at the Dollar Tree, if you do not want to fill out the tax exempt form at check out, you can have the sales associate scan the college's exempt barcode. The barcode form is on the Financial Services website and is called "Dollar Tree Tax Exempt Barcode."

Launch for Luther work-study supervisors

After two years of work by so many at Luther, the Luther Works invigorated student work program is officially rolling out. Come to the launch and hear more about Luther Works, your influential role in the program, how you can prepare for the fall work study, and opportunities that are being developed for you and your work-study students. We will gather via Zoom at 8:30 a.m. Thursday, May 20, and Thursday, June 3. Pick whichever date works best for you. Not able to attend either? The launch will be recorded for you to watch later. Keep an eye on your email for more details.

View our latest leisure reading books online, including new releases, bestsellers, and more. The leisure reading shelf on the main floor of the library is also now open for casual browsing. Can't find the book you're looking for? Let us know by emailing <reading>, and we'll work some library magic to locate a copy for you.

Equity and Inclusion in Study Away workshop

The Center for Global Learning is sponsoring a virtual Equity and Inclusion in Study Away workshop 9 a.m.–noon Tuesday, May 25, and Wednesday, May 26. All faculty and staff members are invited. Visit the CELT website for more details and to register.

2022 community-wide summer read

The Paideia Program invites suggestions for the community-wide summer read for 2022. Books can be in any genre, no longer than 300 pages, and should relate to our enduring question, "In a divided society, how do we live in community?" Email your suggestions to <paideia> and watch for an invitation to a summer reading group to discuss the possibilities.

Cashier's Window summer hours

Beginning Friday, May 21, the Financial Services Cashier Window will close at 2 p.m. every Friday. The final Friday for our summer hours will be Friday, Aug. 13.

Nordic Choir releases a new album for streaming

This summer, you can take the beautiful sounds of the Luther College Nordic Choir with you wherever you go. Their newest album, "Coming Home to the Light" is now available for streaming on Spotify, Apple Music, and Amazon Music. This album features some of Nordic Choir's performances from the past 4 years, under the direction of Andrew Last.

Can Mountain thanks

The Luther College Chapter of Habitat for Humanity extends its gratitude to the community for donating redeemable cans and bottles during the Can Mountain event on April 8-11, 2021. All of the proceeds, totaling $1600, go directly to Winneshiek County Habitat for Humanity. LCHFH would also like to thank Main Street Redemption Center, Calmar Redemption Center, student volunteers, and EXO fraternity for assisting in the event. Tabs were also removed from aluminum cans and donated to Ronald McDonald House charities.

Registration is now open for summer athletic camps

Registration is now open for summer athletic camps at Luther. Summer camps for 2021 will be offered in a day camp format and will include offerings for distance running, football, soccer, tennis, and wrestling in the months of June and July. Athletic camps are available for campers entering kindergarten through 12th grade. To learn more about Luther's summer athletic camp offerings or to register visit www.luther.edu/sports/camps.

Registration is now open for summer Discovery Camps at Luther. Four unique Discovery Camps will be offered during the month of June to all students interested in learning more about the beauty and diversity of the natural world. The courses are designed to engage participants in hands-on, discovery-oriented learning about their environment. There are Discovery Camps available for those pre-K through 8th grade. Autographed Copies of Chris Norton's books
The Book Shop has signed copies of The Power of Faith and The Seven Longest Yards by Luther's 2021 Commencement speaker, Chris Norton. A 2015 alum, Norton is also a motivational speaker and founder of the SCI CAN Foundation.

Summer hours
Beginning Monday, May 17, the Book Shop will be open Monday-Thursday 8:15 a.m.-4:45 p.m. and Fridays from 8:15 a.m.-2:15 p.m. The store will be closed May 24-May 28 for inventory and will reopen on June 1.

Position openings

Accounting Clerk-Cash Transactions (1.0 FTE): Position responsible for generating cash disbursements and banking transactions on a daily basis and reconciling multiple bank accounts. Position will also assist with the college's commercial card program and managing the college's unclaimed property program. Responsibilities will include e-commerce paypal-campsite stripe platforms and employee registry. Associate's degree and ability to work with minimal supervision is required. Two years' banking related experience and understanding of the general ledger system is desired.

Towers Area Coordinator, Miller/Dieseth Halls (10 month per year, .83 FTE, live-in position): This position is responsible for coordinating the student learning and personal development programs in a coeducational residence hall housing approximately 730 students. Master's degree in college student personnel, counseling, or higher education preferred; bachelor's degree required.

Utility/Carpenter (1.0 FTE): Position involves the completion of a variety of projects on campus for Facilities Services in support of students, faculty, and staff. These range from work orders submitted through our online work order system, to completing office remodels, ceiling installations, drywall installation and repair, and helping in other Facilities Services areas. This position also serves as our back-up locksmith so we have redundancy in that important area. High school diploma is required. Also required are computer skills to access the college’s web-based work order system and a valid driver’s license. Some formal training and at least two years’ experience in the carpentry field is preferred.

ARTICLES, CREATIONS, HONORS

Gereon Kopf contributed the essay "Atheism is nothing but an expression of Buddha-nature" to the journal "Sophia" for a special issue titled "Living without God: Multicultural Spectrums of Atheism" (Springer, 2021).

Madeline Lomprey '21 of Waunakee, Wisconsin, received the college's Elizabeth A. and Paul G. Jenson Medal for the class of 2021. The Jenson Medal is presented each year to an outstanding senior, selected by the graduating class, who best demonstrates the ideals of the college through service to students and the college community. Lomprey graduated with a degree in international studies with a peace and dialogue concentration.

Kate Narveson has published three articles this year: "Ethos, Habit, and Religious Disposition," in "Shakespeare and Virtue: A Handbook," ed. Julia R. Lupton and Donovan Sherman, Cambridge University Press (forthcoming). "Imagining prayer in Donne's Devotions and Herbert's poems of complaint," in "Enthralled and Cross-biased: Essays on the Devotional Poetry and Prose of John Donne and George Herbert," ed. Russell Hillier and Robert Reeder, Univ. of Delaware Press (2021). "Grace Mildmay," "Encyclopaedia of Early Modern Women's Writing in English," edited by Rosalind Smith and Patricia Pender, Palgrave (January, 2020).

David Njus and two students presented research at the 2021 Midwestern Psychological Association conference. Amelia Hornseth '21 presented "Attachment to God and Self-Control," and Gretchen Blain '21 presented "Self-regulation, Self-Regulatory Mode, and God Attachment."

Ideas and Creations

In the post, My Experience with the Center for Sustainable Communities, Kim Chham '21 reflects on her role as a sustainability educator, how it provided meaningful work by connecting her with others in a common mission, and why it gives her hope for the future.

In the post, Taking a Proactive Approach to Promote a Safer Campus Culture, Kasey Nikkel shares how Luther has partnered with Alteristic, a non-profit organization that trains campus community members to create a culture that is intolerant of violence.
